24.01.2022 Friends! If you're in need of well-written words, now's the time to get in touch. I've got a little bit of availability this week and next. Hit me up!
23.01.2022 Any article on grammar that references Dennis Denuto gets a big thumbs up from me. Plus: every point these guys make is spot on!
21.01.2022 For those of you who may be under the illusion that working from home is a glamorous business, I offer you this: me, dressed as Batman, defending myself from a small doctor child. Yet somehow it works. Go figure. {Lots of exciting writing projects coming up this week. Stay tuned!}
21.01.2022 The snark mark! Yes!
19.01.2022 Just in case anyone was wondering what to get me for my birthday ...
16.01.2022 Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a peculiar breed of humans called professional writers. They were called professional not for their tendency to wear pyjamas while they worked, nor for the fact that they dropped biscuit crumbs on their keyboards, but for the fact that they took great pride in their writing, and were paid handsomely for their words. I mean, not that well, but well enough; enough to call writing a proper job, anyway. There was even an...d steady yourselves here, because this might come as a shock another breed of humans called sub-editors. These mythical, long-forgotten creatures laboured tirelessly, day and night, to ensure the writers’ sentences were free from glaring errors and hanging participles, so that the words would be crisp, clear and easy to read. Bill Bryson called sub-editors the guardians of the English language, and so they were, once. But then, over the years, big bad creatures called publishing moguls and marketing graduates decided writers and sub-editors were no longer in need of such fripperies as cold, hard cash, and started paying them less and less, until the day when the starved writers and sub-editors fell to their knees, and were forced to beg the publishing moguls and marketing graduates if they could write and edit for free, simply for exposure. The publishing moguls and the marketing graduates laughed their terrible, merciless laugh and gnashed their terrible, merciless teeth and said no! You shall pay us, as we provide an amazing platform to see your work published! Exposure is worth far more than a Happy Meal and a pint of milk! The poor writers staggered home hungrily, only to announce to their rickets-ridden children that alas! mummy did the wrong fucking degree at university, and should’ve become a pharmacist like nanny suggested in the first place. The end. #paythewriters
14.01.2022 I never leave home without my red pen/can of spray paint.
06.01.2022 I've been helping the wonderful Heartfelt Homes charity with a press release this week. I didn't count on it reducing me to tears: "Heartfelt Homes recently helped a beautiful family who live more than 340km from The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Now five months old, their baby was tragically diagnosed with the most aggressive childhood cancer at just two months old. Their baby is in palliative care, Mum and Dad are by his side day and night, breathing in every last cuddl...e they can get. This has been their nightmare for three months. The family also have a three-year-old who needs them but who can't stay in the hospital. Heartfelt Homes is accommodating Grandma opposite the hospital she brings their daughter in for two or three days each week, so they can spend family time together." Heartfelt Homes does good things. It does great things. Please, support them if you can. www.heartfelthomes.com.au
03.01.2022 When you start with a client and end up with a friend, you know you've done something right. I've been working with the wonderful Cema Santos - My Mind Master for a little while now, and the results - for both of us - have been amazing. Cema's now got a beautifully written website, and I've got a beautifully clear mind. I can't recommend her services highly enough - if you need to clear your head and focus your energies, she's the woman for you.
02.01.2022 The best part about this gig? Helping tell the stories of amazing Aussie businesses. This week I've been working with Cork Leaf, a Sydney-based business making small, meaningful changes to create a positive impact over time for future generations. Their eco-friendly cork yoga mats are the bomb. Loved working with this inspiring little company!
02.01.2022 Businesses of Australia, no, bugger it, the world. Businesses of the world! Are you under the impression that you don't need to employ a professional writer for your websites and your blogs and your newsletters and your social media? I've got some news for you: you're getting it all wrong. Ridiculously and laughably wrong. Good businesses need good writers. Yeah, yeah, I know - why pay someone to do something that you can do perfectly well yourself? Well, guess what? You ca...n't do it. You might be very good at [insert the nature of your business here], but the writing? You need to leave that to the professionals. When my pipes are blocked, I call a plumber. When I need an extra socket, I call an electrician. When I need a haircut, I visit a hairdresser. See where this is going? There are some things that need to be left to the trained professonials; the people who have trained and qualified and worked in the industry for longer than they care to remember. I'm not talking about Fiverr here. Nor am I talking about those young punk kids who think they're copywriters because they know their way around Facebook, or Myspace, or whatever it is the young people are into these days. I'm a writer and an editor; have been for close to 20 years. It's not much, but it's all I've got. When I see badly written websites, or social media updates riddled with typos, it hurts my pedantic heart. As far as I can see, if your business' words are crappy, then your business looks crappy. I will leave you with one suggestion: when you need words written or edited, you should employ a professional writer and editor. It's a small investment that offers big returns, and will make me happy.
01.01.2022 'If you’re expected to deliver a list of specific items a post, a shoutout, a record of reach and engagement then you are a professional and professionals get paid. If there are ramifications for you missing a deadline then you are a professional. If there is an expectation for you to deliver something that goes viral then you are a professional. If the client is putting expectations on you, then you should be paid expectations are for employees.' Great article on whether bloggers should get paid for writing for businesses, or should do it for the 'exposure' and the sheer love of helping other people make money.
01.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE A HOME? DOES YOUR HOME HAVE A FLOOR? Yes and yes? Then read this (I wrote it):
