24.01.2022 PTSC | Fun at the Clinic The children of potential (yes our own little minions) had some fun one weekend trying out new ninja warrior courses, working on an attempt at synchronised diving (won't be entering the team for the olympics yet ) and a challenge to help empty as much foam as possible out of the foam pit. There was laughter all around, great heavy work jobs, building lots of strength and fitness - and a nice fluffy foam pit as a result.... At PTSC, we enjoy a laugh - because the best learning and therapeutic support occurs through play and having fun Phone: (08) 9754 3061 Email: [email protected]

22.01.2022 PTSC | Children & Fitness Kids need to move!! It is so important for their physical health (strength, muscles, joints, ligaments, heart, lungs) as well as mental well-being and social interaction. Children don't need to "exercise" they need to MOVE!! ... Get them moving and playing and they will get so many benefits for their bodies and minds. Our physiotherapy goals for so many of our kids this year was to get outside and move - 30 to 60 minutes at least 5 days a week. Ideas: Play a game of bat and ball Go on a treasure hunt Explore the rocks at the beach for crabs and marine life Find a hiking trail and go for a walk in nature Go to a playground with friends Ride a bike or scooter Play games with their friends Kids need to move more and sit less - its vital for their well-being and growth! 16.01.2022 PTSC | Behaviours Certain behaviours may be due to a variety of factors - but it is always important to remember that a child's behaviour could be their way of communicating that something else is going on. This is such a great visual reminder that it is always important to be holistic when dealing with behaviours and to remember that there could be a lot more going on "below the surface" than we are aware of.... Often the common factor we have noticed when dealing with maladaptive behaviours in the classroom, is that the child doesn't understand the material and is worried about how others will see them - or they are fearful of trying for fear of failure. 16.01.2022 PTSC | Balance Bikes Balance Bikes are brilliant and I highly recommend them. Kids develop so many skills for balance, co-ordination, steering; as well as safety, and motor planning for going where they want to go before having to navigate the challenge of pedals. I have watched many kids go straight from a balance bike to pedal bike and only need 2-3 goes to get the hang of the pedal motion and then the trainer wheels are off. ... Balance bikes are available at Kmart and you can even put training wheels on them if a child needs a bit of extra balance support. It doesn't need to be an expensive venture : https://www.kmart.com.au//28cm-whirlwind-balance-b/2366304 For more information regarding the benefits of balance bikes, check out the link below : : https://cyclemetots.com/pages/the-benefits-of-balance-bikes Credit: CYCLEme TOTS ~ Ellen (Physiotherapist)

15.01.2022 PTSC | Circle of Control ~ Brilliant example of a circle of control visual ~ In an often confusing and complicated society - children can often feel a lack of control within their lives, of which can impact on their mental health, behaviours, functional independence, learning and development, and performance within their varying occupations and environments.... We often use this simple concept within therapy to break down and simplify the factors that children can and can't control; to assist with coping strategies, problem solving, reflecting, emotional regulation (i.e.: relieving worries and anxieties) and various other concerns or factors. An awesome way to do it, is to get children to design their own circles and identify their own individual factors they can and can't control.
