22.01.2022 More Dragon Boat history
22.01.2022 Numerous dragon boat races featuring our club in earlier years. Pretty poor quality video. Of note: 'paddles up'start which was the norm in the earlier days. Note the Powerblades social team "The Very Social Powerblades" . Social team members wore yellow tops. Note the navy licra outfits worn by the çlub 'sports team'. Check out the wooden paddles used throughout this period. . In one film, clubs are racing across the port river from dock one towards the Birkenhead tavern. ...These races or 'skins'were flat out sprints and held twice with $200 going to the winner. Powerblades won both of these events. Starting was by a canon mounted on sure near the Birkenhead pub. Also in this vieo is footage of the last Moomba festival races on the Yarra that Powerblades attended. We were sponsored by Cadbury promoting a new bar with a stimulant ingredient. Labelled "The cholcolate with horns", club members were supposed to wear viking helmets during the races. These got in the way of paddling and made us all look like horned morons so were abandoned by all but the sweep and the drummer. It was this event where we first saw what was referred to as the 'new stroke'. You can see in the race how the "dragongoat Restaurant"team (about 1:18 into this video with the laerge white round buoys) in green just sailed past us almost effortlessly. We brought this style back to SA and for the next few seasons were unbeatable. Look for Tim Monson, Neil Parker, Marcel, Greg and Andy Kelly. See more
21.01.2022 Thanks Dahlia. Well done Powerblades.
21.01.2022 Last regatta for 2020 held on Sunday Dec 13 - 500m racing with 18 paddlers, also 2km Mixed. Tough conditions, pretty warm, strong northerly winds. Didn't win any events today, but achieved 2nd and 3rd placing throughout. Great skills from sweeps Bill K, Lyn S and Larry. Tough job for those who set up the 500m start line.
21.01.2022 A bit of club history. Pre-club 2012 re-birth logos. Abandoned because of 'difficult' fonts, low interpretation and difficulty for printers and uniform makers.

18.01.2022 Here we are warming up for this morning's training session with 27 paddlers. Perfect conditions on the water, great work from everyone, especially sweeps Larry and Mark. Two boats, with friendly competition between them at every bridge, and in a 200m race to finish the session.
18.01.2022 Happy Duanwu! Even @redbull is getting in on the dragon boat festival spirit this year #redbullgivesyouwings #
18.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS. What a fabulous woman and club member.
17.01.2022 Terrific training this morning (a bit spoiled with the later starts). Weather was fantastic and the water calm, making for a perfect day to focus on technique. Wished you were there.
16.01.2022 Well done everybody for completing the 50M swim after a challenging training session!

11.01.2022 First regatta of season 20-21. Opening ceremony with Blessing of the Boats and Dotting the Dragon Eyes by Buddhist monks, blues skies, 32 PB paddlers participating in 10s x 200m and 10s x 2km races. Results for Powerblades: 1st in 3 events - Sen B Women, Sen A Open 200m and Premier Open 2km, 2nd in 7 events and 3rd in 2 events. A fantastic effort by everyone.
10.01.2022 Training session August 29 - beautiful weather, two boats, with trainee coach Janetta taking her first session with coach Jenny. A great workout.
10.01.2022 2016 (doesn't seem that long ago) that we were competing on Hong Kong Harbour, fighting the ocean swell, the humidity and ferocious competition. What a colourful, exciting event. Look out to see if you can spot our crew in this video
09.01.2022 Powerblades committee meeting tonight. Gearing up for another season. Looking forward to heading to Perth for next year's AusChamps. Who's in?

07.01.2022 2010...our last BIG BIG year before the club's near demise in 2013.. Only Marcel and Andy remain from that year's crew. I think that 2010 was Neil's year off because I can't see him here.. Must have been Andy's first year to step in as President (no one nominated for President after Tim Monson stepped down after 15 years at the helm). Some members moved to other clubs in the following years. Many retired. It was a time and I hope some remember that time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1xbRGoXA3g
07.01.2022 Have you ever seen a Sweep this good? What a right hand turn from Valley Dragonboat Clubs Dave to get back into the lagoon in swells that almost hit the bridge!

04.01.2022 Warming up for another great Saturday morning training session. Weather conditions were pretty good, despite dismal forecast. Two boats, about 32 paddlers. Well done to sweeps Lyn & Larry.
04.01.2022 BILL'S POINTS TO PONDER #3 By Bill Jay So, we keep stressing that positive angle of entry at the catch but why is 60 degrees ideal? Well, heres what happens fr...om the moment the blade enters the water until the blade is fully buried. As you drive the paddle forward and downward over that imaginary roller in the water, the blade initially enters the water at that 60 degree angle. Because of the resistance of the water, pressure builds on the face of the blade and results in positive forces that subsequent stroke actions utilize to move the boat forward. The total forces generated at the initial entry of 60 degrees are the sum of two vectors; a vertical vector of about 33% of the force generated that would act to push the boat up and a horizontal vector of 66% that would push the boat forward. As the blade carves into the water, the angle of entry rapidly goes from 60 to 90 degrees and the resulting vertical/horizontal force vectors go from a 33%/66% ratio to a 0%/100% ratio. In other words, because the blade is now vertical in the water, 100% of the resulting forces are acting to push the boat forward. That momentary upward vector acts very briefly to lift the boat and less boat in the water equals less water resistance. Now what goes up must come down which would have negative consequences but the rapid transition to a 100% forward horizontal force kicks in before the boat can sink and accelerates the boat forward. Because of the shape of the boat hull, the increase in speed causes the boat to begin planing counteracting gravitys desire to pull the boat down into the water. So why is 60 the ideal number? 90 degrees or a vertical entry does not load the paddle during the catch, there is no vertical vector to lift the boat and the horizontal force does not kick in until the paddle is accelerated through the water. Part of the stroke length is being used to build blade pressure. The boat is deeper in the water resulting in more resistance and therefore more difficult to accelerate and thus harder to make it plane. A more acute angle of entry would result in more vertical lift but as the saying goes too much of a good thing... Too much initial lift would not be balanced by the subsequent horizontal push. As a result, the boat would tend to bob up and down impeding its forward movement. 60 degrees is the perfect balance of a slight upward assist followed by a powerful forward push. In addition, the blade is being loaded from the moment it enters the water, the resulting catch is achieved in a more forward position resulting in a greater effective stroke length and more power.

02.01.2022 An international Dragon Boat festival held in Honk Kong, China. Adelaide's Powerblades Dragon Boat Racing Club competed in the 10s and combined with Adelaide's Subsonic crew as POWERSONICS in the 20s category. Very challenging conditions due to the heat/humidity and the rolling ocean swell. Clearly, local Asian crews had a possible advantage with lighter crews and weather acclimatisation. The swells post a constant risk for roll-overs or swamping. Our sweeps did very well to avoid either of those. Can you spot the Powerblades crew?
01.01.2022 Bernie and her partner Steve Shears are both ex-powerblades who moved on to different sports. Fantastic to see them doing well. Was a time when Bernie and sister Mary were cobntant lead strokes in our very successful mens and womens teams.
