05.01.2022 132 years ago, on November 9th 1888, Mayoress Elizabeth Piper used a tiny gold key to bathe Tamworth with electric street lighting. It was in this moment that Tamworth became the first municipality in the southern hemisphere to light its streets with electricity. The original power station that provided the electricity for these lights once stood where the Powerhouse Hotel stands today. The obelisk at the forefront of the hotel represents a column of light and was erected in 1938 to commemorate 50 years of electric lighting in Tamworth. #powerhousetamworth
