06.01.2022 A follow on from today's message I outlined in Super Circuit this morning at Ezyfit Health Club I mentioned that if you are concerned about coming to the club and are choosing to stay away during this time - please continue to exercise, whether it be going for a walk or doing a workout at home. If you are on immunosuppression, please take extra care during this time. Now let me explain why I still encourage exercise. ... Practicing good hygiene is our first barrier of defense against infection. However, do not underestimate the the power of our own bodies and the physiological processes that occur during exercise. By continuing to exercise (doesn't have to be vigorous), you are maintaining your second line of defense - your immune system. Physiology 101: During infection, we employ the services of Neutrophils or Natural Killer cells - and they are responsible for dealing with foreign bacterial or viral cells respectively. They may circulate around doing their thing without us even knowing. Now the good bit. During exercise, natural killer cells count and function increase within the blood plasma an old study found that this increase occurred after 6mins of submaximal exercise at 55% VO2 (max effort). However, levels can increase significantly during only 25% effort. On top of this, exercise can make URTi's less symptomatic. How long does the increase in killer cells last for? It can range. Just the killer cells - can be within 2 hours. However, other subpopulations of the leucocyte and lymphocyte families can take up to 24hrs. Exercise, as proven with many other conditions, is one of the best probiotic for your body, and in a lot of cases, your best medicine. So, again, I still strongly encourage you all to keep as active as you can whether you are at the club or at home. If we stay on top of gym etiquette and wipe BEFORE and AFTER equipment use (as you should have been doing even before all this!), as well as knowing when to stay at home when we feel unwell, then EzyFit should not be a place to be feared. Take the extra few seconds to clean your equipment after classes, and if you're still booked for PT with me, we'll make sure we still wipe down and not get lazy with it - or you may get penalty burpees.
