24.01.2022 When one limb is injured, some individuals will report similar symptoms in the opposite limb. Your GP or therapist may describe this as an "overuse" or "due to compensating" from the other being injured. But what does the research say about this reasoning? According to the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Disease and Injury Causation, 2nd Edition...... for upper limb injuries "Whilst the hypothesis apparently seems plausible (perhaps intuitively obvious) to some, Health care professionals cannot credibly rely on superficial considerations of plausibility or intuition. A solid basis in science is required instead. through review of medical literature reveals that there are no credible studies that support a causative relationship. the concept that favouring 1 upper limb can result in injury or illness in the other is not based on scientific evidence; instead it is an unsupportable myth. " Lower Limb Injuries "Review of the medical literature reveals no generally accepted studies that support a causal relationship. the most notable editorial conducted "can favouring one leg damage the other? by Ian Harrington, MD, and W. Robert Harris, MD, refutes the reported cause and effect relationship stating "Many people and doctors believe that pain or disability in one leg can stress the other one and produce symptoms in it. we believe that there is no scientific basis for such reasoning. it may seem logical but there is no evidence to support this. What can we take away from this? We tend to explain things that make sense to us and accepted by the client. However we need to be conscious of what evidence there is available to support what we say. What we have here is a theory that makes logical sense and is easy for clients to understand but no current research has been able to validate the hypothesis. Now I'm not saying everyone's situation is the same and we would need to treat each case individually and provide justification as to why we believe this to be the case. Just saying it's because one limb is injured does not provide credible evidence-based justification to explain similar or the same symptoms in the opposite limb. This may change in the future as more research is conducted in this area. #powerphysiology #ivegotthepower #takingaction #reinforcementcycles #injurymanagement #rehabilitation #exerciserehabilitation #AEP #motivation #wellbeing #health #mentalhealth #physicalhealth #menshealth #womenshealth #determination #coachingandmentoring #exercisephysiology #mindset #evidencebased #whatdoestheresearchsay

21.01.2022 This gives me chills every time. When life knocks you down you have two choices, Stay Down And Let Life Beat You... or Get Back Up And Keep Moving Forward With Your Life. 21.01.2022 If you are given $1440 to spend in 24 hours, with anything remaining at the end of the day you lose. Could you spend it all? How much would you spend on yourself? What would you spend it on? ... Are you spending all of it? You would spend it on things that: you need, you want, Must have, would make you feel fulfilled. Now, lets change money to time There are 1,440 minutes in a day. Ask yourself now, how are you spending it? Everyone has the same amount of time in the day. If you choose to spend your time on things that don’t serve a purpose for you, why are you doing it? We tend to do things we perceive as a MUST, and if it is not a must we tell ourselves stories to convince us it is not important for us to do it. Spend your time wisely and for a purpose that serves you. Tomorrow is an illusion that never comes, there is ONLY TODAY and RIGHT NOW. 19.01.2022 The Fear of Movement (kinesiophobia) is an embedded belief that pain is harmful and threatening. Even when you are sure about the changes you want, there could still be the fears that movement will lead to more pain or further injury. This is common after an injury and in chronic pain. Overcoming these fears may not be easy and can be very scary for some people. Unwarranted pressured by others who don’t understand will only fuel these fears and make them stronger. They ca...n be overcome though, and you do not have to go through it alone. You've got this! 1 Talk to your health professionals and create an action plan together. 2 Carry out your action plan as developed. 3 Reflect, review and apply what you have learnt through the plan. #powerphysiology #ivegotthepower #takingaction #fearofmovement #kinesiophobia ##injurymanagement #rehabilitation #exerciserehabilitation #AEP #motivation #wellbeing #health #mentalhealth #physicalhealth #menshealth #womenshealth #determination #coachingandmentoring #exercisephysiology #mindset

17.01.2022 There is nothing worse than being set back by injury. Not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well. We need to be aware that something that may appear to be minor to us, can have a significant and detrimental impact on the individual life. Through rehabilitation, the Individual spends a lot of time with their health professionals and see them as an integral part of their recovery. As such we are the best people to assist them in ensuring their mindset and physic...al recovery are in line with their goals. Working with the client, we must: Address the biopsychosocial barriers Work collaboratively with other Health Professionals involved in the individual’s care Educate them on their injury, recovery and getting back to life activities Create an environment that is supportive and positive Provide open and consistent two-way communication to understand and provide support Set goals not only for recovery but for work and social lives outside the injury as well #powerphysiology #ivegotthepower #takingaction #reinforcementcycles #injurymanagement #rehabilitation #exerciserehabilitation #AEP #motivation #wellbeing #health #mentalhealth #physicalhealth #menshealth #womenshealth #recovery #coachingandmentoring #exercisephysiology #mindset

13.01.2022 It is important to know the differences between professionals. in this weeks comparison we look at the differences between Physiotherapists and Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) Lets be clear, this is not an attack post or one to claim which profession is "better" as they are both professionals in their respected fields. ... However knowing the difference will assist in ensuring you get the most appropriate professional to assist you with your individual circumstances. Whilst there is some overlap in their target clients, there are some differences and similarities between Physios and AEPs in the the following areas: (note this list is a brief general overview and in no way a comprehensive comparison) Education Skills Governance Approach Knowledge Health Care Professional Recognition Scope of Practice As everyone's individual circumstances are different, it is difficult to say who you should decide to employ to assist you. Whilst I personally would have my own preference, I acknowledge that others have their own opinions also. If you are unsure, The Best thing to do is to talk to multiple professionals in different areas to be sure whoever they may be, they are able to assist you in whatever way you may need. we are always open to having an open chat about if our services are the best services for you. #powerphysiology #bodymindexcelence #PhysiovsAEP #physiotherapy #AEP #Exercisephysiology #knowthedifference

13.01.2022 It's no secret, the ones that achieve their definition of success are the ones that work hard and put in the effort when no one else is watching. Last week, a client broke down in emotional tears after she was able to climb up and down stairs without the use of handrails. I saw how much being able to complete that task meant to that client. Reinforcing it wasn't the effort she put in for 30 minutes, twice a week, whilst being supervised, it was her determination to apply wh...at she learnt and adapting her behaviours for the remaining 10,020 minutes of the week which has got her to the position she is in now. Of course we had some set backs and some weeks have been better than others physically and mentally, however its that determination that will always prevail. Put in the effort because YOU WANT TO not because others are watching. #powerphysiology #ivegotthepower #takingaction #reinforcement #injurymanagement #rehabilitation #exerciserehabilitation #AEP #motivation #wellbeing #health #mentalhealth #physicalhealth #menshealth #womenshealth #determination #coachingandmentoring #exercisephysiology #mindset #motivation #motivationalquote #motivationalmonday #mondaymotivation #inspireothers #inspiration #desireanddetermination #supportiveenvironment

"The doctor said Roger would never be able to walk and would likely have to be taken care of for the rest of his life. But neither Roger nor his parents ever believed that this genetic defect would stop Roger from achieving greatness."... Roger went on to participate in a number of sports with tennis being his passion, and now motivates others to not let their disabilities stop them from their dreams. his biography can be found here. http://ow.ly/PS3E50B6Rc4 it just goes to show, there is always a way to do what you want and have the determination for. 06.01.2022 Motivational Quote of the week!

06.01.2022 3 main steps to change anything in life 1 See it as it is Own the situation, tell yourself the truth, relay the truth to others. If you are not being truthful to yourself you are not seeing it as it is. This includes making excuses and telling yourself what you want to hear to support your perception or belief as oppose to being open minded to challenge it. ... 2 Get clear on the result you want, see it as you want to be. Have goals and targets, have a vision as to what you see the situation to be. Make it clear and specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and have a time frame. 3 Make it the way you want to see it. Set actions and complete them. Hold yourself accountable for your actions and inactions. #powerphysiology #ivegotthepower #takingaction #makingchange #betruthful #opentochange #challengeyourthinking #injurymanagement #rehabilitation #exerciserehabilitation #AEP #motivation #wellbeing #health #mentalhealth #physicalhealth #menshealth #womenshealth #determination #coachingandmentoring #exercisephysiology #mindset

05.01.2022 When bad things happen, we attract more and more bad things our way. At the same time when good things happen we attract more and more good things our way. Our actions or in-actions determine which cycle we remain in which in itself can reinforce and strengthen that particular cycle. and this can occur with any event in our lives.... Take being injured for example, an injury leads to more symptoms and depending if we choose to take action or avoid the symptoms will start the cycle. It may take a few attempts and you may shift between the two cycles, however once you find what works for you, eventually it will lead to improvement. An important note that the longer you spend in a particular cycle the stronger it gets making shifting more difficult. #powerphysiology #ivegotthepower #takingaction #reinforcementcycles #injurymanagement #rehabilitation #exerciserehabilitation #AEP #motivation #wellbeing #health #mentalhealth #physicalhealth #menshealth #womenshealth #determination #coachingandmentoring #exercisephysiology #mindset
