24.01.2022 S U N - S A L U T A T I O N - S A F A R I This workshop is designed for those curious about what a functional approach to yoga is. We are going to take a deep dive into this much loved sequence of poses with a depth that will make you feel STRONG and STABLE.... We will together unpack all these movements and dive into all the questions you've ever had about sun salutations. By the end of the workshop you will see this sequence as a tool for discovery and exploration. You will get to learn new approaches, use new tools and techniques to discover more strength and spaciousness than ever before. What you will learn: How to mobilise and stabilise your spine including how to make back bends feel great, How to create the kind of strength you need for push-ups/chaturangas, What to do to prevent your wrists from getting sore, What role your pelvis plays in the movement of your spine, How to make forward folds feel safer and how to create more hamstring resilience, A general introduction into mobility work and how this can help you to create more resiliency in all your joints. The workshop is happening Saturday 5th of September (2-5pm) via ZOOM. It will be recorded so even if you can't make it on the day you can get access to the recording as well! 18.01.2022 Alignment based yoga? Do you think that the correct way to move is by working with precise alignment and the exact stacking of bones on top of one another and a system of 90 angles? Do you think that by venturing off that ideal alignment you are sacrificing the safety of your joints? We are all familiar with man made structures, buildings, bridges and how they are build - one brick on top of another - from the ground up. But does this principle apply to human structures ...(aka bodies) as well? Think about it: what would happen if you’d flip a building on its side? It would crumble, it’s structural integrity lost with the change of position. Do you experience that when you change your position relative to gravity (let’s say by lying down for savasana)? I hazard a guess and say NO! So if these same principles don’t apply to humans then why would there be any need to stack joints and work with alignment? The answer is: the human body’s integrity is based on the principles of biotensegrity (biological tension based integrity or tension dependent) not continuous compression. In this model the bones function as compression struts and the fasciae and muscles are the surrounding and investing tension members. 13.01.2022 H I P E X T E N S I O N As we evolved to walk on two feet our hips developed the capacity to extend. Research indicates that we require approximately 10-20 degrees of hip extension for a healthy human gait. BUT due to the spread of sedentarism and prolonged periods of sitting (aka hip flexion) many people have 0 degrees (or even less) of hip extension available often requiring the lumbar spine to compensate leading to more compressive forces in the lower back. ... So in this weeks ZOOM class we’ll take a close look at hip extension and how to increase range uncoupled from spinal extension. 11.01.2022 UNLOCKING HIP MOBILITY Mobility training can be thought of as a combination of flexibility, strength and body control. Working through your full range of motion is fantastic for gaining mobility and neglected ranges can lead to a feeling of tightness, weakness, and constraint. ... The hip/pelvic complex is one of those areas that, in my experience, becomes very tight and restricted in a lot of people which then can lead to lower back issues, knee and ankle pain. 07.01.2022 Biomechanics as such doesn’t exist in the body. The skeleton is NOT the structural frame of the body. Forces don’t simply add up. There is no ONE perfect posture (or alignment for that matter). We are not like a building, designed to only resist force in one direction only. The human body has compressive AND tensile stability in ALL directions! Our joints are not simply a series of two way leavers. You can not reduce the COMPLEXITY of the human body & movement to the basic ph...ysics models you learned at school! Both, at the micro and macro level (all the way from the DNA, cells, fibers to muscles and bones), EVERYTHING we do can be explained much better by a TENSEGRITY model (or BIOFLOW). 06.01.2022 T H E S P I N E The vertebral column is part of the axial skeleton. In a human’s spine there are normally 33 vertebrae with the upper 24 able to articulate and move separate from each other. Segmentation of the spine is the ability to move specific joints within the vertebral column individually and intentionally. So why does this matter? Because LIFE does not happen in a neutral spine!! Whilst most people are in control of the mid-ranges of any type of motion of their joints, the shorter and longer ranges are much harder to control.
