An operation was inevitable despite the grim post operation prognosis: a full quadriplegic requiring ventilation. ‘A spinal cord injury is one of the cruelest things you can have and my family and I were devastated, but the Prince of Wales Hospital team looked after me and that made all the difference.’ In this season of generosity, please consider supporting our spinal injury patients a...nd staff by funding vital equipment for our spinal injury ward. This exceptional group of clinicians, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses, and other staff work so hard to care for the many people in our community who struggle with mental health problems. International Nurses Day is an important day to stop and celebrate, and acknowledge all that they do. Generously supported by Barzura Restaurant Bar Cafe, The Livingroom Yoga School Coogee, Brown Sugar Hair & Beauty, Just Cuts Randwick and Lindt. #powhf #InternationalNursesDay #IND2021

10.01.2022 Applications for our internal Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation Grant Rounds will be closing in two days! To mark this, we are spotlighting the work of Professor Ken Butcher and his team, who are working to dramatically improve the care of stroke patients at our Hospital through a research Grant he was awarded in 2019. POW-SPIRE includes a prospective, observational study which aims to improve the selection of stroke patients suitable for reperfusion therapy, a treatment ...which restores blood flow. The funds have allowed us to incorporate objective CT Perfusion imaging into the standard workflow of all patients presenting with a possible stroke to Prince of Wales Hospital. After rolling out the new package across the District it has proved invaluable in identifying patients from other hospitals who benefit from additional therapy here at Prince of Wales. Congratulations Professor Butcher on your work and the incredible difference you will be making to patient care! To find out more about our 2020 Grant rounds, contact [email protected]

When chatting with Jarrad, he says he is honoured to work so closely and intimately with people every day. Jarrad works hard with his patients to achieve actions we can often take for granted, such as brushing your teeth or lifting your groceries out of your car. During COVID-19, being able to build a rapport with patients from behind a mask brought a new challenge to Jarrad’s work, although he is taking this in his stride!

07.01.2022 Chloe was only 28 years old when she suffered a spinal injury during a skiing accident. When she woke up from her coma, the doctors delivered earthshattering news that she was a quadriplegic. Chloe started her journey to recovery with intensive rehabilitation at our Hospital learning to regain skills like feeding and dressing herself. You go through so many emotions, but with every bit of strength, you gain a bit more confidence and optimism. This Christmas, please support our Spinal injury patients like Chloe by funding vital medical equipment aimed to make our patients as comfortable as possible on their journey to recovery. Prince of Wales Hospital demonstrate commitment to this important measure by regularly auditing hand hygiene compliance across the facility. 02.01.2022 Spinal injuries are complex, life-altering injuries that require a team of health professionals to support patients through rehabilitation. This includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and others who are united by one goal: to empower our patients to achieve as much independence as possible physically, emotionally and psychologically. #powhf #yourhospital #supportnow

02.01.2022 Did you see that it is World Sight Day? An interesting fact about eye care is that a thorough eye examination can often alert the Ophthalmologist to medical issues that the patient may not be aware of. Eye examination can reveal clues to the body's overall health. Diabetes, high blood pressure, cancers, autoimmune diseases and sexually transmitted diseases and are among the medical issues that can be detected during an eye exam. This can allow for early detection and treat...ment. I believe that something that we do particularly well at the Prince of Wales Hospital Eye Clinic is the holistic care of the patient. Given the close relationship that we have with many specialty departments on this campus there is often opportunity for liaison and shared care of many, often complex, patients. The Hospitals eye clinic deals with a range of sight threatening situations from acute presentations of vision disturbance or injury to chronic conditions which can cause permanent, irreparable vision loss. Thus a thorough eye exam in these various circumstances can address early detection and prevention. Michael, Nurse Unit Manager of the Prince of Wales Hospital Eye Clinic.

01.01.2022 The Prince of Wales Hospital Spinal Cord Injury Unit is one of only two Units in NSW providing care for people with spinal cord injuries. The stress of the pandemic combined with a surge in DIY project attempts have led to an increase in spinal injury admissions meaning our teams are working even harder to empower our patients to achieve the maximum level of independence and quality of life through our compassionate care.
