22.01.2022 We have received a number of calls over the past two weeks from people seeking information about the random sculpture in Herdsman Lake, so we thought we would re-post a story about the work and the artist to provide you all with the background. AMP Sculpture by Pietro Porcelli The site on the corner of St Georges Terrace and William Sts PERTH, historically known as Carrs Corner, was purchased by Australian Mutual Provident Society AMP in 1910.... In 1915 they commissioned Oldham and Cox to build the AMP Chambers. This beautiful six-storey building, clad in stunning Donnybrook sandstone included decadent interiors and fittings, predominately made from jarrah. Positioned atop of the building was a bronze statue created by Italian/Australian artist Pietro Porcelli, who AMP commissioned to create a symbolic and identifying sculpture that would become an iconic symbol throughout Perth and broader Western Australian communities. The nearly 4 meter high statue depicted four figures- a central figure that symbolised protection; flanked by three family figures - a man, woman and child, collectively representing the family values brand that was AMP in the 1920s. Weighing in excess of 900 kilograms, the bronze sculpture was hollow with a wooden base and is understood to have been poured in Europe, as most bronzes were in the days during and immediately after World War 1. In 1971, AMP announced plans to demolish the building and erect in its place a modern skyscraper. At the time, the National Trust refused to classify the building with Trust administrators instead applauding the development and the open space that would be created as part of the new build. Although the building could not be saved from demolition, the statue, by this time an identifiable beacon throughout the community, was saved by Clive Rutty, the genius behind Antiques Restoration Centre in Osborne Park (who sadly passed away in 2012), and purchased by Lew Whiteman avid collector, restorer, farmer and major landowner and owner of the majority of land upon which Whiteman Park, his namesake legacy, now sits. Paying $1,000 for the sculpture in 1972, some 15 years later, AMP contacted Lew Whiteman asking to buy back the statue back with Whiteman telling defiantly NO - you do not deserve it. Upon Whitemans death in 1994, the statue was presented at auction and purchased by land developers Sherwood Overseas for $60,800 and installed in the centre of the lake in Floreat Waters, on the western side of Herdsman Lake to satisfy their public art obligations.

22.01.2022 FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL GROVE Dr Jon Tarry Jon Tarry Art 2000 and 2014 Kings Park... Arts is the bedrock of all society. When our community is in crisis the arts provide a critical platform for communication, expression, respect and healing, be it through the spoken word, visual arts, music, performance or public offerings. In this context, public art presents a vital public realm offering that permits our community to congregate, communicate, express and heal, whilst presenting a lasting legacy of remembrance for a certain cause or issue. It was great to see so many people buzzing around the Firefighters Memorial Grove in Kings Park this morning, placing offerings of respect, congregating, picnicking and generally meeting to offer thought and respect. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK Fire Fighters Memorial Grove is a place of gratitude and reflection for fallen Fire Fighters of Western Australia, as well as a symbol of the sacrifices that all Australian Fire Fighters and their families make to keep our country safe. Commissioned by the Fire and Emeregeny Services Authority of Western Australia, it was launched in July 2000. In 2014 additional sculptural elements were added by way of bronze figures and landscaping, to coincide with the Fire and Emergency Services International Fire Fighters Day commemorations. These bronze figures tell the story of comradeship felt among Australian Fire Fighters, the sorrow for the fallen and the ongoing role our Firefighters play in confronting and managing the continual danger of Australian bushfires. ABOUT THE ARTIST Dr Jon Tarry is a Western Australian artist who creates art as a way of testing ideas about the prosaic, political and poetic, in the form of sculpture, drawing, film and sound. His work explores art and architectural conditions as a comparative investigation of spatial intelligence. The process of creating his works informs a new understanding of the medium and the subject he is examining. For Tarry, the act of generating his art is just as significant as the work itself. Tarry has completed 42 public and numerous private art commissions in Australia, the USA, the Middle East and Europe. Works include - Convergence at Optus Stadium; Bessie at Elizabeth Quay; Elevation at St John of God Hospital Murdoch; Clouds at Perth City Link; Naturescape at Kings Park; Sky Shard Canberra; among many international commissions throughout London, Los Angeles and Amman. #AustralianBushfires #perthpublicart @CityofPerth @KingsPark

22.01.2022 Baba Yaga Houses I Marwa Fahmy I 2012 Baba Yaga Houses are a suite of whimsical, brightly coloured sculptures by West Australian artist Marwa Fahmy, installed at Museum Park in the North Metropolitan TAFE precinct of Northbridge. Comprising of three individual but complimentary sculptural elements, Baba Yaga Houses draw inspiration from the Russian fairy-tale of Baba Yaga, and depict Baba as a ferocious-looking old woman who flies around the forest in a mortar wielding a pest...le, who lives deep in the forest in a ghoulish hut mounted on chicken legs. According to Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga may help or hinder those that encounter or seek her out and even play a maternal role. She is enigmatic with striking beauty and has a deep connection with forestry wildlife. Fahmys fairy tale houses are rendered in cast and engraved aluminium and reinforced internally by powder-coated steel; the tallest stands at 3.2 metres and the lowest at 2.4 metres high. The engraved aluminium bodies are wildly patterned. Commissioned as part of the Museum Street Precinct Park Public Art Project comprising a public art competition, the project was jointly run by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) and Central Institute of Technology (Central), now North Metropolitan TAFE. At the time of installation, Marwa said I wanted to introduce a design that would be quirky, fun and express the multiculturalism found in the area. 19.01.2022 Tony Jones I Sea Queen and Standing Figure I 2002 Sea Queen was created by formidable West Australian artist Tony Jones and occupies a wonderful position in the beautiful Claisebrook Cove of East Perth. Sea Queen was created to reflect the artists childhood, when learning to sail, swim and fish in the Swan River. Memories of a life on the river are also represented in Standing Figure, the accompanying abstract female figure holding a sailboat, her pivoting head always turned... to the direction of the wind. The fishing boat in Sea Queen was rescued, restored and repurposed by the artist and is an old fishing boat moored against a dock at the waters edge representing another aspect of river life. About the artist Tony Jones is a West Australian artist working predominantly as a sculptor across a range of mediums and ideas from his studio and factory in OConnor. Tony has often articulated his vision as encompassing and combining cultural and political issues, local history, maritime and aeronautical imagery as well as themes from the personal and the imagined. His sculpture is based on an expression of personal and public concerns, anxieties, hopes and aspirations, drawing on common symbols and myths as a way of making contemporary connections. It has been this search for forms and narratives, gestures and contexts, that transcend any one incident or time. Tonys public art practice has seen him commissioned to create artworks throughout central and outer Perth, including the phenomenal C.Y. OConnor statue in the Indian Ocean near Coogee; Perth Childrens Hospital; Rounding the Weathermark at Murdoch University; Aspire at Perry Lakes Stadium and Eliza at Crawley Baths. Tony is a regular contributor to Sculpture at Bathers Fremantle; Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe; Freestyle at Bicton Baths; with his works across multiple Perth locations, including Ronald McDonald House, Mundaring Weir, Fiona Stanley Hospital, SubiCentro, Alkimos, Nedlands and Brighton, to name but a few. In 2008, Tony was Citizen of the Year WA (Arts) and in 2009 he was awarded an Order of Australian Medal. 18.01.2022 Regeneration 2002 Joanna Lefroy Capelle Claisebrook Inlet EAST PERTH Regeneration is a 20-meter figurative mural, painted with acrylic and resin on etched cement render. Located in in a beautiful large niche under Victoria Gardens on the Claisebrook inlet, Regeneration was commissioned by the East Perth Redevelopment Authority in 2002.... Regeneration traces the history of East Perth from its earliest Aboriginal inhabitants, through the turbulence of early colonisation and the arrival of the Europeans, the horticultural and industrial phases of development to the current regeneration. About the Artist Joanna Lefroy Capelle is a West Australia artist, who worked with the WA Newspapers Ltd, as the first female cadet artist, alongside cartoonists Cedric Baxter and Bill Mitchell, artists Bruce Wroth and Stewart Cownie and caricaturist Clive Gordon, with the legendary Paul Rigby down the hall. During this time Joanna wrote and illustrated a half page of fashion for the Daily News and subsequently Sydney Morning Herald, a role she held for several years whilst based in Perth. Her works are highly figurative narratives which focus with humour and sensitivity on the everyday and the complexity yet simplicity of human nature. A Fine Arts graduate from Edith Cowan University, Joannas first public art commission, was Regeneration, which quickly led to her second major public art project, a 250-meter mural of etched cement render and natural oxide on the retaining walls of the Graham Farmer Freeway, at the Western Entrance to the Northbridge Tunnel. This work depicts the history of Northbridge from its early Indigenous people to settlement by Europeans, through the areas various transitions, culminating in the thriving multicultural community of today. The last panel features the Indigenous AFL legend, Polly Farmer, handballing into the tunnel. Joanna has held numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout WA, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Canada. She is represented in private, public and corporate collections throughout Australia, and in the UK, USA, Canada, Spain, The Netherlands, France and Greece. 16.01.2022 A very exciting announcement made by the State Government of Western Australia earlier this week is ELEVATE a new rooftop venue to be built atop of the Art Gallery of Western Australia. ELEVATE will be a 500-person venue featuring an open-air sculpture park, a new internal gallery on the roof, an external lift and sky bridge for after-hours access, capturing amazing views of our city and the Perth Cultural Centre. Take a look at the preliminary design video ... https://www.facebook.com/MarkMcGowanMP/videos/727270801390878 About Christopher Pease Integral to the overall design of ELEVATE will be a major public artwork by Nyoongar artist Christopher Pease. Christopher has been commissioned by the Art Gallery of Western Australia to create a public artwork which will span 34 metres, enveloping one third of the rooftop space. The Art Gallery of Western Australia says, "this work will be the largest Aboriginal art commission in the Gallerys history and will be part of the State Art Collection." ELEVATE is an exciting redevelopment of a very under-utilised area of the Art Gallery. This project will not only bring the space to life but add to the other major developments taking place and/or planned across the Perth Cultural Centre. Christopher Pease says his new work "will reflect some of the history of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River). The installation will feature multiple layers that bring into focus ideas concerning art, history and identity. Pease is a Nyoongar/Minang man, and an artist known for his meticulous primary source research. He has drawn inspiration for this commission from historical imagery in the collection of the Art Gallery of Western Australia to "bring together markers of history, of time and of place, and will celebrate the historical significance of the site and the architecture of our great state art gallery. Christopher Pease is represented by Gallery Smith Melbourne and his work can be found in significant public art collections around the world. Christopher has won major art awards around the country. 14.01.2022 Six Seasons I Paula Hart I 2019 Parkerville Children and Youth Care Following a major grant from the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, the Parkerville Children and Youth Care built the Stan and Jean Perron Child Advocacy Centre. This generous grant enabled critical services that support children and Western Australian young people facing the trauma of child abuse, to be fully integrated across many local service providers.... As part of the build, West Australian artist Paula Hart was commissioned to work with children to create designs that were unique, highly pictorial and ensured a community voice. Taking children on a journey of discovery, thought and creativity, Paula asked them to think about what we wear, what we eat and how we play. She made connections between the swooping magpies, the end of footy season and athletics carnivals. She asked them to consider observations - how animals bunker down for the cold and so do we; how grandmas buy us warm pyjamas and slippers at Easter instead of chocolate to get ready for the cold. She explored what kids enjoy the most throughout the year - Chinese New Year, the Perth Royal Agricultural Show. From the sessions, Paula created a list of contemporary images which she correlated with a list of Noongar plants & animals, taking the children through a step by step process of instructing, drawing, stopping, listening, drawing again. This was followed by the detailed task of combining the childrens individual drawings into six major artworks. Of critical importance to Paula was maintaining the integrity of the childrens drawings, which she achieved through collaboration with project partners - public art coordinator, architect, indigenous advisor, client, engineers, laser cutter, powder coater, installer and builder. As a new building built within the old Midland Railway yards, the design echoed the old buildings structure, with 6 large openings - perfectly suited to a series of large artwork screens. Throughout the South of Western Australia, the Noongar seasonal calendar includes six different seasons. These are Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang. About the Artist Paula occupies a unique position in the Western Australian arts community. She is an artist who has diversified her working life in several directions whilst maintaining a visual arts practice of the highest calibre. Embracing public artworks, the arts, education sector and festival arts, Paula works with a driving commitment to create art employing processes of community participation, cultural mapping and identity. 13.01.2022 Holocaust Memorial l 1995 l Stirling Gardens In 1995, the City of Perth, the Western Australia Jewery and the State Government of Western Australia collaborated on the commissioning of a memorial dedicated to the many victims of the Holocaust. Situated in Stirling Gardens in the CBD of Perth City, the Holocaust Memorial commemorates the 6,000,000 Jewish men, women and children who perished in the Holocaust during World War II. It also commemorates the 600,000 Romany (Gypsies...) and millions of other civilians who died at the hands of the Nazi regime because of their religious, political, social beliefs and/or ethnic affiliations. The Holocaust was the genocide of approximately six million European Jews and millions of others during World War II. It was a programme of systematic state-sponsored murder by Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, throughout Nazi occupied territory. Of the nine million Jews who had resided in Europe before the Holocaust, approximately two-thirds perished. Broad definitions of the Holocaust include the Nazis genocide of millions of people in other groups, including Romani (more commonly known in English as Gypsies), Sinti, Soviet prisoners of war, Polish and Soviet civilians, homosexuals, people with disabilities, Jehovahs Witnesses and other political and religious opponents, which occurred regardless of whether they were of German or non-German ethnic origin. The Holocaust Memorial contains 4 plaques, one of which captures part of the famous poem by Pastor Niemoeller First They Came. Pastor Niemoeller was a German theologian and Lutheran pastor who is perhaps best known for his opposition to the Nazi regime during the 1930s. First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not Jewish. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not Communist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me The Holocaust Memorial takes the shape of a solid triangular pyramid and is made from Donnybrook stone sitting on a large stone base. It measures one metre high with the sculpture resting on a circular, paved area. Each side of the pyramid has a centrally embedded plaque with texts. January 27th is the international Memorial Day commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during World War II. This specific day was chosen as on the 27th January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army. The Holocaust Memorial was unveiled on the 9th November 1995 by then Lord Mayor, Dr Peter Natrass.
