23.01.2022 FAST CURE FOR THE BOOTH BOTTLENECK Rather than the cost and hassle of investing in specialised paint curing equipment, why not simply choose products that have advanced fast-cure technology built in? When it comes to reducing cycle-time and freeing up more booth time to process more jobs, PPG has a variety of cost effective, user-friendly and easy to implement product options you can access right now. It starts at the priming stage where PPG’s top selling UV8080 UV Cured Prim...er Surfacer offers the remarkable ability to work 75% faster on smaller, quick turnaround repairs. The fact that it cures in only three minutes under an approved ultraviolet lamp (such as the Honle LED UV Lamp from PPG) helps it make a valuable contribution to cycle-time reduction but this is just one of the many advantages. Because it comes in a super-convenient aerosol can there is no mixing and no waste just shake, spray the required area and after curing and sanding, the priming / topcoat process can begin immediately. UV8080 can also produce amazing, single application film builds of up to 120 microns and, because it’s transparent when cured, the primer patch doesn’t increase the repair size, thus saving on topcoat application. Last, but not least, aerosol delivery creates very little overspray which saves on masking time, materials and disposal costs. Building on this speed is as easy as using the region’s most popular refinish system, PPG’s ENVIROBASE High Performance waterborne basecoat system. As well as being amazingly user-friendly and easy to blend, it can also be tack-ragged and de-nibbed. Best of all, Envirobase HP offers incredible speed, even compared with solvent-borne, with flash-off time that is exceptionally quick. When it comes to adding a final piece to your cycle-time reduction, as well as to the job, it’s difficult to go past PPG’s LVC-105 EnviroFIVE Clearcoat. Featuring all new resin technology that resets the benchmark for modern clearcoats, it offers the extraordinary ability to cure in just five minutes, yet without any compromises. Where conventional ‘fast’ clears can be finicky to apply and lose gloss after baking, EnviroFIVE is very easy to apply and reproduce any factory clearcoat finish. Further advantages include no flash-off between coats or prior to baking, a super short bake time which saves on booth energy consumption and easy polishing. What’s more, a long pot life (compared to ‘fast’ clears) means it’s perfect for anything from a spot repair, through to multiple panels. In a modern collision repair centre where the spray booth is often a limiting factor for production capacity, this trio of off-the-shelf products are just an example of the unprecedented PPG options on offer to help cut booth cycle-time without investing in extra equipment. Featuring its star drivers, a fun and informative promotional video has been launched on Shell V-Power Racing Team’s social media channels. Filmed at PPG’s Morningside Training Centre, in Brisbane, it takes the two Ford Mustang Supercars pilots way out of their comfort zone, as they tackle three typical collision repair-type tasks in a winner takes all contest. The day went off even better than expected, says Mark Haywood, PPG Queensland Training Manager. In conjunction with the Shell V-Power Racing Team crew, we brainstormed concepts that would provide a challenge for Scott and Fabian and they were well and truly up for it. Rather than just throw them in the deep end, we explained each competitive task, gave them a demonstration and even some practice time. We were expecting some disastrous outcomes when they got the spray guns in their hands but they actually did a really good job, even though they had never spray painted anything before. Each competitive task was about doing it as quickly as possible while also achieving the best outcome. It was close but you will have to watch the video to see who the overall winner was! This latest collaboration highlights the strong, long term partnership between the Shell V-Power Racing Team and PPG, according to Jackson Stubbs, Partnership & Digital Media Manager for the team. Given the COVID-19 pandemic is limiting what we can do in other areas, this was about exploring other mutually beneficial promotional opportunities. Capturing the competitive nature of our drivers, in a fun, informational video is a great way to increase PPG’s exposure to the team’s extensive fan base.

14.01.2022 COFFEE BUZZ For this commercial coffee machine, it wasn’t enough to just produce an awesome shot of caffeine it also had to deliver a healthy dose of pizzazz! A truly great cup of coffee at a favourite cafe is almost a religious experience for many people and, as Nathan Knight and Mary Eagle-Frith found out, ambiance and style play a key part. The couple had only thrown open the doors of their new business, Knight's Body Works, in Cairns, North Queensland, on the 8th Jun...e 2020 but were quickly inundated with work. Both are qualified spray painters who worked hard to establish a strong reputation for quality work, says Mary. Nathan and I met in the industry and we both have a good level of experience so we decided to go out on our own with Knight’s Body Works. Within the very first day of opening we were booked out a month in advance and it has gone on from there. As well as fabrications, we do anything that can be painted cars, motorcycles, boats, glass splashbacks and even coffee machines. In fact, a coffee machine was the first job I did after we opened. The customer wanted it customised to exactly fit the décor of the shop it was going in to. I suggested we pick an existing colour from a vehicle manufacturer so it could be easily matched or repaired in the future. We ended up picking a BMW pearl white, with a green brand badge and pinstripe. When starting the business, Mary and Nathan worked with their PPG Territory Manager, Wayne Maunder, to install PPG’s ENVIROBASE High Performance waterborne basecoat system, along with a suite of Envirobase High Performance low-VOC primer and clearcoat technologies. It provided all the tools needed for a cost-effective, high quality finish, including the ability to easily select and mix the pearl white using PPG’s PAINTMANAGER XI colour management software. The process for prepping and painting the coffee machine was exactly the same as if I was doing a car and the result looks just as good. Best of all, the customer loves it and is thinking of getting more done in the future!

This beauty came to us only needing some minor repairs, a fresh coat of paint with pearl white stripes and a colour sand and buff. Unfortunately it started to rain when we were ready to take some photos

05.01.2022 When TAFE students wanted to show their Vibrance, PPG delivered! VIBRANCE COLLECTION finishes take centre stage as PPG’s training team provides specialised custom paint training that engages and inspires! As part of PPG’s close, long term relationship with TAFE colleges around the country, the Queensland refinish training team make regular visits to TAFE NSW Wollongbar, in northern NSW, to provide specialised training for budding spray painters in the first, second and third... years of their course. When a group of third year students were given the choice of course content, the answer was unanimous custom paint techniques. As a result, Queensland Refinish Training Manager, Mark Haywood, swung into action preparing a series of panels for the group and its two TAFE teachers. I have never seen a group so engaged and enthusiastic as we progressed our way through a range of custom paint techniques, including marbleising, holographics, aged patina, overlays, scaling, line work, etc. They even worked through their lunchtime and breaks and stayed late in the day. We challenged them to come up with their own custom designs for their work. The star was RADIANCE II CANDY but they also took advantage of a host of other special effect finishes from the Vibrance Collection, along with ENVIROBASE High Performance waterborne basecoat. When people look at an amazing custom paint job, the tendency is to think, ‘I could never do that’. However, the reality is that it’s not that difficult with a little training, along with easy to use Vibrance Collection products that create incredible finishes. Let’s face it, run-of-the-mill refinish work can get a bit mundane so, hopefully, this extra skillset might inspire these young tradespeople to take on a little custom work on the side. All of the students were incredibly enthusiastic and engaged and, at the end of the two-day course, they were blown away and totally inspired by what they were able to achieve!
