22.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS!!! Federal Health Minister Hon Greg Hunt announced a new review of the evidence of natural therapies. The PRACI Steering Committee want to extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to our members for their ongoing participation in PRACI projects. Last week you will have seen that Federal Health Minister Hon Greg Hunt announced a new review of the evidence of natural therapies. This announcement was made in response to significant concerns raised by many groups about... the use of the previous (and flawed) Natural Therapies Review to inform the decision to remove access to private health insurance rebates for a range of services. What many people do not know is how important data collected from members of PRACI was in driving this decision. A group of collaborators from the Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia, the Australian Register of Naturopaths and Herbalists and University of Technology Sydney including PRACI Steering Committee members Dr Amie Steel and Associate Professor Jon Wardle drafted a document which overviewed the effectiveness, utility, cost, safety and contribution to healthcare of naturopathic medicine in Australia. This document was hand-delivered to Minister Hunt and contributed to the Minister’s decision to revisit the evidence. Importantly, this document included a wealth of information about real-life grass-roots naturopathic practice in Australia and that data came from you! We at PRACI firmly believe that the Australian naturopathic profession would not have this opportunity if not for the time and energy YOU put in to documenting your experiences, perceptions and practices through the many PRACI substudies you are invited to participate in. It is very easy to overlook the contribution you make when it feels like you are only one person participating in a research project, so we wanted to let you know: what you have done, and are doing, DOES make a difference. Thank you! The submission has been published in the Australian Journal of Naturopathic and Herbal Medicine so take a look. Share it around! Be Proud! https://gallery.mailchimp.com//Wardle_et_al_2019_An_eviden

11.01.2022 Assessment of the Safety of Melatonin PRACI member Hope Foley with the help of Dr Amie Steel, Chair of the PRACI Steering Committee, has published a critical review examining the safety of melatonin supplementation. With the use of melatonin increasing worldwide and extending to new areas of treatment, beyond its traditional use as a sleep aid, this review provides a timely and important overview of adverse events reported in clinical studies of the neurohormone. The review f...ound melatonin is rarely associated with adverse events, and those which do occur are generally minor, short-lived and easily managed. However, there are some exceptions; further research is required to better understand how melatonin might interact with anti-hypertensive drugs or the impact on hormones related to reproduction and glucose metabolism. In addition, it may be particularly important to dose at night, in keeping with the body’s natural daily rhythms, to reduce or avoid side-effects. The review has been published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine, and was conducted with support from Complementary Medicines Australia. The paper is available for temporary full access until 30 December 2018. See more

06.01.2022 A recent publication arising from a sub-study conducted through PRACI by University of Technology Sydney's Ms Carole Fisher titled: 'Cyclic Perimenstrual Pain and Discomfort and Australian Women's Associated Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine: A Longitudinal Study'. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28805552

05.01.2022 Hot Off the Press: Naturopathic Medicine for Endometriosis PRACI Member Rebecca Reid, has recently published her research on the traditional and contemporary naturopathic treatments used for the management of endometriosis and associated menstrual symptoms. Rebecca conducted this project as part of the Staff Collaborative Research and Mentoring Fund offered by Endeavour to undertake the project at the Friedhelm Kirchfeld Rare Book Collection at the National University of Natu...ral Medicine in Portland, USA. The findings of this research provided an overview of a vast range of naturopathic treatments used historically and within the contemporary setting for cases of dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia. However, endometriosis has not been reported in traditional naturopathic texts, most likely due to the obscure nature and history of the disease. Rebecca will be incorporating the results of this research into the next two stages of her research program that will further investigate the use of naturopathic care by women with endometriosis in Australia. The article has been published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Congratulations Rebecca! See more

05.01.2022 Amongst the major reforms recently announced by the Australian government to the private health insurance (PHI) system are the removal of government-subsidised PHI rebates for consultations with most unregistered complementary medicine practitioners. This commentary by Dr Matthew Leach and Dr Amie Steel of the PRACI Steering Committee, outlines several doubts about these reforms and calls for an immediate rethink, at least for naturopathy. https://www.sciencedirect.com//artic/pii/S2212958817301593

05.01.2022 Dr Amie Steel reflects on her NAPCRG Presentation

03.01.2022 The ICCMR 2019 has a strong focus on strengthening partnerships between clinicians and researchers. The Organising Committee believes strongly in engaging clinicians in the development of new research directions that reflect grass roots practice. This is why we have developed a Clinical category within our abstract submission guidelines. Clinicians who have observed interesting outcomes in clinical practice or developed innovative complementary and integrative approaches to ...health conditions in clinical practice are invited to submit a summary proposal or abstract - to present at the conference. This includes Clinical hypothesis submissions through which clinicians can draw attention to a unique and novel clinical phenomena not yet investigated through research. Through Clinical abstract submissions such as this, practitioners are able to share their insights and expertise with the international research community. Take the opportunity to open up new research that matters to you in your practice. Get involved! http://iccmr2019.com/submissions/ See more

The findings regarding N...aturopathy, Nutrition, Homeopathy, Traditional Chinese medicine and Western Herbalists members of PRACI who reported prescribing Homeopathy, were well received by the conference attendees and will go towards guiding future research in Homeopathy. 01.01.2022 Pragmatic research Traditional clinical trials study the effectiveness of treatments delivered to carefully selected populations under ideal conditions. This makes it difficult to translate results to the real world. Pragmatic research is designed to reflect the realities of daily routine care and produces evidence that can be readily used to improve care. Unlike most traditional RCTs, pragmatic studies take place in settings where everyday care happens, such as community cl...inics, hospitals, and health systems. There are a number of core characteristics of pragmatic studies: they answer questions from, and important to, stakeholders such as patients and clinicians; they include diverse, representative populations; they are conducted in multiple, heterogenous settings; multiples outcomes are measured that are important to decision- and policy-makers; the comparison intervention are real-world alternative, not a placebo or treatment. This paper presents some strengths and weaknesses of pragmatic clinical trials. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMra1510059 See more
