23.01.2022 The Brisbane Magistrates Court has filed three charges, each with a maximum penalty of $1.5M, against the parent company of Dreamworld Gold Coast - Ardent Leisure. Ardent Leisure has made indications it will be pleading guilty to the charges, updating the Australian Stock Exchange with a statement (presumably a less than favourable financial outlook). An update is to be released when the matter is finalised. [ 91 more words ] http://www.practicalwhs.com.au/u/dreamworld-ardent-leisure/

23.01.2022 There certainly is scope for harsher penalties that target gross negligence leading to death of workers. The recommendations are there in black and white from the Boland review of the WHS Act and Regulation. This heartbreaking story puts a name and face on the consequences of such negligence, making it real for those who don't quite get it. The company and its management must be held to account for this tragedy. [ 50 more words ] http://www.practicalwhs.com.au//gross-negligence-industri/

22.01.2022 The best WHS Management Systems are built on solid foundations. All the policies and procedures under the sun won't help if there are underlying "safety culture" issues. If your organisation is embarking on a WHS improvement journey, or are just taking stock of the present situation, start by looking at the culture of the organisation. Is the safety and wellbeing of people underpinning every business process? [ 50 more words ] http://www.practicalwhs.com.au/uncatego/strong-foundations/

21.01.2022 It is pleasing to see the final report from the review of the "model" WHS Legislation now available for the rest of us to get our heads around. Changes coming? Well I hope so. There are some interesting recommendations made in the report, some that I can honestly say have been on my mind over the past few years and come as no real surprise, and some genuine surprises too! 17.01.2022 Sometimes, it just happens.

17.01.2022 I have been asked by many clients over the years whether Bullying is a WHS or an HR issue. In my experience, the issue is typically dealt with by the Human Resources department, with mediation and various efforts to resolve the source of indifference that might be causing the bullying to occur. There is little to criticise about that approach, with many very workable solutions coming from that space. [ 291 more words ] http://www.practicalwhs.com.au//bullying-a-whs-or-hr-issue/

14.01.2022 In an interesting article published by MYOSH in their blog, comes what some might see as a startling revelation, but what most safety professionals knew to be the case all along - failure to manage Health and Safety can cost a business in a big way. Who knew! For more information, read the full article here. There are so many reasons to be on the front foot with management of all things Health and Safety related. 14.01.2022 The Work Health and Safety Amendment (Information Exchange) Bill 2020 has recently commenced in NSW, providing for the exchange of information relating to Silicosis, Asbestosis and Mesothelioma between NSW Health and SafeWork NSW. The Bill will see Section 271B added to the WHS Act, enabling the Ministry of Health (NSW Health) to share information with the Regulator (SafeWork NSW) about cases of work related silicosis, asbestosis and mesothelioma. 13.01.2022 The risks are known, and easily mitigated. Given the readily available, widely used and relatively affordable options available to prevent this type of incident, the fine handed down to the Director could easily have been more substantial. Thanks to WorkSafe Victoria for this story. http://www.practicalwhs.com.au/uncategorized/risk-of-fall/

12.01.2022 It seems the age-old idea that every cloud has that silver lining, can be even be applied to workplace incidents - situations which are rarely seen as positive. An Enforceable Undertaking is an option available for SafeWork NSW as part of their suite of enforcement options. The idea, to enter into an agreement with a PCBU to undertake certain actions following an incident. [ 127 more words ] http://www.practicalwhs.com.au//caltex-fuel-a-silver-lini/

12.01.2022 The death of a young person in any workplace is particularly tragic. Until the investigation details are available, it would be foolish to jump to conclusions about the cause of this incident. In some cases, despite the very best intentions and effort of business owners, unwanted events still occur.

11.01.2022 It is not surprising that there have been a number of Workers Compensation Claims related to COVID-19. In fact, according to Safe Work Asutralia's research, there were 533 claims lodged up to 31 July 2020 with 253 claims accepted to date. This number will no doubt increase, though should not rise significantly with Australia's effective management of the the virus. 10.01.2022 On just the second day of 2019 in a news bulletin from WorkSafe Victoria, we have learned of a farming accident which saw a 2 year old killed at a property in south west Victoria. A devastating start to the year for the family involved. Hopefully the campaign WorkSafe Victoria has embarked on to turn the tables on ag related fatalities will hit the target. 09.01.2022 A little perspective on the importance of this issue - well worth investing some time in prevention...

07.01.2022 You can't deny the overall result is positive, a 53% decline in worker fatalities since 2007. I might be going out on a limb, but surely the end of the graph looking like a big tick is a bad thing! Safe Work Australia has published it's latest Work-related Traumatic Injury Fatalities Australia report, taking us up to 2019, which saw a spike in workplace fatalities and traumatic injuries. http://www.practicalwhs.com.au/uncategorized/positive-spin/

06.01.2022 One of the most obvious, and widely used, tools in the "Safety Toolbox" could well be the sign. From the front door to the emergency exit out the back, and everywhere in between, you'll find signs stuck on walls, equipment, doorways and anything else that could possibly pose a risk and support a sign. But what is the point? Experience tells me that less is very often more when it comes to signage. [ 612 more words ] http://www.practicalwhs.com.au/uncategorized/safety-signs/

04.01.2022 A great example of the importance of supervision of workers. In this particular case, a recruitment specialist placed workers at a showground under a "work for the dole" scheme, though failed to provide adequate supervision to ensure their health and safety while at work resulting in the death of a worker. A lack of training was also a consideration, with procedures available but workers not trained. [ 132 more words ] http://www.practicalwhs.com.au/uncatego/supervision-is-key/
