23.01.2022 ANZAC Day 2020 will not look like the ANZAC Day that so many of us are used to participating in. There will be a Dawn Service, wreaths will be laid, the last po...st will be played, a minute of silence in memory of the fallen will be observed, but the service community and the public will be asked to stay at home. This does not mean that ANZAC Day is cancelled. It just means that ANZAC Day will be different. In 2020, on April 25, while you can't go to the Shrine of Remembrance or a local Dawn Service, the RSL is asking that instead you #STANDTO. As the Last Post is played during the ANZAC Day Dawn Service walk outside, stand in your yard, driveway, or on your balcony and observe a minute of silence in respect of our veterans. Make sure that you snap a quick picture and share it right here on our Facebook page using the hashtag #STANDTO. Together, let's amplify our commitment to the ANZAC spirit. Lest We Forget.

23.01.2022 April 25 marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli Landing, but ANZAC Day is for everyone. We appreciate the men and women who are continuing the legacy of the ori...ginal ANZACs! This ANZAC Appeal we thank all those who have worn the uniform in the service of this country. #STANDTO and donate today at anzacappeal.com.au. See more

22.01.2022 At 11am on Sunday 19 April the Shrine Guard will lay a wreath in honour of the service men and women who usually would have been commemorated on this day. The A...ustralian-Maltese community holds an annual service of remembrance in April each year. This time marks the award of the George Cross to the island by King George VI of the United Kingdom in a letter dated 15 April 1942 so as to 'bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people' during the tremendous hardships they suffered in the early days of the Second World War. This wreath laying will also commemorate the service personnel of the Loyal Orange Institute of Australia who hold their annual service in April.

22.01.2022 The message on this card Happy Easter, I dont forget you is one we should all take to heart most especially this year. Easter has long been a time of reflect...ion, renewal and connecting with family, friends and community. Notwithstanding current constraints and challenges we encourage individuals, families and communities not to forget. Please reach out in whatever way you can and ensure that no-one is forgotten over the Easter period, particularly those who will continue in their outstanding efforts to keep us safe and well at this time. Virtual War Memorial Australia does not forget you.

21.01.2022 Today is Reserve Forces Day! Many of our fulltime personnel go on to serve in the Reserve and in overall terms the nation should be justly proud of all our Res...erve forces personnel not only on Reserve Forces Day but throughout the year. We should also acknowledge the support extended by Reservists families and in many cases their civilian employers that enable them to serve the nation. A big thankyou to all of our Reserve forces personnel! #anzacspirit Image Courtesy: ADF

20.01.2022 Today our flags were raised to half-mast as a mark of respect to the members of Victoria Police who tragically lost their lives yesterday. Our thoughts are with their families and their communities.

18.01.2022 "KILLED IN ACTION. Mr. and Mrs. Falloon, of (276) Highett street, Richmond, have been officially advised that their son, Company Sergeant-Major E. J. Falloon, w...as killed in action on April 10. Sergeant-Major Falloon left Australia with the First Division on October 21, 1914. He was at the landing on Gallipoli. In France he won the Military Medal, and subsequently a bar for distinguished conduct in the field. Sergeant-Major Falloon was a brother to Mr. G. M. Falloon, accountant at the State Coal Mine. He has received many messages of sympathy from a wide circle of friends, who deeply regret the sad occurrence." - from the Powlett Express and Victorian State Coalfields Advertiser 26 Apr 1918 "Some idea of the esteem in which Sergeant-Major Ted Falloon, recently killed in action, was held by his comrades is indicated in a letter just received by his father, Mr. E. J. Falloon, "Ayrfield," Highett-street. It is dated from France on April 30 and reads:- "Mr. E. J. Falloon. Dear Sir, We desire to express the deepest sympathy to you and your family in thea loss of Sergeant-Major E. J. Falloon. We feel with the deepest regret the loss of such a fine soldier. There is a saying that the non-commissioned officer is the backbone of our army, and it was never truer than in his case. He was with the unit since its formation. The good name of the unit - and its name is respected - was to a large extent due to the sterling qualities of this soldier. His unswerving loyalty to his officers, his good-humored discipline with his men, his courage in action, were qualities that were apparent always. He was a fine soldier, a good friend and a manly man. He was killed during a counter attack in which his company was taking part, and died the death of a good soldier. His loss is felt and mourned by officers and men alike. Yours sincerely, G. W. Croker (capt.), F. Stanley Davidson (lieut.), W. A. Stewart (lieut.), E. G. Goodwin (sergeant)." - from the Richmond Guardian 22 Jun 1918 #ANZACAtHome Senator Jim Molan Penny Wong - Senator for SA Simon Birmingham Scott Morrison (ScoMo) Darren Chester MP Rebekha Sharkie MP

13.01.2022 Today is International Women's Day. We reflect on the important role that Australian women have played, and continue to play, across conflicts past and present.... Although some of the roles have changed, the commitment and dedication has not. 10.01.2022 On this International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers we remember the Australians who have served, and given their lives, on peacekeeping missions. 08.01.2022 Today on #InternationalDogDay, we remember Sarbi. Selected as a Special Forces Explosive Detection dog for her curiosity and focus, she was sent to Afghanistan ...to sniff out explosives. She went missing when a rocket exploded near her during a Taliban ambush the same incident for which Mark Donaldson was later awarded the Victoria Cross. Sarbi was listed as missing in action, but 14 months later, she reappeared, to a wave of media interest and the great joy of her handlers. The story of Sarbi the Explosive Detection Dog has become a talisman of the war in Afghanistan. It speaks of survival, mystery and the deep bonds between animals and their handlers: bonds that fascinated artists Charles Green and Lyndell Brown on their visit to Afghanistan as official artists commissioned by the Australian War Memorial. Sarbi passed away in 2015, aged 12, and is forever memorialised in this beautiful painting, on display in the Galleries of Remembrance. 07.01.2022 Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Each year on the 18th of August also known as Vietnam Veterans Day, we honour and commemorate all those w...ho served in Vietnam, including the 521 Australians who died and more than 3,000 people who were wounded, injured or became ill as a result of the conflict. The Battle of Long Tan, on 18 August 1966, was one of the fiercest battles fought by Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War, involving 105 Australians and three New Zealanders from D Company 6RAR. A total of 17 Australians were killed in action and 25 were wounded, one of whom later died of his wounds. 53 years on we still remember these brave men and women who fought our freedom and will never forget the sacrifices they made to protect our beautiful country. Please keep these brave individuals in your thoughts today. #lestweforget Images Courtesy: The Australian War Memorial

04.01.2022 'He was a true fighting commander' Jill Miles grew up hearing stories about her great uncle and would take his Victoria Cross to school. I used to walk down Hi...gh Street, Glen Iris, with the Victoria Cross, and whenever we had the Anzac Day service at school, I would wear it, she said. Imagine doing that these days. Her great uncle Leslie Maygar was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Boer War when he rode out under heavy fire and rescued a soldier whose horse was shot out from underneath him. Magyar went on to serve on Gallipoli during the First World War, and was mortally wounded at Beersheba. 02.01.2022 Each year on the 12th of May we celebrate International Nurses Day to recognise the invaluable contribution that nurses have made and continue to make in our so...ciety. This year the World Health Organisation declared 2020 the Year of the Nurse and Midwife and in light of the current worldwide health crisis we are especially thankful for the hard work, skills, and compassion that nurses provide. Nurses have played a vital role in Australias military history for more than 100 years. Today, both men and women serve as Australias military nurses working in remote and dangerous places, as well peacekeeping missions providing essential medical treatment to those ravaged by war or natural disasters. #IND2020 #InternationalNursesDay2020 You can read some of their stories and view images in our collection here: https://www.awm.gov.au/articl/blog/international-nurses-day Photo: At sea c.1919. 02.01.2022 Tomorrow marks 75-years since the Allies accepted Nazi Germanys unconditional surrender of armed forces, Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). When news of the victo...ry reached Melbourne, thousands converged on the southern slopes of the Shrine, as pictured here. Reportedly, the crowd dispersed before the service of thanksgiving had concluded due to the speaker system failing and adverse weather conditions. While no crowds will gather here tomorrow, you can join our live-streamed wreath laying from home at 11am tomorrow morning as we come together virtually in commemoration of this pivotal day in our history. 01.01.2022 The Australian War Memorial now has a memorial dedicated to Military Working Dogs. The Memorial 'Circling into sleep' by artist Steven Holland, signifies a dog'...s final steps, walking in a circular pattern before laying down to sleep. Underneath the paw prints, the ashes of Military Working Dog 426, Aussie are interred. EDD Aussie served in the Solomon Islands, Melbourne Commonwealth Games and Afghanistan. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of all the dogs who, like Aussie, have served alongside our military personnel. All of these dogs are heroes, laying their lives on the line to save others in both peace and wartime. Lest we forget.

01.01.2022 This Anzac Day The Australian War Memorial with the ABC will televise a national dawn service attended by a limited number of official guests. The service will ...be held in the Commemorative Area and Hall of Memory at 5.30 am. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional Dawn Service, National Ceremony and veterans march will not take place. The Hon Darren Chester MP, Minister for Veterans Affairs and Defence Personnel has encouraged Australians to pause and reflect this Anzac Day, despite public commemorative gatherings not taking place. While we traditionally gather in large numbers, at its heart, Anzac Day is always a moment of personal reflection where we demonstrate our solemn respect for those who have served, and those who continue to serve in our nations uniform. Whether its a solitary driveway tribute or a small family gathering on Anzac Day, I encourage all Australians to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of the over 102,000 Australians who have died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in a way that is meaningful to them. For updated information about Anzac Day please visit https://www.awm.gov.au/
