25.01.2022 I think InDaily's new social media gallery - working from home - is a brilliant idea. And not just because I made my eldest take a pic of me and it's included today https://indaily.com.au/ispy/2020/04/17/working-from-home-7/

25.01.2022 Last week, I presented a session on Media + Engagement to a group of professionals who work in local government. I shared a few of the principles I use in my public relations practice, including the importance of being a media consumer, understanding how journalists work, and understanding the key interests and agenda of journos and media outlets. It was a pleasure to explore the questions raised at the end of the session too - including the threat of fake news and myth. It's not easy working in communications in local government; as the tier of government that's closest to us, it's often politicised and 'beaten around the ears' with resident complaints. It takes resilience and patience to build and maintain a positive reputation, and this requires two-way, open and regular communication.

25.01.2022 "News Corp Australia is poised to cut hundreds of jobs as it moves towards digital-only publishing for many of its local and regional papers and more copy sharing among its metropolitan mastheads the Daily Telegraph and the Herald Sun..." from the Guardian last night (https://www.theguardian.com//news-corp-to-cut-hundreds-of-). You can see changes in news availability in Australia in the Aus Newsroom Mapping Project: https://piji.com.au//the-australian-newsroom-mapping-proj/

24.01.2022 In your quest to maintain your social media pages, to keep winning new clients or customers, and to meet various pieces of industry or government legislation - don't forget to TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. Look back at your recent communications. Scroll your LinkedIn account or Facebook page or website blog. When is the last time you told your audiences what you do? Shared what you're passionate about? Shared your best case studies?... As PR programs age, it's easy to forget that audiences should be reminded of our stories. Audiences come and go...what about your new clients, new followers, who don't know your business inside out? Don't be shy: think about all of your experiences, history and what you've learned - and TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT. #PrakkyPR

23.01.2022 Canva is always a great tool for design work. Did you know that it now provides free images (and social media templates) to communicate COVID-19 messages? Head to canva.com if you're not already a user; it's highly recommended. As always, if you are sharing COVID-19 messages, please make sure you're up to date and using official government health resources.

22.01.2022 I've registered for this webinar, coming up on Monday. Have you? >>

22.01.2022 I dont want to jump on any bandwagon and criticise South Australias official COVID-19 response, but a story that emerged in the media yesterday is the perfect example of choosing the wrong channel...

20.01.2022 Its insightful following Rachels photography work for The Covid Tales. Are you a business owner with an experience youd like to document? Check out the Little Oak Studio!

20.01.2022 Many of you would be writing and sharing COVID-19 messages for your staff, customers, clients and community. As always, ensure you're subscribed to and using official government advice, such as: https://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au... https://www.health.gov.au//novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-res https://www.who.int/emergen/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019 Many of these sites have resources for you to use and re-share. Be brief, be factual, and be on brand. Remember, this may impact people in different ways over the coming days, weeks and months. Communicate in a genuine and calm manner. Keep the lines of communication open in particular with your staff / teams. A person may seem calm and content now, but hour by hour, our feelings change as we receive more inputs and digest what's happening around us.

18.01.2022 New on Prakkypedia: some thoughts about understanding PR metrics and educating others. https://prakkypedia.prakky.com.au///14/measure-of-success/ #PrakkyPR

18.01.2022 Apologies for the language - but I saw this headline and had to say: Shit. It's a shitty time for news media, of all types. https://indaily.com.au//another-sa-media-blow-as-adelaide/

18.01.2022 Newspapers have been in flux for many years now, but in the current environment it's become even harder. "One of South Australias oldest country newspapers closed its doors today as a result of the coronavirus crisis, with News Corp also deciding to suspend printing of its Messenger newspaper titles in Adelaide ..." There are hopes The Bunyip may reopen one day. I hope so. ... https://indaily.com.au//sa-country-newspaper-closes-indef/

17.01.2022 What an amazing opportunity for a young actor. Check out the full details below!

17.01.2022 Not every woman can make it to an International Women's Day breakfast - I know it'd be an unthinkable event for my own mother and grandmothers, overwhelmed by the crowds and thinking they didn't belong there. I'm grateful to be able to attend, and thankful for the Chooks SA team for bringing tables of us together again. Remember that #IWD2020 (and feminism) isn't only about the overwhelming task of gender equity ahead of us - which is at different stages in different nations - but maintaining equity that has been gained. I feel that in this age, equity remains under attack. We can't be complacent, especially in the face of seasoned campaigners who want to pull feminists' work apart. Feminism protects all of us: our children, our grandchildren, our partners, our families, our communities.

16.01.2022 Does your organisation work with volunteers? Here's an opportunity to recognise them with a certificate from the SA Premier. Nominations are open until 27 March. https://dhs.sa.gov.au//recogniti/volunteering-certificates

16.01.2022 Is there a more wholesome feeling than cycling to your neighborhood vegan cafe for a client meeting? #prakkyPR

16.01.2022 A very interesting piece from Mumbrella, announcing its decision to remove comments from articles. I know comment-management has been a vexed and complicated issue for news media outlets for years, and many have tried different approaches to helping provide a civil conversation while being open to two-way communication. In the end, I think it comes down to two things (which this article touches on): 1. Resources... 2. Mental health That is, does the company have the resources to provide quality moderation of comments? And when online discourse (often shouting, and sledging), takes place, what is the impact on the mental health of the participants, and those employees paid for content moderation? Would love to hear your thoughts. Are you put off, if a media outlet disallows online comments?

15.01.2022 Nominations are now open for the SA Volunteer Awards. Do you know a volunteer who deserves some recognition? Check out the details below - and don't forget my free resource, the SA Awards List 2020 [https://prakkypedia.prakky.com.au/free-resource-south-aust/] which lists the Volunteer Awards amongst many others your organisation may want to take part in ...

15.01.2022 Much of the communication we create for our organisations begins with WRITING. We're writing emails, social media posts, letters, tenders, award applications and more. And writing isn't for everyone. A lot of people don't enjoy writing.... They put it off. They can't quite put their thoughts into words. In this way, it's a bit like the writer's block experienced by authors (which I know a bit about). As a PR practitioner, my advice might sound like commonsense, it might sound blunt...but it works! Just get started! It won't be perfect the first time, but sit down and begin writing what you want to say. Get it all out, even if the language is clunky or too casual. Leave it for a little while, maybe 30 minutes. Then edit and polish it. Show it to someone else (does it make sense?) Above all, don't put it off. Don't scrap your idea. People want to hear from you, and you have something to say! #PrakkyPR

14.01.2022 Women in Innovation has announced its first event of 2020. You'll get insight into what sustainability means for business and individuals at the start of a new decade. It's on 18 March. Check out the details >> https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/south-australians-pioneerin

14.01.2022 How are you all? I've been helping a client create a new guide - this means doing the editing work, creating an introduction, deciding on the titles, layout, headings format and so on. It's so much fun! And its an excellent adjunct to some (temporary) Writing & Publishing teaching I've taken on at UniSA recently. ... The most perfect COVID-19, working from home task? Probably.

13.01.2022 If readers apparently don't expect a magazine to publish the truth, let's label them as "fiction" at the checkout. What do you think?

13.01.2022 From a PR perspective, it's good to see Victoria rolling out a campaign sharing the stories of COVID-19 victims, particularly young ones. Their stories - shared via a paid media campaign as well as media interviews such as this one on News Breakfast this morning - will help cement that *this is real* in some people's minds. Not everyone is convinced of COVID's impact or effects. The early comparisons to the flu did us all a big disfavour, and hearing details from people recov...ering helps combat that. In this interview, the young man says he's still feeling short of breath and pain in his kidneys, although he's now 'recovered' and at home. In the meantime, his young partner is still hospitalised.

13.01.2022 Are you a parent of a child living with disability - or do you know someone who fits the bill? The wonderful Access 2 Place Housing is searching for participants for a Zoom discussion this Thursday. It's part of their drive to better understand family needs when helping their child transition from living at home to living more independently. See all the details below >

12.01.2022 Yesterday, news of #AAP being potentially closed began to be circulated. Today it's official: Australian Associated Press will be no more after 26 June. We've seen a lot of news media redundancies over the years, and I find this one extraordinary. If AAP can't make it - with its widely-syndicated, quality, timely content - who can? Others may race to fill the void - but what will they do differently? I feel bad for all staff, including the journos and photographers who made A...AP their home after being made redundant by other news organisations. We need verified news produced by professional journalists now more than ever. Yet ... who is tuning in, and who is willing to pay?

11.01.2022 More sad news in the media environment: there are talented writers and investigators on the BuzzFeed team. I hope they find good new gigs...

11.01.2022 It's been a busy week in PR - just the way I like it! I've helped a client gain newspaper coverage, set up a photoshoot, ghost-written a few articles, designed surveys and newsletters, managed Facebook pages, taken plenty of phone calls and taken part in good ol' Zoom meetings (haven't we all?) If you'd like assistance with your communications program too, let me know! Email [email protected] ... #PrakkyPR #publicrelationsadelaide #Adelaide

10.01.2022 Look. While we're in COVID times, a lot of you might be thinking you never want to remember this time, that you plan to put it all behind you. 04.01.2022 When businesses look at their costs at a challenging time like this, unfortunately PR, marketing and advertising can be amongst the first few items to be slashed. So I'm grateful that clients have stuck with me. For some of my clients, that's meant changing my services or direction slightly; for others, it's been a whole new raft of work that focuses on COVID-19 communication. And for others, there's been no change at all - I've remained part of their team, providing the long-term PR support I've always provided. Here's thanks to my clients - and best wishes for their ongoing business success, and the ability to stay functioning and keep their staff employed during tough times. I admire your tenacity, flexibility and all the hours you're putting in.

02.01.2022 What are your thoughts on this? "The ACCC presumes that Facebook benefits most in its relationship with publishers, when in fact the reverse is true." "...it would force Facebook to pay news organisations for content that the publishers voluntarily place on our platforms and at a price that ignores the financial value we bring publishers. "... "Over the first five months of 2020 we sent 2.3 billion clicks from Facebooks News Feed back to Australian news websites..." Facebook has been threatening this for some time. Do you get most of your news headlines here? Will you be concerned if they disappear? Also, it's unclear exactly how FB will stop Australians from sharing news here. What URLs will be 'stopped' and can FB get in the way of workarounds? https://about.fb.com//changes-to-facebooks-services-in-au/

01.01.2022 New on my blog: Good communications plans are a COVID-era business asset. This article includes a list of how you begin your own planning. #PrakkyPR #publicrelations #covidcomms
