In the context of SMSFs, the ATO would probably want to settle on a legal position to justify a characterization of income from such arrangements as 'non arms-length income' (which happened with related party lending to SMSFs at concessional or NIL interest rate). Perhaps a fun exercise would be to dig out one’s old university economics textbooks on John Nash’s game theory to see how a multi-player frenemies trade war may play out. In the meantime, the terse relationship between Australia and its largest trading partne...r China over the last little while (stance on territorial claims in the South China Sea, concerns on foreign influence in domestic politics) could have economic ramifications for Australia (education exports would be an obvious target). The sum of these competitive and geopolitical forces = Australia is in the firing line. And here we are, Australia is still arguing over whether to cut personal or company tax first. No wonder Ken Henry’s lamenting.
