23.01.2022 Haha not every one has this view from the car window

22.01.2022 FEELING HOT HOT HOT We all need to be careful that we don't put our pets at risk during this heat wave! Helping your pet to keep its cool is vital and... there are some simple things you can do that will help to do just that. - Plenty of shade is essential to help your pets stay cool. In the afternoon the sun is at its harshest, therefore you should ensure that a shady spot is provided where that afternoon sun hits the house. The coolest areas outside is underneath the house or verandah - just the spot for a pet's afternoon snooze. This is the spot where your pet's water bowls should be situated so that they remain cool (chucking in some ice cubes is especially great on a hot day!) To help your pet keep its cool while you are at work, think about providing some frozen treats for them! - You can fill a Kong toy with some canned dog food or with fresh mince then freeze it. - Use a plastic lunch box, margarine container, ice cream container or similar, make a delicious ice block using some treats (in moderation) and their kibble! - When you leave for work, give your dog its delicious, stimulating and nutritious Boredom buster on those especially hot days! A clamshell in a shady spot is a great summer treat for a hot dog You can fill it with water and your dog can drink, sit, paddle, or play in it! You can even fill one half of the clamshell with some sand and wet it down so your dog can have a cool bed to lay on through the hot days! Now that you know how to help keep your pets cool at home, we need to be very careful about their care when they are out and about with you because mistakes are easily made. The rules are simple. During this time of year it’s best not to travel with your pets where you will need to make any stops, no matter how short. The saddest mistake of all is when a dog, unintentionally dies in a hot car. Many say, "but I'm only going into the shop for a minute that ‘minute’ can very easily lead to an extended stay at a busy checkout or running into a talkative friend. This is lethal for any living being, including children. - Short nosed breeds of dogs otherwise known as Brachycephalic breeds, such as Pugs, any Bulldog breeds, Boston terriers and Pekingese are highly susceptible to heat stress. - Overweight or obese dogs and cats are at risk too, especially smaller, fat dogs. Dogs or cats with poor circulation and dogs with any respiratory or heart disease are also at risk. - Only jog or walk in the cooler times of day, either early morning or late evening. Stop regularly to give your dog a rest and a drink, or even better a cooling swim. - Take your shoe off and put your bare foot on the pavement, if it’s too hot for your barefoot it will be too hot for your pets paw pads Dogs will often ignore the messages from its body that say 'stop'. A dog's tongue will dangle from its mouth in a futile attempt to cool down. Dogs like this often collapse from circulatory failure. Heat stroke causes incredible damage to your pets organs. Affected animals will first show excitation, followed by loss of balance and seizures. A coma will follow. Heart failure is common and many other changes in body organs occur. The animal is at great risk of permanent damage. Emergency first aid is essential and you will need to get to a vet immediately. Your veterinarian will need to attempt to cool your pet down give medication to control any seizures and to prevent further damage being caused to the animal’s brain. Your pet will be placed onto an intravenous drip. Your vet may also anaesthetise your pet to prevent seizures. Heat stress is a major concern over summer but a little common sense and forward thinking is all that is required to help your pets keep their cool Please be careful.

We believe that we have delivered a true and caring service for all of the pets that we have been lucky enough to look after but now in uncertain times we hope that we can all look after each other and hope that we can come back bigger and stronger once this is all over. 03.01.2022 I would just like to remind everyone that is boarding their pets over this summer Christmas period to bring their own clam shells if they have them. The temps are going to be extreme and we will endeavour to do everything we can to keep your pets happy and comfortable. This will help us to keep water up to them all day. For those that don’t have them we can supply them but can’t keep up when dogs chew them up. Regards Helen and rick
