24.01.2022 It's a good time to wash and iron the baby's clothes ready for when we can return to onsite, hands-on training. In the meantime- we have been working hard behind the scenes to film video modules for parents and families of newborn babies. Details coming soon!
24.01.2022 Taking your newborn baby home is an exciting time, but many parents feel daunted by the responsibility that comes with caring for a newborn. Recognising signs of serious illness and knowing when and where to seek help is essential knowledge for all parents and grandparents. Would you know what to do in an emergency? We can provide you with the knowledge and skills to deal with an emergency in the first year of your babys life with confidence. Our programs are designed to cover the basics of baby safety, without being too technical or too overwhelming. All our programs are evidence-based and delivered by our Director, Dr Rosemarie Boland, who has more than 30 years experience as a newborn educator, neonatal nurse, midwife, researcher and author. Details of our programs are available at https://www.preciouscare.com.au
23.01.2022 Important advice on the risks of co-sleeping (in the parents bed, or on a couch) and Sudden and Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI). Never co-sleep with your baby if youre under the influence of drugs (including strong pain killers) or alcohol. A lethal mix. https://twitter.com/lullabytrust/status/1281513621839912961
22.01.2022 Life’s Little treasures indeed! My team were so proud to Walk for Prems yesterday and to raise money for Life's Little Treasures Foundation. None of my team were this cute!
22.01.2022 There is no greater privilege or pleasure than seeing little preterm babies grow into healthy, happy, energetic children. I trained as a midwife more than 30 ye...ars ago, before training as a neonatal nurse. It has been, and continues to be, the most rewarding career. This beautiful boy and his twin brother, are now gorgeous 8 year olds. I treasure my memories of all the babies I’ve cared for over many years. Happy International Day of the Midwife, to all my midwifery colleagues throughout the world. Today we honor the incredible work of the profession in caring for mothers and their precious babies. #internationaldayofthemidwife Life's Little Treasures Foundation Miracle Babies Foundation

20.01.2022 For the past year, Ive been working with a fabulous team of clinicians and a mum of a baby born at 25 weeks to develop the first ever guidance for Victorian clinicians and parents for the management of extremely preterm births at 22-25 weeks. Please review our draft guidance and give us your feedback- its so important we get this right. Our feedback survey is open for 4 weeks. Parents, clinicians, researchers and consumers are all invited to provide us with feedback on our draft guidance.
19.01.2022 Would you know what to do if your baby was choking? In our Baby Basic Life Support Class, we can teach you how to manage a baby who is choking- and it is NOT with the Heimlich manoeuvre! Babies have a narrow entrance to their windpipe (airway), which makes it easy for a small object to become caught in their airway. Babies also dont get their rear molar teeth (which we use for chewing) until 12-18 months of age, so they are not able to chew food effectively. And of course, babies and toddlers put everything into their mouth. All of these objects pose a choking hazard for a baby.
18.01.2022 Celebrating this special day with my midwifery colleagues around the world, working in clinical care, education and research. Happy International Midwives Day!

With so many of us now spending the majority of our time at home, this is a great opportunity for parents and carers to get down on the floor with baby and start building those little muscles. 18.01.2022 It was an strange Mothers Day today- not the day I expected or planed for. But being able to provide a Baby Basic Life Support online with parents today, including parents whose baby had just been discharged from the SCN at Frances Perry House gave me a lovely sense of connection with each of those mothers and their partners. So it was happy Mothers day all in all.
18.01.2022 Safe Sleeping - Thursday 29 April at 6:45pm A class for expectant parents, and parents, grandparents and other family members of newborn babies. This is a face-...to-face class, being held in Windsor, Melbourne in a small group format (limited to 6 couples). Safe Sleep practices have been proven to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS. Over the past decade, a number of changes have been made to the safe sleep guidelines both here in Australia and internationally. Are you up to date with these important changes? Many baby products sold in retail stores have not been tested for safety for babies and many do not meet any Australian standard for safety, (including bassinettes). Products such as nests, pods, cocoons and positioning pods are not safe for babies to sleep in, and pose a risk for SUDI. In this 2-hour, small group class, we can teach you the latest evidence-based recommendations for safe sleep for babies from birth right up to 12 months of age. We will teach you which products are safe for babies and which products/practices increase the risk of SUDI. The class also provides an opportunity to practice safe swaddling (wrapping) with a focus on promoting normal hip development. All participants receive access to our Safe Sleeping video series, which includes how to wrap a baby and use of a safe sleeping bag. Positions are strictly limited to 6 couples. Cost: $75 per person. For more information and to book, go to: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/baby-safe-class-safe-sleepi Or see our website at https://www.preciouscare.com.au//small-group-face-to-face- #safesleeping #SUDI #SIDS #Safesleep #newborn #baby #newbornbaby #childbirtheducation #childbirthclass #pregnancy #babysafety

14.01.2022 It’s not too late to sponsor me to Walk for Prems tomorrow. Funds raised go toward providing parents with babies in NICU with practical support like petrol vouchers, car parking vouchers, breakfast, support group morning teas. Even $5 for my $5km will help me meet my fundraising target. Thank you!

13.01.2022 Just because parents expecting a baby, or taking their baby home from SCN/NICU need to isolate at home at the moment, they do not need to feel isolated from access to high quality, evidence-based knowledge and skills to care for their baby. The Baby Safe Program is now online! https://www.preciouscare.com.au/tr/baby-first-aid-training/
12.01.2022 Great to see the WOGS team practising delayed/deferred cord clamping in healthy babies. Its been recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council and ILCOR since Jan 2016, even for preterm babies who are born vigorous and dont need help with their breathing. I remember the early studies we did in 2015 to see if it was feasible for babies born by c/section. Kudos to the WOGS group for making DCC a standard of (excellent) care!
12.01.2022 Our very first Baby Safe Program at Frances Perry House was nearly 3 years ago. Since then, more than 2500 parents and grandparents have attended the program run by Dr Rosemarie Boland.

10.01.2022 Is it more important that ever to keep your babys immunisations up-to-date. As we head into winter, we dont want to see babies at risk of the influenza virus and other serious illness because they were not vaccinated. Vaccinations save little lives.
09.01.2022 WOW. As of last weekend, 350 parents and grandparents have attended the Baby Safe Program online- mostly from Frances Perry House and The Royal Womens Hospital. We have only been online for 4 weeks, but adding more classes so no-one misses out. Parents preparing to take a baby home from the SCN/NICU our top priority- but there is room for everyone! Isolation at home does not mean isolation from essential parenting education. Contact me at www.preciouscare.com.au for bookings.

03.01.2022 We are not aware of any advice for babies to wear masks, whether they are infected or not. There is a potential risk of suffocation and other hazards with doing... this. The latest Government guidance says that Children under 2 years do not need to wear masks. Read more at gov.uk//n/public-advised-to-cover-faces-in-enclosed-spaces
