20.01.2022 For years (as in 20+) I had undiagnosed anxiety. I used to have panic attacks at night when I was eight. My body once froze up on me at a school relay race that I had been winning. I would literally seize up as stress chemicals flooded through my body. A lot of people find it hard to believe that about me. I get on with anyone and everyone, love having a laugh, chat randomly to strangers at the supermarket. It was initially hard to talk... about it, to admit it. It felt like failure, admitting a dirty secret and an unimaginable release of control. Thanks to movements like #ruokday Im strangely proud of it now, its a kind of superpower. By acknowledging it, learning coping mechanisms and how to recognise the signs, I have taken the control back. Until bloody Covid-19. The racing heart, the constricted chest, the exhaustion all came flooding back. And I figure a lot of people are feeling the same right now. So here are some of my most effective coping mechanisms: Learn where you feel your anxiety, mine is at the top of my chest When you recognise the sign, act. Remove yourself from the situation immediately. Leave the room, go outside, lie down, make a cup of tea. Just stop. Fighting it or pushing through only makes it worse. Breathe. 2-4-6 breathing is my favourite. In through your nose for 2, hold it for 4, then breathe out through your mouth for 6, like you are blowing bubbles through a straw. This step kills me but god it works. Cut caffeine, sugar and alcohol. If the feeling continues, get a mental health plan and find a psychologist you connect with.
