23.01.2022 CREATION: ALEXANDRA DILLON instagram: @alexandradillonartist facebook: @alexandradillonart... Alexandra Dillon is a Los Angeles-based surrealist painter who creates art from found objects. "Alexandra Dillon is inspired by paintings of Roman-Egyptian mummies, baroque portraits to contemplate the crossroads of character, psychology and female personality. Dillon paints imaginary portraits on brushes from salvage tools of his Art. These small paintings (the size and shape of which are reminiscent of hand mirrors) reflect unique personalities: "My characters come to me as novelists do." she notices. "They introduce themselves and tell me who they are." Most of these portraits are of women. They engage the viewer with their penetrating gazes and question the notion of self-effacement as feminine protocol. They are quite feminine (or sometimes masculine) but with a radiant expression. Exploring the connection between clothing and the wearer, Dillon reverses the relationship by painting portraits of women on the dresses themselves. In one series, these ladies are pictured as extras of the extravagant Old Hollywood sets, representing the never-made ones who could only wear the costume briefly, fulfilling an unbearable fantasy of being a queen for a day. Clothing becomes a metaphor for expression and disguise, power and vulnerability. Faces, or pieces of faces, painted on old tools, such as axes, cleavers and locks create juxtapositions that illicitly create new readings of femininity. A woman's eyes, painted on an old ax, or a sweet baroque face on a saw blade, forces us to question our expectations of what a pretty face represents. Alexandra Dillon also reflects on the inner realms of personal psychologies. A single eye, classically painted in oils, glances at an old padlock, observing the key on which it relies but still remaining out of reach. A cleaver, painted with a screaming face, appears both terrifying and terrified of its own action. A native of Los Angeles, Alexandra Dillon studying classical realism in Florence (Ita) His portraits have gone viral on Instagram and the web, earning him an international reputation for surrealism and inventive work on salvaged objects.
