24.01.2022 In its heyday as a working flour mill, the Premier Mill was a rich tapestry of sight, smells and sounds. White flour dust filled the air, men with empty flour bags fashioned into head-wear hoisted full flour bags onto broad shoulders, and the shrill of the Mill Whistle marked the order of the day. With a refurbished whistle now in operation at the hotel, we spoke to some of those who remember what the original whistle meant to them and the town. There were shared memories, fo...nd recollections and also some well-mannered disagreements. If you have a memory of the whistle you’d care to share, comment below, send us a private message or leave your name in the comments and we’ll get in touch. For your chance to be a Whistle-Blower, just be in the café at 12 noon or 6pm and we just might pick you to sound the whistle that day. #katanning #premiermillhotel #greatsouthern #thegreatsouthern #waheritage #heritagehotel #justanotherdayinwa #thisiswa #roadtripsouth #roadtripwa #westernaustraliauncovered #australiasgoldenoutback #goldenoutback #downsouth #australiassw #mustdowa #destinationwa #amazingwa #heritagerhotel

24.01.2022 Even if you missed out on weekend's CWA Feast (now sold out) why not come and stay with us over the Easter and Anzac extended holidays?. We've still got a few rooms left at the inn on a few days of the days over the break. This is a glorious time of the year to head to the Stirlings and climb the famous Bluff Knoll. There's also a whole series of self-drive day trips we've curated for our guests which are well off the usual beaten tracks. Or... if you're just in that "I need to do absolutely nothing for a while and curl up with a book and just chill" kind of mood then the Premier Mill Hotel is the place for you.

23.01.2022 We’ve had many chats with many Katanning locals over the past few years, and as you’d expect, there’s a wealth of knowledge, warmth and experience that you can’t find in history books or records. We’ve started to invite some of our friends to chat with us on-camera, and already the results are insightful. To begin the journey, here’s a quick insight into the value of the Premier Mill to Katanning from Ainslie Evans, Eric McFarland, Alan Thomas and Arthur Todd.... #premiermillhotel #realplace #greatsouthern #thegreatsouthern #waheritage #heritagehotel #justanotherdayinwa #thisiswa #roadtripsouth #roadtripwa #westernaustraliauncovered Lost Katanning Shire of Katanning ABC Great Southern

22.01.2022 When AC/DC appeared at the Katanning Town Hall on September 23 1975, their Tuesday night set list began with 'Live Wire', included 'High Voltage' and ended with 'TNT'. At the end of this month when YUCK Circus hit the stage as part of Fringe World Festival's OUTER FRINGE, we're expecting much of the same - high voltage, high energy, high impact! Our Fringe Shows sold out last year, so grab your tickets now at http://bit.ly/2rcQIIL... 22.01.2022 The immersive tranquility of residing in a flour mill from the 1800's and the natural beauty of the stunning Great Southern region often quite overwhelms our guests. So we’re used to hearing "we really wish we could spend more time here". Our suggestion is that even before you arrive, you plan to stay a little longer adjust your pace to match ours, and truly experience the region. Being no further from Perth than most of our weekend coastal destinations there really isn’t the... hurry to get home on Sunday. In fact, we’ve now found a way to reward you for spending your whole weekend with us. Whether it’s a relaxing country drive on Monday morning to still get you back in time for a day in the office... or you’re just going treat yourself to a well-deserved mini-break, our new ‘Stay Longer’ package is just for you. For a limited time, book any two night consecutive stay in any room category including a Sunday and your stay on the Sunday night with our pleasure, will be at half price. https://www.premiermillhotel.com/packages

19.01.2022 A chance meeting between two pairs of travellers led to some inside knowledge and a change of route for David and his wife. We gleaned a lot from the couple as it was obvious that in particular, they knew a lot about the Katanning region, its environs and the many highways and avenues from Perth to the southern Wheat and Wine Regions. 17.01.2022 From the early 1900s Katanning has been visited by a vast array of touring performers. This month’s ‘Outer Fringe’ performances may have less gospel-preaching than the Salvation Army Biorama Company’s visit of 1900, and less horses than when Hyland’s Circus came to town in 1907 but they won’t be any less engaging or entertaining! Outer Fringe features Circus, Comedy, Music, Magic and more, with both an Adult's Variety Gala and a Kid's Circus Spectacular. 17.01.2022 Less than a quarter of a century after Frederick Piesse built the Premier Flour Mill, he repurposed its beating-basement-heart of cogs, pulleys and drives to house his expanding wine, aerated waters and cordials business. This was the first such repurposing, but not the last. Fast forward to 2016 and the Mill building was unfortunately in a state of complete disrepair. Together with a like-minded team, it was then that we embarked upon the Mill’s most significant and consumin...g repurposing. Working with a shared vision, spaceagency: architects were as passionate as we were in creating a hotel that would be a true testament to the previous life of the building, and one which was respectful to its history and its town. Briefed to resurrect and transform an important remnant of Katanning’s agricultural/industrial past, and to position it as a hotel that celebrates and advances tourism in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, spaceagency: architects has redefined the meaning of a heritage project ...This is a master achievement, born of intelligence and attention. 12.01.2022 We put together the ‘Little Black Box’ of booklets in each hotel room to help guide our guests' journeys, so we’re always thrilled when we hear the travels they inspire. Another book of great value is on the different trips one can take in the Southern region. We did a day trip down to Albany where we went to the Albany War Memorial which is truly worth a visit. We loved the interactive experience which really personalised what the men went through. On the return trip to Kat...anning we went the eastern route past Bluff Knoll and the ranges. As a result we both saw countryside we had not previously seen. 10.01.2022 Meet Plantagenet Wines' chief winemaker Luke Eckersley for an evening of wine tasting, with canapes by executive chef Owen Parsons. 07.01.2022 We quite often marvel at the ingenuity and forward-thinking attitude of our Founder F.H. Piesse. In 1891, the year before Perth’s first electric street light was erected at the corner of Lord and Wellington street, Piesse had his brand new mill lit by incandescent bulbs. Just over a decade later, creating more power than it could use, the Mill became the sole supplier of electricity to the entire town and it wasn’t until 1961 that Katanning’s power supply was taken over by... the SEC. #katanning #premiermillhotel #greatsouthern #thegreatsouthern #waheritage #heritagehotel #justanotherdayinwa #thisiswa

07.01.2022 On April 25th in 1891 Joseph John Talbot Hobbs was a young ambitious architect. Aged 27 he had made the permanent move from London only 5 years prior and established one of the colony's most highly regarded architectural practices. On this day in 1891 he would have been looking forward to the opening in only a few days of the Premier Roller Flour Mill in Katanning - a building he had designed for his esteemed client and dear friend, Mr F.H Piesse. The Swan Brewery, Newspaper ...House, The Windsor Hotel, The Weld Club and The Savoy all followed as a string of successful commissions. After the mill's opening in Katanning Talbot Hobbs enlisted as a reservist in the volunteer artillery as a gunner. He had little idea that 20 years later on this very same day he would, acting on ill-fated orders, lead the 1st Division of the Australian Imperial Force to a landing at Gallipolli. Surviving this horror, it was then Talbot Hobbs 3 years later, who was credited with being responsible for the recapture of Villers-Bretonneux. After the war, back in Western Australia, he resumed his life as a successful architect with his design of the War Memorial in Kings Park being a most fitting commission. Some years later in 1938 he would die of a heart attack, at sea whilst en-route to the unveiling of the memorial at Villers-Bretonneux. As we now enjoy every day that we spend in JJ Talbot Hobb's Premier Roller Flour Mill here in Katanning.... Lest We Forget. We will remember them.
