25.01.2022 Did you know that a normal umbilical cord contains 3 vessels? There are two arteries and one vein (see the vein on top and the arteries on the bottom of the photo, taken from a placenta this evening). A lot of people think it’s basically just a tube of sorts transporting nutrients to their baby. But...it’s so much more intricately designed than that! The vein carries oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood to your baby, and the arteries carry the deoxygenated blood, waste pro...ducts (such as carbon dioxide), and nutrient-depleted blood through the placenta and into your bloodstream to dispose of. After delivery, these vessels close by themselves. The arteries close first due to their muscular walls. The umbilical vein follows closely behind, allowing oxygenated blood to return to your baby from the placenta. At birth, the placenta contains 1/3 of your baby’s blood volume. By delaying cord clamping for several minutes, you are allowing that blood to be transferred to your baby where it belongs via the umbilical vein. I absolutely love inspecting the vessels in the cords (and throughout the entire placenta, really), as my awe never ceases over how our bodies are so intricately woven and knit together in the womb. And I love to share my excitement over what others might consider gross Maybe I’m weird. But that’s okay (Edit: Many have pointed out that I have the circulation listed incorrectly. This is not the case for umbilical cord anatomy. 23.01.2022 Breastfeeding and pumping Mummas of Perth the babies in KEMH NICU need your help. The PREM Milk Bank is running low on donor milk. As a result some early bird...s who are making good progress may need to be supplemented with formula instead of donor milk. Can you help? Tag a friend who is breastfeeding or pumping Sharing from @big_little_twins with permission. Day 51 - Milk Milk Milk Breast milk contains all the nutrients and antibodies we need to grow big and strong! Mum is trying her hardest to produce enough milk for the 2 of us, but is unfortunatly falling short... this picture shows how she clearly has one dud boob "lazy lefty" she calls it. Back it her youth she thought it was a fantastic idea to have her nipple pierced.... turns out it wasn't. It is perfectly normal to have one boob that is "the producer" and one "dud". We have been lucky enough that when we run out of mum's milk we have been topped up with donor milk, that's right just like blood donors there are milk donors who save babies like us who so desperately require milk. The problem is there is a donor milk shortage here in Western Australia so we may not receive this liquid gold for much longer, we have our fingers and toes crossed that more milk is donated not only for us but for all the other desperate babies in the NICU.

16.01.2022 TIME: We are all so busy. Too busy to do a CPR class? I do home visits. You would spend the rest of your life regretting not having the time if you panicked and were unable to save your childs life!

13.01.2022 Do you need support and reassurance?

12.01.2022 Don’t leave your child to sleep in a car seat

07.01.2022 TO BE A NICU NURSE MEANS... To see the overwhelming look of pure joy and sheer terror on a new father’s face, as he lays eyes on his tiny, fragile daughter for ...the very first time. To hear the sweet sound of a faint heartbeat, as the respiratory therapist puffs air into the small, underdeveloped lungs of a micro-preemie during a long and exhausting code in the operating room. To feel the raw and intense pain in the cry of a mother saying goodbye to her son, as he is placed on her chest to take his first and very last breaths. To notice the uncertainty in the eyes of a grandfather, as he sits silently by his grandson’s incubator, searching for answers and seeking reassurance, comfort, and hope. To respect the mother whose personal choices are far from perfect, and to simply care for her and her baby regardless of her decisions and walk in life. To guide her without bitterness, resentment, or judgment. To console the frantic cry of a baby boy, as he painfully withdrawals from the narcotics he was exposed to and became dependent upon for the nine months prior to his entrance into this world. To support the grieving father, as he makes the unimaginable decision to discontinue life support and let his tiny baby girl go, only after just witnessing the tragic, heart-wrenching death of his wife just hours before. To protect the premature baby’s need for sleep, as he recovers from a long and difficult night. To be brave enough to speak up for the sake of patient advocacy and to always be the voice for those who have no voice. To encourage the new and frightened mother, as she changes her tiny infant's diaper for the very first time, despite all her fears and uncertainty. To celebrate the baby that finishes her first bottle, gains just one ounce, or makes it through an entire shift without a single "episode", as these little victories are huge accomplishments for this once small but growing preemie. To understand the importance of sharing real human moments and quiet connections with babies. Some as simple as comforting their cries or tucking them safely into their little nests to sleep and to grow. To cherish a job that at times, can be less than ideal. To work long and sometimes difficult shifts with no lunch or bathroom breaks. To love beyond the walls, to cry behind closed doors, and to rise above the unpredictable moments to create lasting and meaningful memories. To believe. To breathe. And to find the courage and strength to do it all again, Tomorrow. #neonatalnursesday Original post can be found here: http://www.peekabooicu.com//a-glimpse-into-the-life-and-l/

04.01.2022 Nature is beautiful

02.01.2022 I am getting clients who want a quick fix to help their baby/ toddler to sleep at night. The first thing I do on my home visit, is ask about the day routine. Not all, but many have the TV on during the day for entertainment. Some even have their night feed in front of the Tv. Over stimulated babies will not sleep! Let’s get back to basics and start thinking about what is good for your baby.
