23.01.2022 Early Literacy Milestones! These skills are the building blocks for getting a child ready to read. Most kids will learn to read in kindergarten, but they are developing the skills needed for reading from a very young age! Reading requires a combination of skill proficiency in print knowledge, oral langauge, and phonological awareness. ... Print knowledge starts with identifying and recognizing text and grows to identifying letters and understanding that they represent sounds. Oral language consists of building vocabulary and understanding the meaning of the text. Phonological awareness is the ability to think about the sounds that make up a word. This starts with rhyming skills and segmenting words by syllables and culminates in a child's ability to sound out words and blend those sounds together to read words! How do you like to work on these skills? #earlyliteracymilestones #earlyliteracy #emergentliteracy #readytoread #raisingreaders #languagedevelopment #phonologicalawareness #earlyintervention #eislp #childdevelopment #parentingtips #slp2b #slpblogger #slpsofinstagram Sources: East Moline, IL: LinguiSystems. 22.01.2022 We would like to present to you our very own SPECTACULAR Howlong Preschool Indigenous Shirt. The artwork that we have used on these was designed and created JUST FOR US by Uncle David Dunn David Dunn - Done by Dunn Art We commissioned him to create a unique piece of artwork and we requested in our brief to him that it represent our preschool using the following themes: children, learning, belonging, being, becoming, Murray River and brolgas. Uncle David has absolutely naile...d what we wanted. We have used elements from the original artwork to create our shirts. The name 'Howlong' or 'Oolong', a Bangerang or Wiradjuri Aboriginal word, was first applied to a local property in the early 1840s by Isaac Rudd, an early settler. It is believed to mean either 'beginning of the plains' or 'the place of brolgas'. We have these shirts available in children's sizes. If you would like to buy one please see staff for price. * Thank you to T-Shirt World Albury for assisting us with process of creating these.

19.01.2022 The early childhood industry is not for everyone. It takes a special someone to take on the role of 'nurturer' for our future generations. A love and passion that is beyond measure. A calmness and patience that is soothing whilst inspiring. A heart and desire that is like no other.... The role of an early childhood educator is a lifelong journey. You are always growing, always evolving, no two days are ever the same. You are never at the finish line. You are always striving for more and more. You learn and you grow. You educate and inspire. You touch the lives of so many, you are an integral part of the foundational development that inspires a future of lifelong learning in our littlest humans. You are one in a million. You are priceless. Thank you for everything that you do

16.01.2022 Putting children first. National Child Protection Week (6-12 September 2020) is an annual Australia-wide campaign to raise awareness of child abuse prevention, raise the profile of all issues connected with child protection, and amplify the message that protecting children from abuse is everyones responsibility. Launched 30 years ago by the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN), this years theme is Putting children first inviting all of ...us to look at how we can prioritise children in our lives and communities as individuals, and as part of families, organisations, communities and society. Its also a timely reminder to have age appropriate conversations with children in your care about personal safety and what to do if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. With 40 years of putting children first, Howlong Preschool supports the importance of this campaign. For more information about National Child Protection Week, visit: https://www.napcan.org.au/national-child-protection-week/

12.01.2022 We're delighted to be giving you the chance to take part in an Australian childhood tradition. Pictureplates turn your child's art into useful objects that look fantastic and last for years. They're fun to make, fun to use, and tough enough to last thousands of washes without cracking or fading. You and your children can choose to create a range of products, including plates (made of food-safe, dishwasher safe melamine), Calendars, Clocks, Phone Cases and more.... We have a sample to display and the quality is fantastic- bright, glossy + tough. Even better, all the products are made in Australia. Your children will create their pictures at home. They can use paint, pens, photos- the brighter the better. If you would like to participate, please call the preschool on 0260265646 to collect the drawing paper. Orders and drawings will need to be returned to the preschool by 18th September 2020. Please feel free to share with anyone, or tag someone who may like to order these magnificent products.

10.01.2022 Free Webinar- Dr Justin Coulson https://facebook.com/events/s/little-people-big-feelings-fre/315567756260560/?ti=cl HOW TO MANAGE MELTDOWNS, TAME TANTRUMS, AND RAISE AN EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT CHILD... What are we supposed to do when our child is having a tantrum? Losing the plot? Going off their rocker? Most of our responses no matter how well-intended can make things worse. We tell them to stop it, calm down, cut it out and they dont! They get worse! We send them to their room, take the iPad it all backfires. Dealing with little peoples big emotions (and challenging behaviours) in the middle of an outburst is tough! The tricky thing is that much of our childrens challenging behaviour (and our feeling that they are not resilient) has less to do with the behaviour were seeing, and more to do with the big emotions theyre feeling that were not quite sure what to do with. Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child is Dr Justin Coulsons powerful guide to teaching children to understand and regulate their emotional world. Once they develop competence with this critical life skill, emotionally intelligent children will feel more confident, perform better at school, have healthier relationships with others, and even be physically healthier. This presentation equips parents with a five-step emotion coaching process that brings together the very best in emotional intelligence research from Dr John Gottman, the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence, and others to build childrens resilience, increase wellbeing for the whole family, and develop healthier humans.

Also to the Howlong Men's Shed that made one of the Mailboxes for us and others within the community to use. The excitement on the children's faces when they receive their letter back from Santa is just priceless.
