23.01.2022 Are you an introvert or an extrovert? And what does that mean for you when you're speaking? Thomas and I identify as an introvert and extrovert respectively so in this episode we have a discussion about the considerations that we need to make for ourselves, and working with others who sit somewhere vastly different on the intro/extrovert scale.

23.01.2022 We were SO EXCITED to interview one of our biggest wish-list guests, Grant Baldwin, for our podcast. It was 1am for us but we had to make it happen. Grant is the founder of The Speaker Lab, a training company that helps public speakers learn how to find and book speaking gigs. Here’s just some of what you’ll learn:... How to know if what you want to speak about is of value The one thing everyone can do to become a better speaker How to know if you’re ready to speak Grant's thoughts on the timeless question: what’s more important, delivery or content? The best advice for anyone getting started in the speaking aspect of their career Link to the episode is in the comments

22.01.2022 We’re jumping aboard the bandwagon of the recently trending Bill Gates talk all about pandemics and what the world future of them may look like. The kicker? The talk is from 2015 and feels like a prophecy come true in the 2020 corona-crisis. It has a huge amount of impact for an 8-minute presentation. Thomas had seen it before so got to sit back and watch Kate well up with the same excitement he had once felt. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN... The careful considerations for breaking a massive topic into just enough information Ensuring your audience is not distracted by your props How effective data visualisation can improve the impact of complex information How to end your presentation by referring back to the opening. Link to listen is in the comments, or just search for Presentation Boss on your podcast player.

22.01.2022 I have been asked a few times what's involved with getting started making a podcast. And my answer is "content". All the technical stuff like which microphone to use, software to edit with, where to host is simple and easy.... But consistently recording quality, valuable content is where most of your thought needs to go. Plus a little bit of time set aside to edit. Here is what the final edit of this weeks episode of our podcast looks like. It took me some time to get my head around Audacity, but now I look at this view as a thing of beauty. Here is what it looks like to have an edited episode of The Presentation Boss Podcast. This one is a speech breakdown, where we listen to a speech and pause it along the way to make comment and extract what we can learn from the presentation. #Audacity #ThePresentationBossPodcast #SpeechBreakdown ~ Thomas

21.01.2022 Ellen is one of the most high-profile celebrities in the world, and today we break down a commencement speech she made in 2009. In classic Ellen style she's hilarious, she dances, and she tells an incredibly captivating story of her life. And like all of these types of speeches, she leaves the crowd with a beautiful, poignant message of hope and inspiration.... We had a stack of fun with this speech; listen in to hear what makes it so effective, and why we end up giggling about boobies. #PresentationBossPodcast #PresentationBoss #PresentationSkills #EllenDegeneres #Commencement

20.01.2022 We invited MY first speaking coaching onto the podcast to talk about his work in defusing hostile situations but I couldn't help asking about myself... and got an answer that was...well, real. Gerald Pauschmann - aka G-Mann has always pushed my thinking, from the first workshop I did with him over 15 years ago, and every time that I still call him for advice, and this interview was no exception. ~Kate... #presentationbosspodcast #presentationskills #confidence #publicspeaking #hostilesituations

20.01.2022 This is one of my favourite TED Talks. In my Top 3, I reckon. I love how Jane has put it together, but I love the messaging in the talk so much. It's so worth listening to as its own speech. This is a great example of a TED Talk that ticks all the boxes - unique to the presenter, easy to follow and absorb, and most importantly, an idea worth sharing! ~Kate... JANE: But if you focus on the technical aspects and use those practical skills that you already have, you can build a framework and that serves as a base then for your creative ideas to build on. So how do we build a framework? There are three things that really worked well for me, and they are motivation, time management and mastering the technical ability. And hopefully they all sound somewhat familiar to you already. THOMAS: The thing I love right here, it was signposting. That's the technique where you say 'I'm going to talk about three things today, they are one, two, three' and she just mentioned them. So we have a little bit of a framework around what it is she's going to say and what these three things are going to be. It gives us a bit of a map in our mind, moving forward. #presentationbosspodcast #communicationskills #speechbreakdown #presentationskills

19.01.2022 What’s the best tip you have to become a better speaker? Our answer isn’t exactly the short-cut from average to awesome speaking that people are looking for. The best thing a speaker can do is rehearse their presentations. And we sometimes get push back that ‘rehearsal doesn’t work for me’. What You'll Learn... Exactly how rehearsal will make your life easier. Why rehearsal is NOT the opposite of authentic The reason why some people feel rehearsal doesn't work for them #presentationskills #presentationbosspodcast #rehearsal #publicspeaking

19.01.2022 This week on the pod we answered listener-submitted questions - which included our relationship status! We did get more serious, but first addressed the important issues, like Thomas' Tinder profile! Sometimes you just gotta help a friend out!

19.01.2022 It's an easy trap to think that fancy software is going to automatically present your data well! This week on the #PresentationBossPodcast we talk #DataVisualisation and about how to start thinking about what chart to use to present your data and not just rely on your software. It's a light yet valuable conversation about how to present your insights for maximum comprehension.... #PresentationSkills #DataPresentation #CommunicationSkills

17.01.2022 A World Champion of Public Speaking. Just one winner from 33,000 entrants worldwide On this weeks episode of The Presentation Boss Podcast, we take a close look at the 2019 winner of this contest. It's a short, 7 minute speech that leans heavily on storytelling and humour and we both thoroughly enjoyed Aaron Beverly. What You'll Learn This Week:... The differences between commercial speaking and contest speaking. How and where to start a story when used in a speech. One of the big indicators that an audience has enjoyed a presentation. Links in the comments for where you can listen in!

17.01.2022 Every podcast has "dream guests" and today the PB podcast interviewed one of ours!! Matthew Dicks literally wrote the book on storytelling and is a huge inspiration to us both. We loved talking to him about how to tell great stories that help you connect with others. Funny, intelligent and honest, he was so generous with his time and knowledge and absolutely did not disappoint.... #storytelling #leadership #connection

17.01.2022 Zig Ziglar was one of the original big-name motivational speakers. So how does he stack up in 2019? On today's episode we breakdown some of the genius that is Zig Ziglar and cringe at some of the bits that were probably groundbreaking in the 80s and 90s when he was at the top of the speaking game. We are often told that Speech Breakdowns are a favourite format for many listeners, so let us know if you love them too!

17.01.2022 We’ve been following Andrew Tarvin's work for years and love love loved that he joined us on the podcast to talk about adding humour into presentations in a professional setting. Whether humour and seriousness are mutually exclusive The difference between effective and efficient, and which is better for communication Exactly where to start with adding humour into your presentations #presentationbosspodcast #humour #presentationskills

15.01.2022 "The question was "what is the one thing that separates a bad talk from a good talk" and our answer was that a good talk has an audience focus and a clear message. What we thought we'd do today is actually expand on that and work out how do you actually have an audience focus and how do you make sure that your message is clear? How do you know who you're speaking to, and how do you refine that message." Listen in to today's episode for answers to these questions!... #presentationbosspodcast #communicationskills #presentationskills #audiencefocus

15.01.2022 Do you LOVE your voice? If not, would you like to know how to improve it? If you answered yes, this is the episode for you! A few years ago we were at an event where Elisa James was presenting on using your voice correctly. Both of us still use the breathing techniques she taught us and were so excited when she agreed to come on our pod and share some of her knowledge.... And unsurprisingly, her voice is wonderful to listen to!

14.01.2022 We’ve been presenting online for years, so we decided to share what we know about staying in control of online meetings. With remote staff, it’s important to stay in touch and maintain as much normalcy as possible. Today we cover 6 key topics that you can implement immediately for effective online meetings. Just Some Of What We Cover... Setting up your environment for success and authority Voice and body language considerations through a webcam Injecting interaction into your meetings for increased engagement and attention #presentationbosspodcast #onlinemeetings #presentingonline #confidence #communicationskills

14.01.2022 @Jay Baer! He’s a huge name in the marketing industry and hosts one of our favourite podcasts (Standing Ovation). We were SO excited to have him join us on the #presentationbosspodcast to chat to us about differentiating yourself with talk triggers and also about storytelling. He brought so much fun & energy to our pod, and helped us name our audience #BOSSES... What You'll Learn Why the ability to present well is so important The importance of being known for one thing Why good stories aren’t necessarily big stories #publicspeaking #jaybaer #talktriggers

14.01.2022 Sick of PowerPoint altogether? Wondering what you can do instead of slides? Well then, this is the episode for you! If you want a visual aid that’s NOT a slide deck, we discuss the 5 alternative options with their pros/cons, and how to use them effectively. We talk about: Whiteboards (flexible and simple)... Flipcharts (can be prepared or spontaneous) Handouts (require preparation, but handy for the audience) Props (physical and tactile my personal preference) Nothing at all (the simplest option!) Do you have anything else that you use for your visuals that isn’t on this list? #presentationbosspodcast #visualaids #presentationskills #powerpoint #podcast

13.01.2022 2019 has been a huge year at Presentation Boss. We started a podcast, worked with some new and bigger clients and have doubled-down on our plans looking forward. Yesterday we took the time to grab lunch together, celebrate the year that was and discuss what we're looking at for 2020. Our goals are, of course, just a little bit daunting and a little bit scary, but that's what makes it exciting. We continue to finish this year strong but I am so unbelievably looking forward to ...the new year! Also, I think I preferred the Pad Thai over the Green Curry, but damn Kate always picks excellent food options! #PresentationBoss #LoveWhatYouDo #2019 #2020 #ThaiFood

13.01.2022 Podding from the other side! I was stoked to be a guest on one of our favourite podcasts, First Time Facilitator, with Leanne Hughes. We had a lot of fun recording and I can't wait for the episode to be released because we issue a challenge to listeners and I can't wait to hear how people go with it!!

12.01.2022 Building a new slide deck is one thing, but how do you take what you already have and make it better You might say, how do I... "Pimp My Slide"? Today Thomas walks us through the steps to take an existing deck that might be inflicting ‘Death by PowerPoint’ onto an audience, to something that looks classy, professional and snazzy!... #presentationbosspodcast #presentationskills #powerpoint #communicationskills #slide #pimpmyslide

11.01.2022 Already up to episode twenty! This week on The Presentation Boss Podcast we’re joined by Kelly McAuliffe, an ex-police officer to talk about how to have a conversation across the hierarchy of an organisation! Listen in for the careful words of wisdom from Kelly including: We’re all just real people trying to connect... We all need to communicate, but we all communicate differently The key is to provide a safe space and permission to speak freely

10.01.2022 In Speech Breakdowns we take a speech and well, break it down. #surprise Learn by example as we explore what makes a great speech. This one in particular took me by surprise; it’s a beautiful example of using metaphor to simplify and anchor a concept in the mind of your audience.... What You'll Learn Getting quickly to the valuable content of your presentation What to do when a distraction happens mid-presentation How to not overwhelm the audience with too much technical detail #presentationskills #presentationbosspodcast #speechbreakdown #malcolmgladwell

10.01.2022 Mel Kettle is a strategic communication expert. For over 25 years she has been obsessed with communication, connection and collaboration. We met Mel through the podcasting community, and this episode is a wonderful conversation about communicating, the importance of connecting with others, and the possibilities that present themselves when we show up as our true selves.

09.01.2022 Simon Sinek has the third most watched TED Talk of all time. On The Presentation Boss Podcast we break down one of his talks and discuss exactly why he is a world-reknowned speaker. There is lots to witness here in neat presentation skills including minimalism storytelling, controlled pacing and effective visual aids. But of course, there are a few moments that niggle us enough to make comment about what we can learn. Just some of what you'll hear about and learn from in thi...s show: The effectiveness of starting a presentation with the opening scene from a story How an unusually slow pace can enable so much more room for contrast Using physical props to build interest and anticipation Why thinking of a tree can help you to bring in supporting material The single most powerful imagery to put in your audience’s mind Anchoring abstract concepts to common thoughts and ideas. 06.01.2022 We need to put together our cover art for Wednesday's episode! Spoiler alert - we're breaking down Simon Sinek Which pic makes you more excited to listen to him - big gestures, or the classic Simon flipchart?

04.01.2022 We often find ourselves discussing what to wear when presenting and what considerations there are when choosing your outfit. It's important to find a balance between looking professional and also being comfortable to communicate. So, we reached out to a local style coach to see what extra insights there are that we’ve never considered before. Thanks Moana Robinson for joining us and chatting about all things style, colour and speaking!

04.01.2022 What is a live storytelling event? What does a great story need? Joshua Morotti talks to us about the art of Storytelling and answers these questions and more this week on the Presentation Boss Podcast.... #presentationskills #podcast #presentationbosspodcast #storytelling #lifeoutloudstorytelling

03.01.2022 Choosing a font should be like choosing an outfit to wear Think about what your clothes say about you: based on what you wear, people make assumptions about your style. There's an element of appropriateness to consider. Does your outfit say 'beach trip!' when it should say 'serious interview'? ... Typography often provides that first glance impression that people gauge and judge the rest of the presentation by. I guarantee you read the above in different tones! Does your font say 'kill you' when it should say 'kiss you'? Your font choices need to be purposeful and appropriate. Choosing fonts for PowerPoint design is an important step in the process and should be approached thoughtfully. Ask yourself the questions; What's the purpose of this presentation? and Does the tone of my font choice clash with that?

03.01.2022 A phrase I sometimes say to myself is channel your inner Neen, and it refers to the woman we interviewed for today’s episode. Neen James literally wrote the book on Attention how to get it, how to hold it and how to use it, and she is the epitome of confidence and energy. We loved speaking with her, she delivers amazing value and I know this is an episode I’m going to keep going back to, over and over. I hope you love it as much as we do.... ~Kate

03.01.2022 In this week's episode of The Presentation Boss Podcast, Kate and I do another speech breakdown. That is, we play a TED Talk and pause at noteworthy moments to comment on brilliant technique or to discuss elements that don't quite work. So, you get to hear an idea worth sharing, as well as our professional thoughts on the delivery of the talk.... In this show, we have an interesting conversation around if the message is clear and if the talk is too abrupt we’d love to hear your thoughts on this! There’s some great psychology around education in this talk, so it’s well worth listening to. And besides, I love the work of Derek Muller! So, let’s click play and break down another speech! #PresentationBossPodcast #Podcast #Breakdown #PresentationSkills #TEDTalk #Veritasium

02.01.2022 Sometimes what we discuss and record is the product of what we've been seeing again lately. This week we went through a list of the seven biggest presentation-killers we see time and time again. We have been thinking a bunch about what we often see done during presentations that really distracts, detracts or destructs the delivery of the message. And when giving a presentation, you really want to give yourself the best opportunity to communicate your message. Really, all o...f them are pretty easy to avoid. Plus, we had a bit of fun with this episode, lots of laughter and cutting straight to the point and tips of these seven things to not do when presenting Listen in for The Seven Things To Not Do (link in comments): Data dumping Being a narrator. Making your audience multitask. Being too cool for your own presentation. Lack of contrast. Being fancy with your slides. Going overtime. #ThePresentationBossPodcast #PresentationSkills #WhatNotToDo #Podcast #PowerPoint #AudienceFocus #Discussion
