24.01.2022 It is appalling that on October 16 every year we post the same thing but it is now 45 years today since our colleagues - Gary Cunningham, aged 27; Brian Peters,... 24; Malcolm Rennie, 29; Greg Shackleton, 29; Tony Stewart, 21- were murdered by Indonesian special forces in East Timor. Forty-five years without justice. What is a journalist's life worth? The Balibo Five are among nine Australian journalists murdered with impunity. A war crime was committed in 1975. The killers have been getting away with murder. It is never too late for justice. #pressfreedom #MEAAmedia #Balibo #endimpunity

22.01.2022 #BREAKING: After pressure from #MEAAMedia and advocates of #PressFreedom the Palaszczuk government has withdrawn the bill that would have jailed journalists for reporting on politicians being investigated for corruption. #RightToKnow

22.01.2022 #JulianAssange's extradition hearing is about to begin in London and it's important to remember the dramatic global implications to journalism, #pressfreedom, a...nd the legal precedent this will set if he is extradited to the US. If the US can use the Espionage Act to extradite journalists working on foreign soil with impunity this will surely have a chilling affect on journalism and those that seek to reveal war crimes and other state secrets. #MEAAMedia See more

21.01.2022 "The Morrison Government should use its close friendship with the US to push hard for the extradition proceeding to be dropped against Julian #Assange," says Ke...rry O'Brien. "The New York Times published the revelations with impunity. This govt should demand the same treatment for one of our own journalists." Powerful words about the Julian #Assange case from one of Australia's most respected journalists and a fellow #MEAAmedia member. #pressfreedom #journalismisnotacrime #righttoknow

19.01.2022 It’s disturbing that Australia can operate like a police state by criminalising journalism, raiding journalists in their homes and workplaces, and threatening t...hem with jail for their legitimate journalism that is clearly in the national interest. www.meaa.org//meaa-welcomes-dropping-of-raid-investigatio/ #MEAAmedia #PressFreedom See more

17.01.2022 The MEAA 2021 press freedom survey will close this Friday. Have your say at meaa.io/pressfreedom2021 The past 12 months have reinforced the importance of indepe...ndent and free media in providing accurate and factual information to the public. Yet in Australia, the ability of journalists continues to be undermined by government secrecy, the pursuit of whistleblowers and lack of access to information, the use of non-publication orders, threats of defamation actions, cost cutting and redundancies. MEAA is a leading campaigner for #PressFreedom, and now we want to hear from you about what you regard as the most important issues in our annual press freedom survey. The survey is open to people working in the media, including freelancers. It will only take a couple of minutes to complete and can be anonymous. Tell us your thoughts about press freedom in Australia - rank the issues, add your experiences, tell us what you want to see changed. #MEAAmedia

11.01.2022 This outrageous move by Victoria Police sets a dangerous precedent for #PressFreedom. At no point did they consult with the union.
