22.01.2022 Lunging... Why I love it. Lunging is so much more than just simply chasing your horse around in circles for what is perceived as exercise for fitness. Its also far from using equipment to force a horse into what many believe to be a correct frame. Training a horse to work and use himself correctly will in turn produce a horse who is balanced, strong, flexible and able to work and hold himself correctly. A horse who has been correctly trained to lunge is able to be worked i...n any environment not just a round yard. I personally only lunge my horses in open spaces and love the freedom it gives me to move the horse as needed without any restrictions. The biggest thing when starting to lunge is to have someone who is experienced on hand to talk you through it. Lunging can become dangerous to yourself and your horse if you are inexperienced. No one however is too young to learn to lunge and its something I myself teach my children and foals. Its fantastic for establishing voice commands and the ever important forward and stop gears. Lunging doesnt need to be a long session nor always at high intensity. Short simple regular sessions is best with anything new and increase with understanding and when physically prepared. Lunging is a great tool to regularly asses where your horse is at both mentally and physically and easily asses if there is any soundness issues starting to arise. There are many different exercises in which you can lunge your horse to keep it interesting and work the muscular, skeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Flexion and bending is a great exercise to do on the lunge and one I do regularly. What is the difference between flexion and bending? For one you can flex your horse without bending but it is not possible to bend without flexion. Flexion is solely performed from the atlas joint, where the head and neck join. Bending of a horse is achieved through the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions, (neck, back and pelvis) bending around the inside leg and following the line of the circle. Poles! I love poles and doing them on the lunge is just another fantastic way to utilise this fantastic exercise. You can see the lift you get through the back and the engagement of the core muscles. This again is fantastic for young horses particularly before being backed as it helps them really strengthen the muscles needed to carry the riders weight. Overall these are only 2 of the exercises I use when lunging but the list of what you can do is vast. Introduce some lunging into your routine and see for yourself the benefits! Below is a picture of a mare I worked and the difference in just 10 days. Only a hand full of small sessions and she improved greatly.

16.01.2022 Happy 4th birthday to this spaz! Joey is our home bred Trakehener X Thoroughbred who is starting his journey under saddle with future plans to go eventing and ShowJumping. Sharon Bromley, Helen Elizabeth really happy with the results of this cross

16.01.2022 Finally had the time to clip Joey and and put his awesome new rug on that I won for the Horseland online clipping competition! This rug is the weatherbeeta comfitec premier trio. It has a snuggy polar fleece neck joined to the detachable neck plus comes with a 200g liner that can be attached for those extra cold nights. I also won a therma-tec rug which I cant wait to try out on Joey with him finally sound again to continue his under saddle education. ... I was also very lucky to win a pair of Wahl clippers! Now I already knew these clippers were fantastic as they are what I used to clip the my little pony designs on for the competition but it was fantastic to win another quality pair of clippers. A massive thank you to Horseland for running this awesome and fun competition especially during such trying times for everyone. A huge thank you to the amazing and generous sponsors of the class and donations of prizes, Wahl and weatherbeeta your generosity was appreciated! #horseland #horselanddigitalstyleshotsclipmyride #horselandmidland #prestigiousponies #wahlclippers #weatherbeeta

14.01.2022 WOW!!! What a blast from the past! Sorting an old storage tub out and come across some old pics! All these horses were babies with one being a green broken Andalusian stallion I had the pleasure of working with! Shame I only have a handful of pictures from nearly a lifetime of riding

13.01.2022 I absolutely love this horse and why I love working and starting babies. Joey has been in the paddock for 8 months now, only coming out and being handled for feet and teeth during this time. Today I started bringing him into work, hes only had 6 rides under his belt. The video clip isnt very clear its hard to video and lunge at once but even though its not perfect I love how responsive he is after so long out. Establishing good foundations at the beginning sets them and you up for a lifetime of success!

13.01.2022 Good luck to everyone competing this weekend at Perth Horse Trials Association in wooroloo. Dont forget to get your bookings in early for plaiting as to not miss out. #prestigiousponies #plating #showprep #dressage #eventing #perthhorsetrials #wooroloo #showjumping #crosscountry #prettyponies #showready

13.01.2022 Busy day today with Joey booked in for a scope first thing this morning. This has always been of interest for me to do with him as he never follows the rule book. I thought now with him about to commence his education under saddle and progression to start going out and competing would be the prefect time to get a baseline assessment. I was presently surprised with how clean his scope actually was! He was not perfect by any means and on medication for the next 28 days with a... follow up scan but for things this boy has invested in his life I would of expecting a high grade ulceration! Just shows that even with access to roughage all day round, low sugar feed and low stress horse and environment they can still be hiding some form of issues. Joey shows no outward typical signs of ulcers and it will be interesting to see if his foreign object eating will cease or not after treatment of his hyperkeratosis. Thanks to Tania at Avon Ridge Equine Veterinary Services for your services and professionalism once again! Later I took Dork out for some hill work out in the bush since the weather was simply amazing today. We came across a little creek going over the track and was a good test of how Dork handles running water.... he happily went on over and up the hill. Then on the way home we found a large puddle with significant tyre trenches under it. The joys of little legs we were nearly belly deep as we waded our way through! Hopefully this means there will be no issues at all with water jumps next season!

10.01.2022 Last week I got to clip and do a little work with the gorgeous big boy Salazar and his lovely owner Melanie. Melanie got in contact with me to clip Salazar and give her some starting steps to introduce her into english style and in-hand. I also conducted an assessment of Salazar under saddle and was very pleased of the backing job that was done with him and he is ready to commence his new career knowing the foundations have been put in place! ... I look forward to seeing this combination progress together in the future!

09.01.2022 Addison having her first go at clipping Alvin this afternoon. What an awesome little boy for only 4 years old!

06.01.2022 PRE - Clipping advice I have dealt with a few coats lately that havent been great and the final results have been less than favourable, and of all of these all could be great if #2 was conducted properly. #1. The most important thing to do for a successful clip is to start with a healthy coat! A healthy coat will have natural shine and will glisten once clipped. ... #2. WASH, WASH, WASH and then WASH again! I find it best to use a magic brush when washing. There are cheap generic brands also available and are just as good. This will allow you to get down to the skin even through the thickest of costs and lift off all dirt and dead skin cells. #3. Dry. Make sure they are complete dry and free of any soap suds before clipping. If you follow these 3 simple steps you will not only make your clippers or your own life easier the final result will be amazing. A clean, dry coat will keep blades sharp, make the clip quicker and wont leave any lines. Below is dork straight after I clipped him. No filters, no washing, direct from the washbay to the sun. The shine and quality speaks for itself. There is no need to have down time between clipping and a show if the clipping processes is done properly! Share with me below pictures of your clips or even feel free to PM me with any clipping questions you have to improve your skills.

Your ponies will be kept safe and well cared for in our top quality horse safe electric fenced paddocks on adlib hay and hard feeds morning and night along with any rugging required.
