24.01.2022 Today we are talking to Professional Flautist Kate Proctor. Kate performs in the Opera and Ballet Orchestra as well as many of Australias major Symphony Orchestras. She completed her Bachelor of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium and also managers to teach in between performing! Thanks Kate! 1. How old were you when you first picked up a flute? I started the flute when I was 8 years old. My older sister learnt it and played in her school band. I loved the sound and begged my... Mum to let me start. 2. Did your parents play any musical instruments? My Mum plays a bit of piano and teaches recorder and percussion ensembles. Dad loves music but doesnt play any instruments himself; though he does fancy himself as a professional kazoo player. 3. What do you love about playing the flute? I love the versatility in tone colour that it can create. The flute parts in orchestral music are always great to play and I like that it is such a portable instrument. 4. Who is your idol? My teachers have always inspired me and I have always looked up to them. My favourite players to listen to are Sharon Bezaly, Emmanuel Pahud and Denis Bouriakov. 5. Favorite piece of music written for the flute? I love all of the J.S. Bach sonatas, actually anything by Bach! There are a huge number of amazing solos by French composers which I enjoy learning and performing. My favourite repertoire to perform are the Shostakovich symphonies- they are so exciting and challenging. 6. Best tip/trick for caring for your instrument? The flute is so fragile and has lots of small parts! Its really important to make sure its put down properly and never left in dangerous places. Regular cleaning and a service once a year should keep a flute in good repair for many years.

How old were you when you first picked up the trumpet? A.I was 9 years old when I first started playing trumpet. We moved schools and they had a band! I...m still playing 30 years later Q. Did your parents play any musical instruments? A. My parents were not musicians and had no experience playing any instruments or even reading music. They were very supportive though. Always encouraging me to practice, driving me to concerts and extra rehearsals. Q. What do you love about playing the trumpet? A.The trumpet is such a versatile instrument. I started out in a concert band and also my local brass band. When I went to high school at the Sydney Conservatorium I was able to play in the school wind band, symphony orchestra and a variety of chamber groups. The trumpet is also one of the most soloistic instruments in an orchestra and also one of the loudest..I love the sound and colours I can create on my trumpet. Q.How is you Trumpet idol A. Im a classical trumpet player to my idols fall mostly within that genre. Hakan Hardenberger, Maurice Andrew, Wynton Marsalis and Arturo Sandoval. Q.Your favorite piece of music written for the trumpet? A. I love great symphonic works. My favourite composers are Gustav Mahler and Igor Stravinsky. One of my favourite pieces to perform is Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Q. Best tip/trick for caring for your instrument? A. Clean your trumpet regularly. There are many types of Saxophone but the most popular are the Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone. The Alto Sax is perfect for kids starting out not only because of its size but it requires less air flow to produce a sound than then larger Saxophones. Which is great when you are a beginner. 04.01.2022 When you look at most musical instruments you can track their evolution through the decades to the instrument they are today. This is not the case with the Clarinet. The Clarinet was invented in Germany around 1690 by Johann Christoph Denner and it looks almost identical to the Clarinet we see today! There have been small modifications thanks to modern materials but it remains unchanged. The Clarinet was based on an instrument called the Chalumeau which was like a recorder wi...th a single reed. The Clarinet soon replaced the Chalumeau in orchestras because of its interesting sound and larger musical range. Mozart wrote many pieces for the Clarinet before his death and by the 1800s it was a standard addition to all orchestras. The name Clarinet is based on the Italian word Clarinetto which means little trumpet Contact us today if you would like more information about the Clarinet or if you would like to hire one! www.prestoinstruments.com.au See more
