23.01.2022 Hand, Wrist and Forearm Injuries and Repetitious Computer Work The majority of people in Australia use computers, whether at work or at home and as such, the percentage of people with hand, wrist and forearm pain and injuries is increasing. When you find yourself using a computer on a daily basis for long periods at a time, there is a risk that you may damage the tissues that you are using, which can result in various repetitive strain injuries or carpal tunnel syndrome. In...juries such as these can begin as numbness and pins and needles in the hand which may become more noticeable particularly at night when the hand is resting. You may start to feel darting, sharp pains in the wrist that come and go quite quickly. If ignored, the pain may then move to the forearm and shoulders. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a painful hand disorder caused by pressure on the median nerve that runs through the wrist and into the hand. If left untreated and repetitive work continues, the inflammation can increase. The most common cause of CTS and other Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs) is the overuse of the mouse and/or keyboard through rapid or repetitive finger and wrist motions. When the injury is in the right hand, it is most often due to the repetitive use of the computer mouse. Ensuring healthy workplace practices and desk setup are some of the important prevention methods. Healthy workplace practices Regular pauses and stretching exercises are the first step in the prevention of CTS. Schedule work plans to include frequent breaks where stretches to the arms, hands, wrists, shoulders and neck can be performed. Be creative in taking breaks - get a glass of water, do some filing, stand when making phone calls so that you let go of the mouse and keyboard. Healthy workplace setup and design Rearrange the workspace to keep all necessary items within easy reach. Keep benches at waist height to ensure shoulders are relaxed and arms can bend gently at the elbows when seated. Alter your desk chair height so your forearms and upper arms are at a right angle to each other, this creates less pressure on the muscles and tendons in the wrist. Consider using an ergonomic mouse and keyboard as they reduce strain on the wrist and forearm and hand. If you would like further advice or treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, please contact our clinic.

19.01.2022 What causes Osgood Schlatters disease? The patella tendon inserts at the tibial tuberosity and through overuse can tug away at the bone causing inflammation. It is seen more often in children involved with running and jumping activities which put a much greater strain on the patella tendon. With repeated trauma new bone grows back during the healing which causes a bony lump which is often felt at the tibial tuberosity. It mainly affects boys aged 10 to 15 years old and should clear up when they stop growing and the tendons become stronger, however, it can occasionally persist into adulthood.

18.01.2022 Inflammation actually is good in the short run! When it becomes a long-lasting in your body known as chronic inflammation is when it directly leads to multiple diseases and conditions you should be aware of! http://ow.ly/SMea304U7oJ

18.01.2022 Your rib cage is made up of twelve pairs of ribs. The ribs attach to the spine in the back, and to the sternum (breastbone) in the front. The places where they attach are the rib joints and today we are talking about the rib joints at the back that connect to your spine. Usually you will feel pain from your rib joints in between the shoulder blades. It may be a burning pain or it could feel sharp and stabbing. You might also feel rib joint pain spreading to the front of your ...chest. Rib joint pain may start all of a sudden, or develop slowly. Some people wake up in the morning and feel pain just by stretching or twisting the wrong way. Other people feel pain that gets stronger as the day goes on, and still others feel it slowly getting worse over a few weeks. Taking a deep breath can make your rib pain worse. Sometimes it also increases when turning your head to look over one shoulder. You may feel a knot in your upper back that doesnt relax when it is massage d. This kind of knot is actually a swollen rib joint, and the muscles around it are usually tense and tight. Rib joint pain is mostly caused by stressful postures. For example, if you tend to hold your head forward and round (or slouch) your shoulders, a lot of stress is placed on the rib joints of your upper and middle back. This stress causes your rib joints to swell and become painful. Once this happens, the muscles near your swollen rib joints tighten up in a spasm. Swelling and muscle spasms stop your rib joints from working correctly, which causes even more strain to the area. Some other things that can affect the function of your rib joints and cause pain include: Muscle imbalance, such as tight chest muscles and weak muscles between your shoulder blades. Improper posture while using a computer Sleeping in positions that cause strain Colds, asthma, and other conditions that make you cough or sneeze a lot Some good tips for dealing with rib pain: Get adjusted! Get serious about good posture. Learn what good posture feels like and looks like and learn to practice it. Pay special attention to lifting your breastbone and dropping your shoulder blades. Use a good quality neck (cervical) pillow. Sleep with good support behind your neck. This is important for overall spine health. Stretch backwards at the end of the day. If you spend time slouched forward during the day, it is important to reverse the effects of slouching at the end of the day. For example, lying backward over a therapy ball for a few minutes at the end of the day helps to stretch out the front of the chest and gently mobilize the upper spine.

08.01.2022 Chondromalacia patella (also known as patellofemoral syndrome) is abnormal softening of the cartilage of the underside the kneecap (patella) and causes pain in the front of the knee (anterior knee pain). Chondromalacia patella is one of the most common causes of chronic knee pain and results from degeneration of cartilage due to poor alignment of the kneecap (patella) as it slides over the lower end of the femur. Symptoms of chondromalacia patella include discomfort of the i...nner front of the knee, aggravated by activity (running, jumping, climbing or descending stairs) or by prolonged sitting with knees in a moderately bent position. A common cause of chondromalacia patella is leg length inequality. Leg length inequality may be anatomical (an actual measurable difference in leg length) or functional (caused by muscle imbalance) in nature. Leg length inequality may result in pelvic torsion and over pronation of the foot, which causes internal rotation of the leg and affects tracking of the patella, in turn resulting in chondromalacia patella. Treatment for leg length inequality will depend upon its cause. If you are concerned about chondromalacia patella or leg length inequality, book an appointment for further assessment. See more
