15.01.2022 An RCD (residual current device), or more commonly known as a Safety Switch is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you or your family from fatal electric shock or an electrical fire. An RCD not only provides a level of personal protection but also has the fundamental overload protection ordinary fuses and circuit breakers comply with. This means that in an event where a fault occurs, a fuse or circuit breaker will only protect the installation from a short cir...cuit or overload, not the personnel. It is essential to ensure your home is protected by RCD’s (safety switches) to keep your family safe from accidents or faults such as a loose wire, or metal component becoming live. In fact, Energy Safe Victoria in 2018 updated the electrical regulations (AS3000) to make it a legal requirement that all new installations big or a small, have their circuit protection upgraded to or installed with an RCD, outlawing fuses and circuit breakers (for final subcircuits).
