21.01.2022 WIN FOR THE AGES AS LOWER ORDER PARTNERSHIP BRINGS US HOME 2 August 2019 at Dumbleton Primary Club 8 for 193 (38.3 overs) defeated Dumbleton CC 9 for 191 (40 ov...ers) C. McIntyre 26 not out, 2 for 22 and 1 catch, B. Oldridge 33 not out and 1 for 26, D. Langley 49 and 1 for 36 One of the most memorable Primary Club matches in recent memory resulted in a great win as we were brought home by lower order legends Brad Oldridge and Craig McIntyre. Joe Scarcella and Brad opened the bowling, Joe bowling 6 tight overs for just ten runs and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. Brad was slightly erratic by his usual high standards but picked up the first wicket lbw. The second wicket partnership took Dumbleton to 96 before first change Damien Langley struck, bowling the Dumbleton number 3. From this point we began to take wickets at relatively regular intervals, helped by the retirement of a Dumbleton opener on 50. Craig McIntyre came on and bowled the spell of the match, his leg spin at a beautiful pace, finding a consistent line and length. His first wicket fell caught and bowled, his second the Dumbleton overseas pro caught by Kevin Mason at mid on. Craig was not helped by Greg sun safety Stark who chose to locate himself comfortably in the shade of a tree at deep mid wicket, failing to pick up a chance which was spooned into the air metres from him (he later claimed that the tree had interfered with his view). Craig formed a formidable partnership with Rick Tricky Glover who again sent down teasing, wobbly outsiders which consistently hit the perfect length. The pressure applied by Glover was directly responsible for a run out, with Langley at cover throwing to keeper Euan Robertson. Robertson then executed a run out himself, gathering the ball with the speed and mobility of a heavily armoured military vehicle but nevertheless throwing down the stumps at the non strikers end. Will Noble and Kevin Mason closed out our bowling innings it was obvious that slow bowling was going to be more successful on this surface. Will picked up two wickets, one bowled through the gate, the other bowled attempting a rather awkward ramp shot. After 20 overs Dumbleton was well set at 2 for 97 but we restricted them to 9 for 191 off their 40. Openers Rob Stevenson and Greg Stark went out to bat. On this occasion our top order had much in common with Englands top three (at least pre- Rory Burns 100). Stevenson, having given Stark fair warning of his intention to pursue suicide singles when he got off the mark, hit the ball straight to mid wicket and ran Stark run out reasonably comfortably. Will Noble was bowled and then Stevenson was caught behind for 1. We were 3 for 11. Peach Povey and Damien Langley reconstructed the innings with a partnership of 82. Langley delicately caressed the ball through third man, and drove through cover aggressively. We were well set, and Langley due to retire shortly, when he chased a very wide delivery and spooned it to point for 49. Povey followed caught at slip for 27. Euan Robertson came and went quickly. Nathan Reay struck a couple of nice fours before departing to a woody sounding LBW and we were in dire straits - 7 down for 117. Kevin Mason watched on by his doppelganger alpha Kev in the pavilion played a sound knock of 19 to bring us back in the game, accompanied by Craig McIntyre who continued his fine performance. However Kevin too fell and we were 8 for 139. This was to be the key turning point in the game. Brad and Craig pulled together a partnership full of character and skill. Craig cut the ball regularly to the boundary through point and flicked the ball off his pads. The field was quickly pushed back for Brad as he crunched a straight six and pummelled fours. This gave the chance for these two to build a partnership with easy singles to long on and long off. While we watched nervously the target regularly came down. 41 required off 6 overs, 35 off 5, 22 off 4 and then 17 off 3. With eight required to win off two overs and Brad on strike we received a wide, then he pumped two consecutive cuts through point for four. We finally have a win on tour, and one we can be very, very proud of. All played a part but McIntyre and Oldridge are the heroes. 10.01.2022 SUPERB EFFORTS FROM LANGLEY AND GLOVER FALL SHORT AGAINST BARNES 7 August 2019 at Barnes Primary Club 197 (35.2 overs) lost to Barnes CC 5 for 201 (34.2 overs) ...D. Langley 95*, 2 for 29 and 1 catch, R. Glover 2 for 46 and 1 catch, R. Stevenson 29 Barnes cricket ground is tucked away in a bend in the Thames near the centre of London. This postage stamp ground has an unusual local rule: over the net on the very short straight boundary and into the nearby houses is out, with no runs scored. Greg Stark and Euan Robertson opened the innings. Euan struck two pull shots for four in the third over, while Stark began to work the ball around. We had advanced to 17, however in the eighth over Stark tried to smash the ball into the Thames and was bowled. Disaster struck soon after when Kevin Mason dawdled a third run and was run out, then Peach Povey was bowled off the inside edge first ball. Game organiser Ed Downer brought himself into the attack. He took the wickets of Euan bowled for 13 and Simon Richards for a duck. Both wickets fell to long hops which virtually ran along the ground as the batsmen had no chance while trying to pull. We also lost Joe Scarcella shortly afterwards, through a shot far too early and caught. It was evident that the pitch was extremely low and slow and we would need to play cleverly to set any sort of score. From 6 down for 43, Damien Langley and Nathan Reay set to work repairing the innings. Both played very well, identifying that the key was to keep out anything in a good area, target balls on a poor length and hit them hard to the short boundaries. Langley as usual was viscious on anything short, smashing his familiar mid wicket sweep and dabbing the ball away through the gully. Nathan has also batted very well on tour and did a first class job of accompanying Damo. Nathan had just begun to go through the gears, smashing a straight six and a couple of 4s when he left a wrong un from a canny leg spinner and was adjudged lbw for 22. However their partnership had taken us to 113 and given us a shot in the game. McIntyre fell shortly afterwards, but Rob Stevenson came out to bat and if anything his partnership with Langley was even better. Bobby played some familiar slaps in the area between mid wicket and long on (some would say Cow Corner). Langley also accelerated and hit some very big sixes. One over went for 18, another for 19 as Langley hit hard, including at Square Leg Umpire Steve Ward who was collected by a smashed pull (which still went for four). After 35 overs, Langley was 95 not out and we were 8 for 197 with a few overs to go. Unfortunately Stevenson was bowled for a superb 29 and Brad Oldridge was bowled first ball, leaving Langley short of a century. Considerable fines followed for Stevenson and Oldridge. With a splash of rain shortening the game to 35 overs we felt we were a strong chance. Joe Scarcella and Peach Povey opened the bowling and both bowled tightly, receiving less than they deserved. Peach eventually bowled one of the openers through the gate. An exhausted Langley came onto bowl and immediately started hooping the ball around. A second wicket fell at 103. While Barnes began to get away from us it was Tricky Ricky Glover who pulled us back into the game. Rick removed the opener who had passed 50, caught by Langley on the boundary. Roles were soon to be reversed. Langley bowled to the talented Barnes number four who was through his pull too early. The ball spooned to Rick at midwicket. Silence descended. Rick didnt move for several seconds. Then took one step, then another towards the ball, leaned forward and grabbed the ball at knee height, tumbling to the ground and being mobbed. Rick took a wicket shortly afterwards caught by Craig McIntyre at Long On. With seven overs to go, Barnes required more than 70 runs to win and we were firmly in it. However expensive overs cost us badly. One went for 13, one for 14 and one for 20 as Barnes closed in on our total. Put under pressure our fielding became sloppy with misfields and poor throws. After two consecutive Stark throws from the boundary ended up somewhere around the middle of the wicket, captain Reay yelled Starky, whatever youre aiming at, could you aim 10 metres left of it, please? We threw the ball to Craig McIntyre hoping for a miracle in the last over with just two runs required to win. While he drew an edge which did not go to hand, we had left him too much to do and we fell to a third consecutive last over defeat.
