24.01.2022 I wonder if technology has made us abdicate responsibility for things? When I’m on client’s sites, I regularly hear staff say, I've sent an email about that and I never heard back. It's not about abdicating responsibility. Too often in today's hectic world of information and data, we expect the technology to do the heavy lifting for us. ... We need to drive it rather than letting it drive us and our time and moderate it like a curator of content. It’s easy to send a quick email to asking a question or requesting information. Instead we should take time to consider the outcome we want to achieve, and recognise that when we ask somebody to do something, that doesn’t mean we abdicate our responsibility to follow up and ensure we get the information we need. We need to think about application and use of technology and not abdication. We need to think in terms of how we using technology to drive results rather than just giving people more things to do, more tasks that they need to complete things that they need to add to their never ending to do list. Focus on one or two things that really matter in the business day that's where true productivity lies. Donna Hanson is a productivity speaker and trainer who works with organisations and their teams to leverage technology to increase productivity and reduce risk, stress and frustration on everyday tasks. 21.01.2022 There is no magic solution! Balancing work and life is an ongoing challenge. It’s not something that is miraculously achieved and permanently stays that way. It is about balance; it’s about finding what’s right for YOU. ... The technology we use needs to be partnered with human interaction. In many instances, we don’t take into account human involvement required to determine how to leverage technology to improve our efficiency. We tend to rely on the technology to do the job for us and then feel frustrated when we struggle to cope, but reality is we just aren’t geared to cope with the volume of data we need to process. Many of the clients I work with are looking for THE answer. They ask, what’s the secret to balance and productivity? Many are looking for one thing, a download to the brain of information, like the plot of the movie The Matrix, or perhaps a USB stick with everything you or your team ever need and the ability to plug it into the back of their staff members heads and download everything. But productivity requires a combination of technology and human interaction or learning. Learning to use new technology is like going to the gym. You can’t expect to join the gym, get fit and they say, I’m fit, I don’t need to go to the gym anymore! Once you’ve got the mix right, how to best leverage a piece of technology for the outcome you desire, you need to monitor, maintain and manage it. You need to be regularly re-evaluating the productivity gain you are achieving because things change, circumstances change, customers’ needs change and your teams change. The old adage is when you stop learning you die. Reality is that is true. We are learning every single day and if you’re not open to learning, you’re not going to grow, then you’re not going to get better. Change is a part of life we must accept. The easiest way to get people to embrace new technologies is to communicate what’s in it for them, why is it valuable and how is it going to make their life easier. Ultimately your team is just doing their job. At the end of the day they go home to another life. What should you be doing to engage them and increase their productivity whilst they are in (or maybe not in) the office?

18.01.2022 Perspective Human nature is to measure ourselves against others we perceive as having better knowledge, or more skill in areas we may feel with are lacking. We often judge ourselves for not being at the same skill or knowledge level or label ourselves as not being good at ‘that sort of thing’. Nobody is generally good at something the first time they do it. That’s why we practice. It’s why we work on building skills. In much the same way as an athlete builds their skill, musc...les and mental state to be able to return a serve in tennis, or the stamina to play any other physically demanding sport. When we compare ourselves to others, we lose perspective. We forget to recognise the value we already have. Often groups I work with wonder how they’re ever going to remember everything they learn. They ask, how I manage to do it? I encourage them to release the pressure they place on themselves by choosing a different perspective. I liken it to tasks they complete in their role, and how the first time they did those tasks, it was likely to be a lot slower than it takes to do them now. Is there some technology you or your team use every day that you aren’t as good as you could be with it? Maybe you need to apply a different perspective this week?

11.01.2022 What’s next? Here’s what I think https://tinyurl.com/y4q6qkdh #productivity

10.01.2022 It was not until I’d had a few virtual meetings that I realised I needed help! The world changed in March 2020 when COVID-19 meant may organisations sent their teams home to work remotely. To stay connected virtually they relied on platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Go To Meeting or one of the myriad of applications available for video meetings. I had everything ready in my home office and was presenting live when the unthinkable happened..the doorbell ran...g.and it rang, and it rang again. Whilst I was mortified, thankfully due to my audio technology, my audience were none the wiser! What it DID teach me was that there were so many little things that could go wrong on a virtual presentation that I was not prepared for..I thought it’s not going to happen to me right? So I sat down and wrote a list of all the unconscious things I do prior to presenting along with some way out of left field things that could potentially happen when I do a live virtual presentation. Things such as a power outage and what would I do if that happened? Sure, I could tell the client, sorry we need to reschedule, but how unprofessional would that look? In the same way I have back up plans for a live presentation, I needed to make sure I had the equivalent to support virtual presentations. The result is my virtual presentation checklist. A checklist that has details of all the things I need to pre-check as I prepare for all my virtual presentations. I shared a copy of my checklist with a few colleagues who loved the idea and if you are interested, I’d love to share it with you. Just download it here. So what happened at my front door that day? The delivery person ended up leaving a note and I went to the post office later that day. Lesson learnt! https://tinyurl.com/DonnasChecklist presentationpower.primesolutions.net.au

09.01.2022 Are You Ever Going Back? So many things to consider moving forward about how we each feel about working from home vs getting back into the office. Having worked from home for the past twenty two years (other than presenting at events or on client premises), although it sounds nice in theory, I’m not sure how I’d feel about returning to a physical workplace. This great article titled Are You Ever Going Back? on www.inc.com is interesting reading. I do know the three adju...stments they mention that are now part of our day to day are likely to continue when we eventually return to a more, but very different workplace. What are your thoughts? #virtual #productivity tinyurl.com/y6lrxuso

07.01.2022 I often get my best ideas when I am out walking, exercising or just relaxing. Sometimes this irritates me, because I often want the idea when I need it and get frustrated when it doesn’t come to me straight away. I know that when I take time to step away from what I am doing to do something else, then come back, I often see it with fresh eyes. In 2012, Jason Fried, Co-Founder of what was then 37signals, but is now known as Basecamp Project Management & Team Communication sof...tware in an INC article, shared the idea of giving the company a month off from non-essential product work to focus on new product ideas, features, business models etc and then pitch ideas for consideration by the company. The beauty of the month off approach was it encouraged employees to collaborate and create ideas, then pitch them to the company for the chance to potentially have them developed. Whilst not every business may be able to afford to take a month off, COVID-19 has forced businesses to change the way they do things QUICKLY! I believe it takes time to make time. To get creative requires time away from the everyday. Whether it is to come up with a new product or service, streamline a process, or create a new one. Each of these requires time to consider what will and will not work. To test and measure and refine and adjust. What are you doing to ensure you and your team can get creative and don’t keep doing the same things expecting different results? #productivity https://tinyurl.com/yaquwerl

02.01.2022 Boredom is good for the brain! In a world of always ‘on’, it can be hard to truly switch off. 01.01.2022 Treat your time with respect Most people are careful when it comes to their money. We work hard to generate it, but somehow, it seems so easily spent. ... We all have the same 24 hours in the day yet some use it more strategically than others. Sometimes, without too much thought, we give our time away to other people and things not in our best interest. Why do we give our time away so easily yet we are a far more cautious when it comes to spending money? Realistically, we can always make more money but we can’t make more time. What are you doing today to make sure you are spending time on things that matter rather than just wishing the day away?

01.01.2022 It’s not what you know, it’s what you do with it! Often when I present at an event somebody comes up to me afterwards and says I knew that, but I’d forgotten about it. We generally know what we need to do increase our productivity however when you know something and don’t act on it you’re not actually utilising your knowledge at all. ... It’s always easy after the fact to say you know something but knowing something and doing something with that knowledge are two different things. It’s said knowledge is power, but knowledge isn’t power if it’s not acted on. What knowledge do you have that you should act upon today?
