16.01.2022 Chooks are truly free ranging at the moment, with the entire veggie patch open to them. We are hoping they’ll help clear up the ongoing overabundant slug population, as well as gobble up the cabbage moth caterpillars that enjoy our winter brassicas so much At this time of year there’s nothing too small and delicate for them to damage, and plenty to eat, and we welcome their scratching around to gently work the soil over, as well as their poo to fertilise everything. Animals... are such a vital addition to regenerative farming. Instead of having to add chemical interventions to control nature, we work to harness what nature already does so beautifully and use it to our advantage - as well as to the advantage of the land, and the animals. That brown chook is a particularly nosy and friendly companion to have with me during my daily rounds - she follows me around endlessly and constantly trips me up

09.01.2022 I am pretty confident we will be eating apples off our trees this year Last year’s horrendous conditions meant none of our trees bore any fruit. It’s such a joy to see them all fruiting again this season (just ask the local cockatoos ).

09.01.2022 I’m so very grateful that we are able to live the life we do out here. We’re incredibly lucky that we can serve up such delicious, freshly picked food for all of our meals. We work really hard to make it happen but the sense of satisfaction when we look at what we achieve each season is absolutely worth every drop of sweat and all the aching muscles. Our festive lunch yesterday included our own beef, salads made up of a variety of our veggies - including the first ripe tomato of the season, which is entirely amazing, a tomato in December where we live! - plus homemade bread and fruitcake, followed by piles and piles of fresh raspberries. Free range pigs will almost certainly be a welcome addition to the farm in 2021

06.01.2022 I am loving our tunnel (and the patch in general) just that little bit more this season. Other years we’ve put down a black fabric as a form of weed control. It works but we now believe that this method does damage to the infrastructure of the soil. Also, it creates such a sterile space and a garden should be anything but sterile! So this year we’ve experimented with straw mulch and a living mulch of different soil feeding crops such as millet, clover, and oats. ... This has created its own set of challenges. Slugs and caterpillars have been the bane of our lives, and it is more humid than ever in the tunnel which will leave our plants more susceptible to fungal disease such as blight. But it feels so good and so right. And the scent of all that basil intertwined with the tomatoes and the green cover crop is intoxicatingly sweet and fresh. So although it’s messy and unkempt and harbouring plenty of slimy creepy little pests, I love it. It’s what it should be and I am slowly learning to accept everything as it presents itself to me.
