13.01.2022 If you’re a Burgundy lover and collector, you’ll know that special thrill when you discover a Domaine that produces wine of exceptional quality and is yet largely undiscovered and, better still, seems to have missed the memo about pricing over the last 20 years. SC Guillard from Gevrey Chambertin is one such Domaine. We admit to being a little facetious about pricing as there are still many good value wines made on the Cote d'Or and really it is the top echelon that seem t...o spiral further out of our reach each year. However, to find a producer of this calibre within one of the great red wine communes is increasingly rare as the value option move out to the satellite villages. Each year we buy these wines for the store and the restaurant because they are such excellent representations of their commune, of quality and of value. The wines themselves are remarkably consistent and while they trace the character of each vintage faithfully they always deliver beautifully silken Burgundy, characterised by excellent fruit definition holding within it the unique Gevrey earth quality and judicious use of oak provides both structure and seasoning of cedar and vanillin. 05.01.2022 Julian Langworthy was named Wine Maker of the Year for 2019 in the James Halliday Wine Companion. His Rose has been Halliday’s top, or equal top, pick three years in a row (from Deep Woods or Nocturne, as was the case this year for his 2019). He was the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge winner 2015 (Australia’s most prestigious Chardonnay award) and for four consecutive years he was awarded the Best Cabernet or Cabernet Blend at Royal Melbourne Wine Show. He won the covet...ed Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2016 and took out the Halliday Cabernet Challenge in 2019 as well, just because. The list goes on and on, seriously, his cache of awards is verging on ludicrous. Julian's work as chief winemaker at the Fogarty group is well known and his home project in Margaret River, where he is a rare breed, an actual local boy, is very quickly gaining a reputation as one of the region’s, and indeed Australia’s, most exciting new labels. Nocturne is Julian and his wife Alana’s passion project, though perhaps today the term project should no longer be used, it has grown beyond that phase, I think. Nocturne is the small estate which is focused on producing wines of the highest calibre but, in the case of the SRS, crafted for accessibility and enjoyment Julian is a strong advocate for Australian Cabernet and his Nocturne SR (Sub Regional) Cab is built around plush and accessible lines. His Chardonnay, while he may not like me saying this (Julian lives and breathes Cabernet), is often the highlight for me in both his own estate and his Deep Woods wines. And his Rose...this is the sneaky one. Always an energetic, dry and snappy style and consistently one of the best in Oz in recent years, if not the best So, this is Nocturne’s Sub Regional release for 2020.
