19.01.2022 A recent article written by our founder to the Narre South Lions Cricket Club: Great to hear you Lions are back able to play. Recently I walked past a district cricket match where a batsmen kept cramping, and actually had to retire. In my eyes that should never, ever happen no matter the conditions, the weight of the player, the fitness of the player of if he/she had a few too many frothies the night before. So I thought as a fitness professional I’d share my top tips if yo...u’re the guy running out to a cramping player. As any of you that have done endurance events like Ironmans, Marathons, etc would know, we are always provided with resources to stop cramping as it happens all the time. So instead of running out with just a water bottle or Gatorade bottle, and helping with a stretch (which is just temporary, won’t fix the problem) run out to them with two things: 1. Spoonful of Vegemite (salt and potassium) 2. Bottle of half electrolyte, half water mix That’s it. Now they might not like the taste but it will work fast, hence the toughest endurance events in Australia have good old vegemite at each aid station. If it’s specific to one area you’ll often see in elite sport a spray applied, it’s just magnesium spray, most gyms sell it including ours. It’s the same ingredients used in Epsom baths to recover post match. If there is a drop in blood sugar, get FLAT coke or even red Bull into the player. To be in form and have to retire over cramping is a real shame so this Summer add some vegemite to the match kit. As for that district cricketer I don’t blame him the team just didn’t know any better. And from personal experience that basic method has helped calf cramping in many a triathlon.
