If I dont catch myself I get sucked in to the vortex of voyeurism: comparison, judgement, gossip. Its a nasty place to hang out. Its all Buddhism pursues happiness through the removal dukkha or mental dysfunction that arises from craving. Our peace of mind is achieved by detaching from the cycle of craving. Positive, wholesome thoughts are the first step. ... What matters is the people you genuinely connect with. Friends, not followers. The time you take in nature. Sunshine, not scrolling. 23.01.2022 These first time yogis are in their 60s and ready to give anything a go! Every year this group of women take a trip together to reconnect and spend time in their friendship. They have done this for the last 22 years. So much love in this room I giggled my way through a morning practice 39 floors in the sky. What a pleasure. From 7-31 July we have been in Mercury Retrograde: the planet o...f communication has appeared to orbit in reverse, creating disharmony in travel, technology and communication. So many of you have reached out and spoken of the you have dealt with over the last few weeks. Energy is low, enthusiasm is nil and tears are brimming. I hear you! When feeling this way my sagely advice is to practice self care: let the tears roll, eat your favourite healthy meal, do yoga & get to nature. Lotus (Padma) Mudra is another subtle asana that can invoke love and fill up your cup. Draw the heel of the palms together and spread the fingers like the petals of the lotus, creeping up through the murky depths, drawing light into the heart. This mudra symbolises purity and perseverance. As the Buddhist say, "no mud, no lotus" Repeat a mantra "I welcome metta, loving kindess into my heart. 10.01.2022 My... what a handsome set of hamstrings you have! OK, slightly biased, this is my love and the hamstrings that fit his 63 body are TIGHT!! Fun fact: Did you know you have three hamstrings? ... Two towards the inside (medial) part of your back thigh and the other around the outside (lateral) Tight hamstrings can cause lower back pain, tightness in the hips and pain in the knee area. All sorts of mischief Our body works in a kinetic chain, if one part is tight it may effect another connected part. So sometimes where you feel the symptom, it’s not always the cause Of course yoga is the best way to stretch out tight muscles, I say! I might take my sweet time on these ones... Exercise: To stretch out all three of your hamstring effectively, take a forward fold with your feet close together. Bends your knees if it feels really tight. Take 5 breaths. Then step your feet about 1m apart, fold as far forward as you can, repeat 5 breaths. Then widen your legs as far as you can (without involuntarily doing the splits, be sensible people) Breathe You can also do this series of stretches seated, like this divine Man God above (use a strap if you can’t reach your toes) or even lying on your back with your legs up the wall. Wall practice is great to take pressure off your lower back. Hamstrings are one of our easiest set of muscles to stretch and can often be the most troublesome. In my mind, I was Gandalf climbing to save Middle Earth The elements were against me, oxygen was lacking and I could have just stayed in bed and waited for breakfast. But I didnt. 01.01.2022 Do you practice yoga every day? I used to, for many years. It was my reboot, my reset button. As a very physical, spirited person I craved the feeling a solid yoga session would deliver. I wanted sweat, strength & power ... I strived to do cool poses and hard stuff, I would try and squeeze in as much practice as possible between solo parenting, running a business, home and staying connected to people I love. I was tired And then I just stopped giving a sh*t. What did it matter if it could stand on my head for an hour? It wasn’t going to make me a better person The asanas, or postures of a yoga practice, are only one of Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga The other seven limbs involve breathing, meditation, observances and behaviours. * How you treat yourself & others * What you do in your day to foster calm, compassion & peace This is where true yoga shines through It is just as much work as trying to nail a pose, if not harder. I now see the asanas as the foundation of a yoga practice, the place to start. The best spot to get acquainted with yourself: your expectations, limitations, triggers and actions. I look at this video & immediately criticise myself, then I take a breath and stop giving a I’m good with Me Start your humble work. Roll out a mat. If you’re already in your practice, switch up the style you’ve been doing. Try meditation. Or move your body more. Observe your thoughts & actions and remember... Nothing ever happens in your comfort zone You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to torture yourself to be better. You are allowed to take it slow and easy. Yoga is a life long journey of self discovery. Take your time. Make mistakes. Learn the lessons.
