23.01.2022 OUR THREE SELVES ++ Have you ever felt exhausted by the effort you put in to presenting a version of yourself you think will be accepted? What would be possible for you if you could let that go and just be who you are? One model which really made me pause and look at myself, was learning we all have three layers to ourselves:... 1At the source is our core; our true, authentic, beautiful selves full of love, wonder and creativity. 2The first layer we develop over our core is all the limiting beliefs weve made up about ourselves, our perceived shortcomings. This layer drives our shame and negative self-talk. 3The final layer is the version of ourselves that we show the world, and what we use to cover up the first layer of shame. This is what we think the world will accept. With this in mind, Id invite you to reflect on whether youre trying to solve problems that sit in your final layer (what we call safe problems. Eg: procrastination, goal setting, work/life balance)? OR Are you solving problems that sit at a deeper level (what we call risky problems. Eg, I believe Im not good enough). Its only by diving into those risky problems that we can peel back ALL the layers, and come back to our core, authentic selves. Sonow what? Well to get you reconnecting to your core, here are four journal prompts you can use to reflect on how this applies to you. What of my Core do I still allow to shine? What do I feel I need to hide from the world? What mask do I present to the world? What would be possible for me if I could peel this all back? I love this question by @tombilyeu which I came across via a YouTube video by @struthless69 (which was shared to me by @veryonbrend ) And I shared this exact question with one of my clients last week What a GREAT question to reframe our thinking about the things that happen TO us! Turn that around and consider, how is this the best thing to ever happen to me?... How is Melbourne being in Level 4 lockdown the best thing thats ever happened to me? Well, its teaching me the importance of patience and giving me lots of space to focus on whats really important to me. 21.01.2022 CHANGE BY CHOICE, NOT CHANCE I was listening to some recordings by @sharon.pearson.official and she said something inspiring! Change doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by choice Making changes in our lives in a DECISION we make. It takes effort. It takes commitment (and often recommitment over and over again). We don’t just wake up one day and ‘poof’, we’ve changed! ... We’ve all heard the quote often attributed to Einstein that insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Yet many people still do exactly that. We stay in jobs we don’t like, in relationships that aren’t serving us, in mindsets that keep us small and in limiting beliefs we’ve created as unknowing children Let’s get better at choosing change. CHOOSING the life we want to have, rather than feeling imprisoned by my previous choices. CHOOSING to let go of what’s no longer serving us. CHOOSING new beliefs that project us forward. The fact is, we are all affected by our conditioning, our upbringing and the things weve made up about the world ... When I work with clients to bring this to their attention, they often ask me HOW to change the beliefs that arent serving them Well Mr Reynolds has the answer right here! Undoing decades of conditioning is not something that solved in one coaching conversation. Its something we need to recommit to every single day I know that might seem hard, but man the pay off is SO worth it! The ability to stop being the victim. Four weeks in Maui, Hawaii at @mauiyogashala with five other beautiful women learning about yoga... or so we thought! When I look back on that time now, the true learnings were about myself Deep reflection, facing my fears and insecurities, taking a good hard look at my beliefs and making a commitment to ME ... 18.01.2022 Put the phone down! Ive shared before the power of making friends with your discomfort as a way of starting your journey to conscious living. This means being more mindful, being able to sit with the uncomfortable feeling and resist the need to numb and distract. Then last night as I was reading @glennondoyle #Untamed, I read this phrase which I believe adds another layer to why being still with our thoughts is so important ... As Doyle describes, its through experiencing boredom that we tap into our creativity! We figure out ways to move out of boredom (through writing, picking up an instrument or throwing a basketball) and actually GROW! Learning this for ourselves and teaching it to our children and loved ones is a beautiful gift, the gift of boredom, through which we discover who we are and step into our authentic and incredible self! 17.01.2022 Completer, Finisher I was talking to my best friend the other day and she mentioned the term, completer finisher to me. A quick google search revealed that a completer finisher is a person who ensures projects are completed thoroughly. They see things through to the end. I can definitely relate to this concept and would consider myself to be a completer finisher type of person myself. I love the kick of endorphins I get from putting a line through an item on my to d...o list! This role type is great in a work environment! Efficient, determined and driven. However, what does it mean in the world of self-development and growth? When we just want to tick the item off the list and move on to the next project? When do I know that Ive completed personal growth? Unfortunately you cant intellectualise an internal journey Theres no destination, and in the case of personal development, this is a LIFE LONG journey. I raise this because I know how frustrating it can be for the completer finisher types amongst us We want to get to the end, reach level 10 in the video game of life and tick it off! Rather, it takes time, vulnerability, openness, trust and most of all patience Each day as we move through the journey, we learn more about who we are, what we want, what we value and what we stand for And the only way to move through this journey is to be IN it (as opposed to waiting for life to begin once weve ticked off everything, which I must admit was an old thinking pattern of mine). All emotion are valid and suppressing emotions only brings up shame - which relates to the MEANING weve attached to that emotion. When we apply a negative meaning to an emotion, we dont allow ourselves to truly shine the light on it. In doing so, it festers under the surface and threatens to come out at any point in time Now you have two problems, the emotion itself and the anxiety about when it might show up! So today, if you want to cry, scream, moan, run, kick, laugh, pray or shrug, I encourage you to do so . Feel the emotions, notice what comes up for you, and just face it with non-judgement Were all going through this together, and were gonna be ok And if you need to talk, reach out to me. 16.01.2022 f r i d a y - f u n As we slide into the weekend, I thought Id share 10 things about me that you may or may not know! 1 The first concert I ever went to was Michael Jacksons History Tour I was 11 and it was the coolest thing Id ever experienced at that time!... 2 I live in Melbourne these days but I grew up in sunny Brisbane! I also lived in London for about 2 years which was an incredible time in my life! 3 My favourite get to know you question is: If you could have 3 dream houses anywhere in the world, where would they be? Mine would be: London, Byron Bay and somewhere in Tuscany! 4 Ive worked in the corporate world for 15 years, Im a yoga teacher at One Hot Yoga & Pilates and now have my coaching business through PRiZM. I love having these different aspects to me (business, spiritual, logical, curious, hippie). I have my crystals in one hand and my to-do list in the other! 5 Im a gemini which Ive often used to explain the fact that I have all these different sides of me (and the fact that I struggle to pick food from a menu!) 6 Creating my PRiZM Cards was a labour of love and something Im really proud of! I use them when I need some inspiration and I love sharing them with my clients. 7 Im silly! I walk silly around the house, dance silly when Im in a good mood, and make up silly words! I like being playful and not taking myself too seriously! 8I had my own reawakening ~ 7 years ago where I started questioning why I was unhappy. This kick started my journey of self-discovery, and Im now passionate about helping other people to live a conscious life that lights them up! 9 Im a thalassophile, I absolutely love the ocean Every time I set my foot on sand I feel a sense of peace wash over me and I feel like Im home. Im also very opinionated that the Bay in Victoria is not a beach! Im the eldest of three, I have twin brothers. Beliefsare generally formed in two ways: 1by our experiences, inferences and deductions, or 2by accepting what others tell us to be true.... . What does this mean? . It means that beliefs are essentially the made-up stuff that weve told ourselves! Which meansif its just stuff weve made-up, we may as well make up stuff that serves us! . I love this quote by Henry Ford because it shines a light on the power of the mind. Whether we believe we can or cant, whether were worthy or not, whether were loveable or not is all within our control . 16.01.2022 What are you telling yourself? . I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and she telling me about a job she was interested in applying for. She was really excited about the prospect of this new job, but then added yeah its great, I probably wont get it . I share this story because each of us has an inner dialogue, the voice in our heads that talks to us all day This voice is a part of us, a part of who we are, and we inherently identify with that voice.... . What does yours say? . Whether we realise it or not, our subconscious mind is ALWAYS listening to the things we tell ourselves. And in the case of my friend, the message that her inner voice sends to her body is that Im not going to get that new job - before shes even applied! . NLP acknowledges that there is a fundamental connection between the brain (neuro), language (linguistic), and our internal and external behaviors (programming) . This mind-body connection means what we think and tell ourselves will impact how we feel, how we behave, and what we experience . 13.01.2022 MOVING TOWARDS I had a wonderful session with a client recently and shared the concept of moving away vs. moving towards Ever heard of this concept? Essentially, most people will spend much more energy moving AWAY from something they dont want than moving TOWARDS something they do want ... Knowing this is part of our humanness is powerful when it comes to setting goals, as it plays into our motivation; whether we are intrinsically or extrinsically motivated to achieve the goal Say you wanted to write a book If you were in a moving away state of mind, your reasons for writing a book might be: To become famous Because someone else is doing it (FOMO) Because your parent always told you to write a book In this case, when it comes to actually sitting down and putting pen to paper, you might find yourself procrastinating or avoiding the subject Contrast that with if you were in a moving towards state of mind Your reasons for writing a book might be: To serve others with your story To share the lessons youve learned To leave a legacy for your children As you can see, these reasons are internal, intrinsic and connected to your purpose When we are intrinsically motivated to achieve a goal, its because the goal is congruent with our values, it provides inherent satisfaction and contributes to our growth and self-actualisation! If you have a goal that youre struggling to take action with, consider whether you are in a moving away or moving towards mindset. Here are 3 tips to help you redirect your motivation to moving towards Awareness - as always, having awareness of this concept is a great way to start getting curious about your motivation. Purpose - are you clear about your purpose and where this goal sits within that? Starting to explore and define your purpose will help you connect with moving towards mindset. 13.01.2022 Have you heard of the Wheel of Fear? The Wheel of Fear (which @rhondabritten wrote about in her book, Fearless Living) is a cycle we can fall into. It goes something like this: Something triggers a fear in us that we arent good enough We avoid doing the thing that triggers that fear... This ensures the fear comes true We generalise this to mean that were not good enough for anything Weve heard that Courage is the antidote to Fear. So how to do we muster up courage? Simply willing it into existence doesnt work. And if were WAITING for Courage to show up in order to conquer our Fear, well remain standing still, not taking action Well continue to hide and use external things to numb our pain of not growing watching TV, being busy, blaming it on kids/work/circumstances So how do we BUST through the Fear and summon in Courage? THE KEY IS TO TAKE ACTION! In doing so we create a knew, more resourceful cycle: The more action we take, the more we prove to ourselves that we CAN actually do the thing that were fearing. And the more we act, the more we magnify our abilities to overcome that challenging thing. Eventually, its no longer a challenge and were ready for the next level of growth! 11.01.2022 WHAT IF . Setting goals is daunting business. I dont know anyone thats ever set a real goal that didnt face obstacles - thats the nature of goals! . But something that can contribute to our procrastination on goals, is constantly asking the What If question... What if I have to move interstate? What if I lose my job? What if I get injured? What if its raining? . What if, what if, what if!!! . I want to share today that this is a classic procrastination strategy, where we are too focussed on the answers to problems that havent even occurred yet! RATHER than actually taking action and seeing what unfolds. . What were really afraid of is the responsibility that comes from taking action on our dreams and the potential for not achieving them. . If youre stuck in the what if, Id encourage you to let that go and INSTEAD turn your attention to the Why? Why is this a goal for you? Why does this matter? . Any goal or dream that is worthwhile will take effort, discomfort and overcoming challenges. Your grit and persistence is what will get you there, not planning for every conceivable possibility before even trying! with a big enough WHY, well work out the HOW. . 10.01.2022 There are two types of problems that we experience in life: The safe problems The risky problems You might be surprised to know that MOST of the time we are experiencing safe problems. Safe problems are those that are created by our false self, and the kind of problems that keep us busy, distracted and focused on things that are outside of ourselves ... Some examples of safe problems are overwhelm, procrastination, perfectionism, control and self-sabotage I love the way @sharon.pearson.official summarises it: Safe problems are what we have so that we dont have to deal with the risky problems. So what are risky problems? Almost all risky problems can be summarised down to taking RESPONSIBILITY That means peeling back all the inner dialogue and things weve told ourselves to keep us safe, and taking responsibility for reconnecting to who we truly are at our core. Learning to trust ourselves. For several years, my life consisted of finishing university, getting a new job, getting engaged, getting married, buying a home, newlywed life, preparing to move to London, ACTUALLY moving to London, travelling to Europe every three weeks, making new friends, finding new jobs it was hectic! And then suddenly, I was back in Australia. I was back home, back at my old job, and back to my old life. I stared out at the beautiful 17th floor view of the Storey Bridge and the Brisbane River from my work office. It was a perfect August day in 2013 in my home city. And I felt nothing. Numb. Lost. I didn’t even notice the tears running down my face at first until a teardrop plopped on my notebook, breaking my trance. 09.01.2022 BRING OUT YOUR BRILLIANCE! . I truly believe each and every one of us is capable of achieving whatever we want for our selves and for our lives. To live a life full of spark, magnificence and brilliance! . But many of us spend our time hanging out in our darkness... I cant be brilliant, its not within me Its not meant for me That person is better than me Im better than others I cant . Which means we end up hanging out in shame. And shame LOVES shadows . We usually stay in this dark way of thinking due to a fear of not being good enough, not being loveable or not belonging... which are the three universal fears These are fears and limiting beliefs weve established through our childhood and carry through life. . Bringing out your brilliance is a CONSCIOUS choice to reconnect to who you are at your core To know that the answers to your problems are not by changing other people. But rather, by looking to our inner world, acknowledging our shadows, and choosing to step into the light . You deserve to have the life that brings you joy and lights you up! This week, Ive invested in myself by attending a course and learning loads about how people learn and grow, and how I can support people through that by accommodating to different learning styles . Its been a rollercoaster week! Highs and lows, moments of joy as well as major self doubt Yep - I set a goal and obstacles came up, some tough ones to overcome. Its taken hard work, persistence and grit AND I have learned a tonne! ... . 07.01.2022 The grass is greener where you water it * This concept is paramount to changing your mindset around achieving your dreams! * We often look at others over the (metaphorical) fence and think things like:... they are so much better than me I could never be as good as them/ I could never have that if only I could do/have that * Can you relate? I know I can! * But these limiting beliefs are NOT true! Theres a fable about a boy and his father walking through a garden and they find a butterfly struggling to push out of the cocoon Watching the butterfly struggle, the boy becomes anxious and so the father grabs some scissors and cuts the cocoon open so the butterfly can be free. . However, the butterfly cant fly, and instead crawls around and dies shortly afterwards ... . It turns out that only by going through the struggle of pushing out of the cocoon on its own, that the butterfly creates the strength in its wings to fly By trying to remove the obstacles or pain for the butterfly, the father actually hindered the growth of the butterfly. . This analogy is true for humans as well. We set ourselves goals and invariably there are obstacles and struggles in the way These cause us pain which we naturally want to avoid so we often stop reaching for that goal. . Likewise, when we see a loved one going through a difficult time, we naturally want to jump in and save them from the pain . But what this fable teaches us is that the obstacles and the pain are the WAYS through which we GROW If everything came easy in life, we would never strive for more, seek improvement or develop. . As we continue to face obstacles in our lives (whether thats through COVID-19, challenging goals or difficult decisions), keep in mind these are all contributing to your growth and the person you are becoming . 05.01.2022 Hold on to precious moments Each and every day, we experience moments of magic Moments that if we tuned into, have the ability to take our breath away. Mindfulness is a buzz word that tossed around quite a lot these days. But what is mindfulness? ... Its actually very simple: choosing to be here (in the moment) rather than somewhere else. To SLOW down To do just ONE thing at a time, rather than our usual multi-tasking. Dont get me wrong, Im far from perfect at this! Its an ongoing practice where I catch myself being mindless and make a conscious decision to tune in. The better I get at it, the faster I catch myself! I think thats the real trick - get faster at noticing the mindlessness and choosing to be fully present instead As I reflect on the week gone by, these are some of my magic moments: Sitting quietly in my tiny garden, feeling the sun on my face and listening to the sounds of nature Closing my eyes and feeling the hot water wash over my skin in the shower Laughing with my partner as we goofed around in our usual way Going for a walk with a friend and feeling truly heard Closing my eyes and swaying as I listened to Folklore by Taylor Swift for the hundredth time, poetry to music Curling up on my couch WITHOUT my phone and watching one of my favourite TV shows What have been your moments of magic this week? A moment to look back on the year that was and reflect on who I’ve been, where I’ve grown and what I’ve learned As the end of 2020 approaches, there’s a lot of discussion around Thank goodness 2020 is nearly over or can’t wait for this year to end ... Now don’t get me wrong, this year has been tough! There have been more challenges than most people ever would have imagined. 01.01.2022 #Repost @shutupandyoga with @get_repost As the end of the year approached, during the month of December amongst the Christmas chaos, I reflected on a year of crying, complaining, feeling awful, looping I felt like a broken record. I felt like I had hit rock-bottom and I was finally sick of myself. So I decided to make a resolution for the new year: instead of feeling sad and sorry for myself, I decided to take steps to feel happier. Not in the ‘slap on a happy face ...and pretend to be happy’ kind of way. Buttrulyhappy. It was finally time for me to answer some of those tough questions I’d been avoiding. The next 12 months brought about the biggest changes in my entire life.I held onto my New Year’s resolution at every moment and at first, used it to make small decisions.Choosing Sunday brunch over Saturday clubbing. Reading books instead of scrolling. Meditation and affirmations instead of beating myself up. And then came the bigger decisions: Choosing my own happiness over living up to others’ expectations. Dreaming instead of settling. Listening to my own inner guide instead of seeking external validation. And ultimately, choosing to be alone rather than in a marriage that both my husband and I had outgrown. Conscious living comes down to one key ingredient: responsibility. Complete responsibility for the good, the bad, and the ugly.
