22.01.2022 Amelia Farrugia delighted audiences at the weekend when she performed in the Salon Series by The Langham which we are presenting with Sydney’s most elegant hote...l. This vibrant and versatile soprano seamlessly transitioned from art song to opera to musical theatre, accompanied by Verna Lee’s enchanting harp. She is a unique talent - and remarkably resilient. 25 years ago on this day she sat in a cafe at one of Australia’s most famous historic monuments, unaware of the presence of a man who is now serving life imprisonment for the worst massacre by a single gunman in our history. She and her colleagues were having a day off during their tour of Opera Australia’s production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola, which they had been performing in Hobart. At the end of lunch, a discussion ensued as to whether they should have coffee at the cafe or find another venue. Fortuitously, they decided on the latter course of action and were leaving the Port Arthur site just as shooting could be heard in the distance. At first they thought it was some form of historical re-enactment but the arrival of a police officer alerted them to the ghastly reality. I am delighted that this wonderful soprano has accepted my invitation to be guest artist with the great Maltese tenor Joseph Callleja when he makes his eagerly anticipated first tour here in September. It will be another opportunity to celebrate our good fortune that Amelia and her colleagues made that call 25 years ago. See more

12.01.2022 Gerard Willems, one of the great interpreters of the piano works by Beethoven is performing at The Langham, Sydney this Sunday at 2pm. Hear him perform Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and other great pieces accompanied by a specially designed menu. It is also an opportunity for a belated celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday as celebrations couldn't take place last year.
