20.01.2022 Did you know that Alpacas have higher Vitamin D requirements than sheep and goats? Experts believe that this is because they naturally live at high altitudes and therefore have high UV exposure allowing them to produce high levels of vitamin D. Some animals are more at risk of having low vitamin D than others. The Alpaca Association of South Australia states that young animals, those with dark coats and any animals that live in the south during winter or are housed may have higher vitamin D requirements. Vitamin D is easily supplemented by an injection under the skin that can be administered by a vet or an owner who is comfortable with injection of their alpaca. Give us a call on 8313 1999 if you would like more information.

18.01.2022 WHEN SHOULD I CALL THE VET SERIES PINKEYE IN CATTLE Pinkeye is painful and can severely affect animal production.... WHAT IS IT? Pinkeye is a bacterial infection of the eye that causes inflammation and can cause blindness. Pink eye is contagious. SYMPTOMS Weeping, partially closed eye, milky colour (opaque) of eye ball. CAUSES * Dusty conditions * Flies * Bright sunlight * Physical irritation of the eye (e.g. grass seeds, thistles) TREATMENT Avoid the above causes where possible and contact your Veterinarian for advice if you notice these symptoms. Early treatment is recommended to reduce the chances of it spreading amongst your herd and can also reduce the long term affects causing blindness.

06.01.2022 The Equine Health and Performance Centre not only works with horses, we see a variety of animals. Today Polly, an 18 year old Camel came to see Dr Olivier Simon... for an ongoing lameness in her left hind leg. On examination Polly was found to have muscle atrophy (muscle wastage) over the left gluteal region. Palpation of her left stifle revealed a significant swelling on the medial aspect (inside) when compared to the right stifle. Ultrasound and radiographs were performed and the lateromedial radiograph of the stifle revealed significant joint changes consistent with cruciate disease. Joint effusion, tibial advancement and osteophytes were noted in the stifle. Polly’s devoted owners have decided to take her to surgery which is planned for next Tuesday. Stayed tuned for her update.
