25.01.2022 Our members have access to some useful resources to help educate their clients on smart balloon practices, responsible use and disposal of balloons. To become a member, please visit www.peba.com.au and read our commitment.

24.01.2022 Gibraltar didn’t ban balloons... but they did ban the deliberate release of balloons... A great step in the right direction of the responsible use and disposal of balloons. We need ALL of the Australian States and Territories to do the same and amend their Litter Laws to ban the deliberate release of balloons. Consistent laws relating to the deliberate release of balloons will help the industry and the community progress into an environmentally and economically responsible future.

23.01.2022 Be Balloon Smart! Don’t let it Go, Pin it & Bin it

20.01.2022 PEBA has been making representations to the newly appointed NSW Environment Minister to request the removal of the 19 balloon release allowance from the state litter act. We a very pleased to advise that representatives of PEBA have been invited to a meeting with the Senior Advisor to Minister Kean later this month in Sydney. 18.01.2022 Let's Bring Some Balance Back to the Conversation. In response to the misreporting of information and exaggerated claims that are surrounding the balloon industry, PEBA have put together an info sheet to help address some of the myths. We will be sending this out to various interest groups in the community to address the reporting of misinformation. ... PEBA stands behind the development of policies that are environmentally responsible, are commensurate with the actual level of impact and do not unnecessarily deprive balloon artists and small business owners of their livelihoods. 14.01.2022 Medical Helium is not used to inflate balloons. The helium used to inflate balloons is not pure enough for medical use. It is a by-product gathered during the production of medical grade helium. Instead of wasting this resource, it is collected and recycled. The sale of balloon gas offsets the cost of medical helium. According to an Australian Helium Gas supplier The transportation of Liquid Helium from an ISO into a storage flask (Dewar) is a very meticulous process. Due t...o liquid helium’s sensitivity to warmer temperatures, the majority of the liquid helium boils off in the transfer process. Instead of losing this helium, the boil off is captured in a large balloon. This lower grade helium is then recycled and compressed into smaller storage cylinders which becomes part of the balloon gas supply. If this boil off were not captured and recycled, a huge amount of helium would be lost and wasted in the process. This recycled helium is use for weather balloons, scientific purposes and balloon gas. Reductions in demand can also be experienced due to increased recycling and increasingly efficient use of helium. The helium industry reports that non-essential market segments like the balloon industry sector are experiencing shortage of supply and absorbing large price increases due to the fact that essential markets receive their supply first. The shortage is due to a number of factors that include global economic forces, political issues, rationing and unscheduled maintenance on a large helium facility. Due to these fluctuations of supply and demand, the balloon industry is decreasing its reliance on helium by increasing our use of air-filled designs. Shortage and price increases provide incentives to reduce helium consumption and the industry is evolving accordingly. We are already reducing our helium consumption by stopping balloon releases, this is environmentally and economically responsible.

07.01.2022 For the past 72 years, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has released thousands of balloons at the Indy 500. This family tradition has been met with criticism, with environmental groups and members of the public from across the world emploring them to change their pre-race celebration. PEBA has been working closely with the PEBA US team to provide the organisers of the Indi 500 with an update to the Balloon Industry's practices, asking them to BE THE CHANGE just as we have in t...he last few years. "We understand that the Indy 500 Balloon Release has been a family tradition for many years. Although releases of helium balloons have also been a tradition in our industry, we have in recent years noted a distinct change in the level of environmental awareness and community expectations about the practice. We are responding by successfully promoting and implementing proactive changes in industry practices. PEBA and our members do not support or facilitate the release of helium balloons." Below is a link to the full letter that has been sent to the Indy 500 and the Council Members of the Town of Speedway.
