03.01.2022 I’m going to attempt to explain why shoes should come off your horse when it has laminitis and especially when it is deteriorating in the shoes. This is only one of the reasons, there are others! Imagine your horses’ hoof as a trampoline. The SPRINGS are the lamina. ... The mat is the sole. The frame is the hoof wall or shoe. Above the trampoline are the inner structures of the hoof. Laminitis is when the spring is stretched and can’t hold the frame to the mat (and everything above it). See the picture of the spring which needs to be replaced because it has stretched and isn’t springy anymore. The person jumping on the trampoline represents the weight of the horse and the pedal bone pressing downwards. Can you see that when the springs are no good that it can’t bounce her back up? Putting a shoe on the frame will lift the whole lot up higher off the ground so it seems better but it’s actually putting more strain on the springs which are gradually stretching more and more because of the strain and weight. The horse seems better because its sensitive structures are lifted off the ground, meanwhile the springs go on taking all the weight. Now, imagine that we actually LOWER the trampoline and put a thick giant cushion under the mat. The cushion (and the ground pressure) stops the person from falling through the mat. The cushion and the lowering closer to the ground now takes weight OFF the springs. Now the springs (lamina) have pressure off them, they can grow in a new connection WITHOUT stretching because the pressure is spread across the whole of the bottom of the trampoline the mat and the frame - and the person can’t fall through anymore. You can’t replace the springs while there is weight on them! This is the aim of a barefoot trim with boots and pads
02.01.2022 Hallie being School pony today. She is great for teaching riders how to whisper their aids as she’s very sensitive. #ridinglessons #arabianponylove #toolsinthetoolbox #sportscar
02.01.2022 We just spent 3 days mentoring ACEHP student Naomi. Lovely days spent, talking, trimming, riding, sharing and more talking! Naomi worked really hard and has a bright future as a trimmer to compliment her bodywork skills. #australianhooftrimmers #teaching #barefoottrimmers #lovebeingselfemployed
01.01.2022 2 lessons in the rain today. Poppy’s first time off the lunge and Morgan was jumping- no pics because it was raining too much and I didn’t want my phone to get wet! Great achievements for both riders #ridinglessons #startthemright #toolsinthetoolbox #skillsforsuccess #norwegianfjordhorsesofinstagram #palanaarnstein #rainiswelcome
01.01.2022 A lot of lessons end with cooling Arnstein down while riding bareback. This skill is so useful in developing balance and core strength. Morgan did so well today, learned the beginning of leg yeilding, worked on neat transitions and finished with jumping and a bareback trot.
