20.01.2022 IF YOU WORK IN AGED CARE AND WANT TO DISCUSS COVID-19 IN A SAFE CLOSED GROUP (Doctor, Nurse, Manager, PCA or other) JOIN OUR PROF JOE COVID 19 AGE CARE FACEBOOK GROUP https://www.facebook.com/groups/profjoecovid19agedcare https://www.smh.com.au//why-the-pm-is-wrong-to-push-for-vi We want to open up Aged Care. Everyone does. That part is obvious. But we also need the Federal government to ensure it is going to be as safe as possible for residents when we do so.... The Government needs to fix years of Aged Care under staffing and under resourcing in a matter of days. There is no quick fix here. We need to fix the very foundations of Australian Aged Care. It is the only hope we have to be able to protect our Residents from Covid 19 and to enable facilities to open up without putting residents at risk at the same time from sub-optimal processes that can encourage the spread of the infection through the home, with deadly consequences - as we are witnessing right now. We need to make sure that our residents are kept safe with appropriate screening, treatment and care. This will be hard in a system already suffering from poor staffing, resourcing and care delivery as evidenced by the Royal Commission. So what we need everyone to do is to ask the government to increase their focus on staffing, resourcing and providing doctors with appropriately developed guidelines to care for our Aged Care Residents. Very very rapidly. Because our system was already in trouble before Covid even reached our shores. The government needs to be completely transparent with the public about where the new infections are happening, what's being done about them, and how successful these measures are being to actually protect our residents. This is how we will trust that they are taking all the measures that will make a difference to saving lives. This is not a time for complacency in Aged Care. There's no point just asking for things to be opened up - that's the obvious part. Ask that the government opens up the facilities after making sure everything has been done to support them first. We need something that has rarely occurred in the past. Fast, meaningful, transparent and truly effective improvements in the care provided to residents of Aged Care Facilities, that actually hits the ground of the Aged Care homes and doesn't get lost in translation. https://www.smh.com.au//why-the-pm-is-wrong-to-push-for-vi

14.01.2022 We need more attention given by the world to what makes Aged Care Facilities particularly vulnerable to Covid-19. This isn't just about 'affecting the elderly', it's something to do with the specific nature of 'Aged Care Facilities' - the housing arrangements? The buildings? The staffing? More needs to be done to understand this phenomenon, so that we can also adopt a strategy to protect these residents. The story of Covid-19 around the world is a significantly selective eff...ect on Aged Care facilities. What is that specifically, that thing that makes Aged Care facilities vulnerable? Even with low rates of community spread, aged care facilities can be significantly effected (see for example our Australian experience, where a tiny community incidence has managed to significantly disproportionately effect aged care facilities). That degree of disproportionate effect in Australia resembles the other areas of the world discussed in this article. Our facilities are just as vulnerable. We have simply benefited from a lower community incidence. The world, and Australians, owe it to our Aged Care population to look into why. Spreading the word about this is the only way we can achieve this community focus. https://edition.cnn.com//elderly-care-homes-cor/index.html Prateek

07.01.2022 If you work in Aged Care - Join our closed Prof Joe Covid 19 Aged Care Group - The Prime Minister has said we should lift the extra lock downs in Aged Care Facilities. We agree, but those lock downs have come out of fears that the system is not prepared or supported post the Royal Commission's Findings. Furthermore, deaths in Aged Care Facilities account for up to 50% of the deaths worldwide, from a population near 1% of the population. PM - let's lift the lock downs, with... you showing us how you are rapidly fixing the system to prevent deaths in Aged Care from Covid-19. - To listen to the other episodes of the Prof Joe Covid-19 Podcast, visit www.profjoe.com.au See more
