While to some of our regular followers it may appear that we've had a couple of false starts, we've cleared the cob-webs and dead wood and are now getting into sec...ond gear.. 21.01.2022 Google is making changes and why you should consider SSL for your website Do you have a website but no secure certificate (SSL)? If you do, then Google is going to mark you as UNSAFE, and people won't go to or buy from your site. Google announced that in January 2017 it will start flagging sites as "unsecure" if your site is not protected by SSL. This will only happen in Google Chrome if this is your browser or choice, but it's only a matter of time before all browsers make t...he change. But I hear you saying "I don't have a shopping cart, my customers don't have to login to my site". Previously, any site that was selling goods or services required "SSL" to give reassurance to their customers that the site was secure and their credit card details would be dealt with according to strict privacy laws. However now, it's no longer just shopping sites that will require SSL. Soon, any website that does not have an SSL will be marked by Google as UNSECURE. Will this impact your site and your ability to sell your products or services. We can fix this for you. Want to know more, contact us... [email protected] 1300-720-703 Progress Technology

15.01.2022 We’re Back! And More Ready than Ever to Help Your Business Grow.. I want to begin by saying, from all of us at Progress Technology, thank you. The patience, understanding, and support during this period have been a true gift and we feel so fortunate to work with such amazing clients.... The past few months have been difficult as my family has dealt with the death of my father, who, like so many of our loved ones today, fell ill to cancer. While death is always a very difficult process, it also serves a purpose. It forces us all to come face to face with our own limits, and to truly understand what matters. What do we value? From a business perspective, it has served as an impetus for renewal and has given us a deeper appreciation for the role we play as a customer-focused Managed IT Services company. This digital modern era is vibrant, complex and constantly evolving. For the businesses out there on the front lines, solving problems, creating innovation, products and services that people need today to enjoy the quality of life we have all become so accustomed to we are honored to be the behind-the-scenes, yet essential, IT support network. We love knowing that we are making a difference for you. From the convenience of having a virtual IT manager, the peace of mind that comes from working with our knowledgeable tech consultants, experienced project and account managers our goal our purpose is to prop today’s amazing businesses up for success. We get to keep this tech-inspired world functioning like a well-oiled machine, driving forward the progress, insights, and revelations that are shaping our era. Life may have forced us to pause, as it does for all of us from time to time. Within that moment of reflection, we were given the opportunity to renew. These past few weeks we have been working together as a team, coming together to redefine our purpose and to come up with ways to make our services even better. We are also in the process now of reaching out to clients, getting feedback, and ensuring that as we move forward, we are capable of providing more to Queensland and Victorian businesses than even before. We are really excited about our re-emergence and look forward to connecting with your company. Progress Technology is back!
14.01.2022 What's on my mind? Security! With the revelation over the last couple of days about the hacking and theft of personal information from the dubious dating site Ashley Madison, it got me thinking about the safety of our clients data, and more specifically how they view our policies on security. Are you prepared for the day where your personal information is stolen? We should not kid ourselves that it won't happen to us, but more, we should be prepared on how we will respond an...d what steps we have taken to mitigate this risk - Secure Data means: CONFIDENTIALITY - INTEGRITY - AVAILABILITY Want to know more? 11.01.2022 An item to note for those that shopped at Dick Smith stores. As part of the wind-up of assets, receivers are planning to try and sell the retailer's customer databases as well as other intellectual properties held by the company. An update after the initial announcement made assurances that every customer on the database would be contacted and given the option to opt-out and not have their information included as part of the sale. Intellectual information such as these can b...e valuable to other businesses giving them details of shoppers A question that should be asked, when a company you do business with goes into administration or files for bankruptcy, is what happens to your details held by that company. Fortunately Australian privacy laws do hold companies accountable in these sort of situations. See http://www.itnews.com.au//dick-smith-receiver-puts-custome For information or advice about your IT needs give our team a call at Quantum Computers 07-5530-4883 or if you’re one of our Managed IT Support clients, call Progress Technology on 1300-720-703. 11.01.2022 Thursday's Tech Tip # 4 Welcome to Thursday's Tech Tip. Looking once again at Windows 10 and a couple a short and sweet tips: 1. The universal Maps app in Windows 10, unlike the Windows 8 Maps app, now has an offline maps feature. Click the Settings (gear) icon in Maps, then select Download or update maps under the Offline maps header.... You’ll be taken to the Settings app, where you’ll be able to select which continent, then country whose offline map you’d like to download. (If you’re downloading a Australian map, you'll also have to select which state you need or you can download all states). Helpfully, Windows tells you how large the download will be before you start downloading the maps. 2. With the Windows 10 November Update, you can now save apps to external storage or secondary drives by going to Start > Settings > System > Storage after you’ve connected the storage to your PC, be it a thumb drive or SD card. From there, click the drop-down menu under New apps will save to and select the external storage drive you want to use. This useful for those using Windows tablets running Windows 10 or Surface hybrids that have SD card expansion. Remember, as always, if you need help with any of your technology, give our team a call at Quantum Computers 07-5530-4883 or if you’re one of our Managed IT Support clients, call Progress Technology on 1300-720-703. 09.01.2022 Just a brief news update today for those Apple Phone users running IOS 9. On Friday Apple issued a small patch for its IOS 9 mobile operating system that addresses a problem that caused apps to hang after users tapped on hyperlinks in web pages. This update will take you from version 9.3 to 9.3.1. The bug appears to have been introduced in one of the first versions of Apple's iOS 9 last year. It affects the new Universal Links feature that allows developers to redirect users... who click on hyperlinks pointing to websites to installed apps, bypassing the Safari web browser. So if any of you have been experiencing this problem go to Settings->General->Software Update and see if you have any updates available. It is recommended that you have your phone connected to your power adapter before installing the update. 08.01.2022 An interesting news item for those using Apple computers, with the report of the first functioning ransomware attacking Apple's Mac computers. For those of you that are unfamiliar with what ransomware is, it is a form of malware that either immediately or after a pre-determined time encrypts the files on your computer, with the attackers then requiring a payment before providing a key with which to unlock your files. This type of malware has been around on Windows PC's for so...me time, but as already mentioned this is the first known report of this targeting Apple Mac computers. One of the key ways of protecting yourself against such attacks whether on Apple or Windows, in addition to up to date anti-virus and malware software, is backups of your data. Backing up to an external drive, while generally a good idea, is not enough as this type of malware will not only encrypt the data on your computer but also any data on connected devices. In this case an offline or cloud backup option is worth investigating. See http://www.itnews.com.au//apple-mac-users-targeted-in-firs For information or advice about your security or backup needs give our team a call at Quantum Computers 07-5530-4883 or if you’re one of our Managed IT Support clients, call Progress Technology on 1300-720-703. 08.01.2022 Windows10 - Should I or Shouldn't I? With the imminent release of Windows10 tomorrow, many of our clients are asking if they should upgrade or wait. The short version: wait.... The longer version: If any new operating system there are many changes. An operating system is a complicated animal, and when much of the internal workings changes, there is no way to know 100% what effect that is going to have on the billions of computers in the world. Sony today have advised that users on Sony hardware should all hold off upgrading as they won;t have drivers ready until November! This is good coming from Sony, but what about all the other hardware and software providers? The up-shot: if you need your computer to stay working, and couldn't stand computer problems that an upgrade might "potentially" unleash, stay safe, don't upgrade yet. Want to know more? 07.01.2022 Hi Followers, Today i had a client call and ask what 'Ransomeware' was. A great question, and the simple answer is that its some nasty piece of software that blocks access to your computer system until you pay them some money! Then they promise to "unlock" it (sure they will). Don't be fooled, NEVER pay to have your data unlocked, and more importantly protect yourself before this situation happens.... (Did you know that at least 7 Gold Coast companies have been stung by Ransome-Ware in recent months?) Not sure how to protect yourself? We can tell you, and if you're a small business, we can give your computer systems a free health check! Ask one of our engineer now [email protected]
06.01.2022 Hi to all our followers. This week there will be no posts. This week our mum, brothers and sisters lost our dad to cancer. While my family is sad and will grieve, i thought it a better idea instead of posting you a tech tip, I'd draw your attention to the disease of cancer in all its forms.... Take a moment to do a google search on cancer research for your local country and maybe contribute a few bucks to the research. Go to cancer.org.au and please do read their site for 5-minutes. You don't have to do anything else but read and take a moment to think about the loved ones in your family and if cancer might be affecting them... A week to think about our families... Thanks Russell Managing Director, Progress Technology/Quantum Computers

04.01.2022 Thursday's Tech Tip # 2 This week our tech tip relates to Android phones. While we all love our smart phones one downside is that the mobile data caps can be quite limited and the risk of exceeding those and incurring extra costs can be high. Your Android phone able to provide you with a warning when you are approaching your data cap. To set this up:... 1. Go to settings->Data Usage 2. First click on the date dropdown and change your usage cycle to reflect when your new billing month starts. So for example it may commence on the 12th of each month, so you would set it to that. 3. Once you have set the date you will see on this screen a graph with a warning bar that you can move up or down. We would suggest setting this warning at least 500mb less than your data cap. So for example if you get 2.0GB of mobile data a month then set the warning to 1.5GB or less. Please note, as it indicates on the setting page itself, your service provider may measure data usage differently so be aware that this is a general guide only. Remember if you need help with any of your technology, give our great team a call at Quantum Computers 07-5530-4883 or if you’re one of our Managed IT Support clients, call Progress Technology on 1300-720-703. 03.01.2022 Thursday's Tech Tip # 3 Hello all and welcome to Thursday's Tech Tip (albeit a little late this week). After our Android tip last week, this week we will look at a few short tips for iPhone users. The first one is for those users of the iPhone 6s Plus that allows for easier one handed use: 1. Double-touch (not tap) on the home button and the entire screen will shift down so you can reach the top without changing your grip.... 2. Next tip: When you wish to redial in the Phone app, press the green call button on the keypad screen to make the last dialed number appear. 3. And lastly for iOS 9 users: You have a long day ahead and no opportunity to recharge your phone, then enable low-power mode: - Go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode and slide the toggle to on. This will disable push email, stop apps from refreshing in the background, and perform a few other mods that will extend your iPhone’s battery life. Remember if you need help with any of your technology, give our great team a call at Quantum Computers 07-5530-4883 or if you’re one of our Managed IT Support clients, call Progress Technology on 1300-720-703. WE LISTEN. WE SOLVE. YOU PROGRESS.
