22.01.2022 || SFL || Spent the weekend at the StrongFirst Lifter certification. . A hugely rewarding learning experience. It was 3 days of intense focus mentally and physically. There were plenty of laughs to go around too. .... I undertook the SFL to further my understanding of barbell training. Lucky for me the head instructor, @drmichaelhartle, was a chiropractor and champion power lifter. His knowledge and experience brought the content to life. . We went an inch wide but a mile deep. We covered mobility, set up, tension, alignment, and execution of major barbell lifts. We also delved deep into programming for strength. . The barbell is a hugely popular tool for developing strength in athletes of all levels. Expanding my knowledge on this ubiquitous tool is already helping me do my job as a sports chiropractor and educator better. . 07.01.2022 I Which Bell is Best? I Tough question. The answer is it depends... Both of these bells are 12kg, yet they are quite different in size and shape.... The bell on the left is a pro-grade bell and is typically a GS (Girvoy/Kettlebell Sport) style bell. The bell on the right is a classic style bell, traditionally used in hard style training. Hard style is what we have completed our certifications in. The prograde bells are all uniform in size and shape despite their weight. These are the ones you will most often see in gyms. On the other hand, the classic bells increase in size as the weight increases. Realistically, either style of kettlebell would work well in pretty much any situation. It really comes down to personal preference. We did most of our training with hard style bells, so for our own use, these are the ones we prefer. HOWEVER, for the purposes of rehab and movement training we prefer the prograde bell. Since they are all uniform in size, it is much easier for the athlete to progress in weight. Also, the prograde bell height is similar to that of a barbell with bumpers on. This makes it a more standard height and is likely easier for athletes to pick up off the ground in such movements as a deadlift. What style bell do you prefer and why? While I do think there can be time for isolation exercises, and in general the roll of the barbell in developing athleticism is overstated, the physical therapy community classically undercooks its attempts at loading the injured athlete. Rippetoe makes some great points. ... Think System, Not Components of a System So, I have a question. Several, actually. Why are we, as an entire species, still so fascinated with individual muscle groups? Why are we so happy when we discover, say, in Gray's Anatomy, the origin, insertion, and innervation of a muscle belly, and then immediately find a use for this knowledge in the weight room? "Wow! Look at my flexor digitorum profundus firing! Gimme that 3-pound dumbbell!" Why can't we, as a species, see the value of systems over the components of systems? This inadequacy has many ramifications. For instance, why do we continue to listen to people who tell us that problems which may arise subsequent to injuries must be corrected by isolating the injured part and working it separately, when they don't function that way when they're healthy? Why do the arbiters of all things exercise the members of the physical therapy profession insist that injuries must be rehabbed in a way that's completely different from the way that the uninjured component functions? Why must they divide the body into its constituent components, figure out a way to make that isolated component function all by itself, and then base their rehabilitation exercises on this faulty analysis? When does the "rotator cuff" externally rotate the upper arm? When your physical therapist hands you the 3-pound dumbbell and carefully explains how to do it. What do these little muscles do the rest of the time? Sleep? Play poker?
