25.01.2022 Women have told us they are concerned for their safety as brothel managers arrange apartments for them to work from during the Covid-19 lockdown. The lack of other options and supports for women, are driving some to risk their health and possible fines to continue in the underground sex industry. #projectrespect #projectrespectmelbourne #projectrespectaustralia #advocacy #community #nonprofit #womensupportingwomen #women

24.01.2022 Project Respect is proud to stand with over 200 organisations and be the lead author on trafficking section of the Universal Periodic Review of Australia's Human Rights Scorecard. We recommend that Australia must promote a human rights-based approach and ensure that the rights of victims, including to redress and economic and social support, are protected. Australia must also bring its trafficking laws into conformity with international obligations. #ausUPR #projectrespect #projectrespectmelbourne #projectrespectaustralia #womenmatter #women #trafficking #advocacy #community #nonprofit

23.01.2022 This morning, Assistant Minister Wood launched Australia's second National Action Plan to Combat Modern Slavery (NAP), in Canberra. Project Respect was fortunate to be invited, and watched the launch virtually. We were consulted a number of times during the development of the NAP, and continue to consult in the development of the monitoring and evaluation framework for the NAP. We are heartened to see a renewed commitment to supporting and protecting survivors of modern slavery, and, more importantly, a commitment to ensuring the voice of survivors are included. #humantrafficking #modernslavery #victimsandsurvivors https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au//nap-combat-modern-slavery-

22.01.2022 How can you help during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence? While events and activities for the 16 Days of Activism look a little different this year, activism can still take place from home. Add your signature to e-petition 279, which seeks to request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to conduct an inquiry into police intervention in stalking and domestic violence cases. This can ensure that earlier and stricter intervention is in place... prior to a crime being committed, after recent events saw a 23-year-old woman’s life cut short by her stalker. You can sign the petition online here: https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/index.php View the Respect Victoria Call It Out campaign toolkit, for information on how individuals and organisations can get involved in the 16 Days of Activism: https://www.respectvictoria.vic.gov.au//Toolkit_16%20Days% As always, donations toward Project Respect are greatly appreciated in order to continue the current work that we do supporting, and advocating for women who are involved in the sex industry, including women who are trafficked. 21.01.2022 Today, Eid El-Adhar is being celebrated in a very different way. We know this is normally a big day spent with family and friends and so our thoughts are with those celebrating in isolation. 21.01.2022 On the 24th of November we held our Annual General Meeting, in which the 2020 Annual Report was approved for circulation. The report is a celebration of all that Project Respect has been able to achieve in the previous year, despite the up’s and down’s that we have all had to face during 2020. Project Respect’s 2020 Annual Report is available for viewing here: https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net//ProjectRespect-Annu It is important to keep in mind that behind the number...s displayed, are women who have turned to Project Respect because, more often than not, they have had nowhere else to go. We strive to always be there for women who need us, however ultimately, barriers should not exist for women to live free from violence. If you wish to donate to Project Respect, to continue supporting women who are involved in the sex industry, including women who are trafficked, you can do so here: https://www.projectrespect.org.au/donate_now Finally, we wanted to thank our supporters for all of your work, help, dedication and donations over the past year. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.

19.01.2022 This week is NAIDOC week and Project Respect celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Project Respect works to advocate for women around Australia from our workplace in Naarm. We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners on the land we work, the Wurundjeri people and pay our respects to the elders past, present and emerging.... We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded so we are on stolen lands. This always was and always will be Aboriginal Land. This 2020 National NAIDOC Poster, Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander man. #naidoc2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #projectrespect #womenmatter

19.01.2022 It is National Homeless Week this week and almost 120,000 Australians are without a home every night. 15.01.2022 Today marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Australia continues to be a destination country for trafficking, as well as a country that sees trafficking from within it's own borders. In 2019, the Global Slavery Index estimated that there were 15,000 people in slavery in Australia.... Project Respect continues to provide support to survivors of trafficking for sexual exploitation, who are often not captured in government statistics. #projectrespect #projectrespectmelbourne #projectrespectaustralia #advocacy #feminist #womensupportingwomen #community #nonprofit #trafficking #humantrafficking #blueheart #blueheartcampaign #endhumantrafficking

14.01.2022 Death by strangulation is increasing. "Men who kill women are increasingly using the sex game gone wrong excuse as a contemporary variation on the traditional crime of passion defence." As the research in this article indicates:... - At least 18 women have died in an alleged 'sex game gone wrong' in the last five years. - Of the 82 women interviewed about their experience of violence during sex, 45 had experienced non-consensual strangulation, choking or pressure on the neck from a partner or ex-partner. A total of 32 had experienced it from someone they were dating. When we outreach to brothels, women inform us of clients who engage in non-consensual strangulation acts and that they aren’t supported to report the assaults. #projectrespect #projectrespectaustralia #womenmatter #feminist #community #support #nonprofit #advocacy #theguardian #wecantconsenttothis

13.01.2022 The ninth IDC Report covering the 2016-2017 period has recently been tabled to government. As a member of the National Roundtable on Human Trafficking and Slavery, we are proud to say our work is included in the IDC Report. 150 cases of Human Trafficking and Slavery were referred to the AFP.... Only 13 slavery related prosecutions were before the courts and only seven of these began in that time-frame. Project Respect delivered intensive case-management to 15 women who experienced trafficking (and an additional 28 women in the sex industry) and 4 of those women were at risk of being deported despite experiencing trafficking. Project Respect has and will continue to advocate for better protections for women who have experienced trafficking to find the justice they deserve. 08.01.2022 The AIC has released data on the prevalence of domestic violence among women during the COVID-19 pandemic. It shows that that women are experiencing a higher rate of domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic than they were before it began and that a large proportion of women have experienced violence from their partner for the first time. The report does not cover anything to do with the sex industry or trafficking but data indicates that of the 15,000 responses, 2.2% w...ere forced to take part in sexual activity against their will. 06.01.2022 We recently hosted our first online fundraising event titled Modern Slavery in Australia, with guest speakers Fiona McLeod AO S.C. and Professor Jennifer Burn. It was a wonderful day and a great discussion around modern slavery in Australia and the impact on victim-survivors. Until the end of the year, we'd like to offer our supporters, who did not attend the live event, access to the recording and transcript of the discussion for any donation amount above $5, to help raise f...unds for our essential work. The ticketed event (originally $25) brought together two of Australia's longest-standing, leading experts in the field, to discuss modern slavery in Australia, and the support needs of victim/survivors. Through the event, we were able to raise funds for our work to women in the sex industry in accessing essential services such as legal, financial and housing support. If you were unable to attend on the day and would like to support our work and receive valuable advocacy resources, please consider making a tax-deductible donation above $5 to help women in the sex industry including women trafficked, and gain access to our recording. You can donate via this link: https://bit.ly/ProjectRespectDonate Your donations are critical to keeping our work alive - that's why we try to give back whenever we can. If you do decide to donate, we hope you find the information in the webinar insightful, and gain a better understanding of the work you are helping to support. 06.01.2022 The sex industry is not pandemic-proof and the women we are supporting are experiencing extreme financial hardship. We are seeing trends of women questioning whether they want to return to the sex industry as Victoria opens up as some are trying to transition into other employment options. Transitioning from the sex industry includes its own inherent challenges and with secure work in a post-lockdown climate being unattainable for many, we need increased funding for support s...ervices and JobSeeker for this to be possible.
