03.01.2022 It’s been a rough summer in the world of motorsports. On June 30, we lost HRL driver Mathieu Daoust in a racing accident on the St Lawrence. A week later on Ju...ly 6th Rick Beatty was killed in Madison. Steven Ralph Wessels II died on the Snake River on August 24th, Thursday August 27th Jessie Combs was killed when the North America Eagle crashed in Oregon. Antonie Hubert was killed in an F-2 accident in Spa, Belgium on Saturday August 31th. While none of the five were close friends, they were all racers, so they were all members of my tribe. They understood grabbing a quick meal of cold pizza from a grease stained cardboard box at 2am while you struggle to find just a fraction of a second better acceleration. They knew about long travel days followed by early morning media events when you are so sleepy that your eyelids feel like they are made out of sand paper. They had calendars where the months were replaced by place names. When the rest of the world thinks that the second month of the year is February, racers know its real name is Daytona and that month in summer, when everyone else is celebrating the 4th of July? We call it Madison or maybe Gold Cup. The last month before school starts? Of course that one is Seafair. If you’re a racer, you’ve got that travel bag sitting next to your bed that has literally never been unpacked. Its always got a couple changes of clothes, some toiletries and of course a few crumpled boxes of foam ear protection. (You use those when you’re in the cockpit but they also come in handy on long plane rides when you absolutely need to sleep.) I’m sure that Antonie, Mathieu, Rick, Steve and Jessie had all eaten more than their fill of cheap hotel breakfasts and drank way too much lousy coffee from those tiny hotel room coffee pots. But they understood the upside too, not the autograph sessions or the TV interviews, but that amazing invincible feeling that you get when everything on the race course comes together. When you are driving to some internal beat, and you feel like you are a musical instrument and god is playing a long, intricate solo on you. Every movement is perfection and the only regret is that you know that soon you are going to run low on fuel and have to pull off the course and then as you slow down you will become just a human again. Godspeed my dear friends, you will be missed.

02.01.2022 See you all there!
