24.01.2022 Fish Creek has a new fish! Originally designed by Melbourne artist, Ian Bracegirdle, for the opening Yarra River flotilla at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Two fish were lured to Fishy by former councillor, Nigel Hutchinson-Brooks. Local artist/sculptors, Andrew McPherson and Ray Jones then amalgamated the frames and applied a beautiful new skin, tail & dorsal fins made from road signs and sheet metal. Grant Flather and Adam Bright constructed the base, and Charlie Thomso...n brought in his crane to lift it all into place. Big thank you to you all. Dont miss it if you can!! (And you cant!). And in more fish news, Colin Suggetts beautiful, beloved fish sculpture that has sat atop the Fish Creek Hotel for the past 25 years, has now been fully renovated by Colin. It will be back in its spot on the hotel roof within the next couple of weeks, ready for the kids to point at excitedly over the summer hols.

24.01.2022 The Fish comes down today! Colin Suggetts famous mullet atop the Fish Creek Hotel comes down for gutting and re-skinning, before being released back onto the roof to live again!!

23.01.2022 ACCLAIMED SINGER ZULYA TO PERFORM AT WARATAH HILLS IN FEBRUARY Multi award-winning Zulya Kamalova - a leading proponent of Tatar and Russian music - will perfor...m at Waratah Hills Vineyard on Saturday 25th February. Zulya is regarded as one of the most versatile and accomplished vocalists on the world music scene today. The Prom Coast Arts Council is presenting Zulya in concert at the Waratah Hills Vineyard Cellar Door in Fish Creek. Zulya began performing publicly at the age of nine throughout Tatarstan-Udmurtia in central Russia, where she was born. Having studied both music and language at the university level, Zulya chose to relocate to Australia in 1991, inspired by our reputation for diversity, and hoping to share her music and culture here. She has released eight albums to date, including the ARIA-nominated Elusiive, and, together with her band The Children of the Underground, The Waltz of Emptiness, which on its release in Europe in 2005, spent 16 weeks in the European world music charts - a feat no other Australian album has ever achieved. Although she is well-known in Australia, Zulyas performances of her stunning blend of traditional and original music have recently been enchanting audiences from Serbia to Siberia, Luxembourg to Moscow, Tatarstan to Helsinki and almost everywhere in between. Zulyas albums feature traditional and original songs in her distinctive Tatar style but with unusual instrumentation, presenting the traditional music from a new perspective. Several tracks from her albums have been included in various compilations such as Putumayos Music from the Tea Lands and Dreamland along with many others. Zulyas work has featured regularly on national radio and television to high acclaim, and she has been awarded "Female Artist of the Year" at the World Music Awards and Best World Music Artist by Australian Live Music Awards. In the recent years Zulya has continued to explore new directions. In 2014 she presented Evolution, Revolution and the Mail Order Bride, a theatre piece, which she wrote and performed in. In 2012-13 she collaborated with a highly acclaimed electronic artist OMFO (The Netherlands), which resulted in her first sci-fi experimental pop album Kosmostan (released in Australia in 2015). Zulya has just finished composing music for Snow White, a joint production between Opera Queensland and La Boite Theatre in Brisbane. This piece written in collaboration with Suzie Miller and Lindy Hume premiers at Brisbane Festival in September 2016. Zulyas performance will start at 7.30 pm, but come along and enjoy a glass of wine and food platter before the show. Tickets will cost $30 and will be available from the usual outlets in Fish Creek and Foster. Details will be announced shortly, so check back here again soon.

16.01.2022 Venus Bay artist, Colin Suggett, thought his fish sculpture might survive a few months on top of the Fish Creek Hotel. He certainly didnt think it would be the...re decades later. Although the fish has survived, it needs substantial maintenance to ensure it remains perched on the pub as one of the states best-known regional landmarks. Over the past couple of years, Prom Coast Arts Council has been collecting money in tins placed around local businesses. Your donations, along with a contribution from the Lyrebird Arts Council, are now sufficient to enable Colin to carry out restorative work on his fish. Next Monday (22/8), the fish will be taken down from the Fish Creek Hotel roof and trucked to Colins workshop where hell start work on refreshing this much-loved icon of South Gippsland. Thanks to all of you whove contributed to the collection tins, and to the businesses whove helped with this project.

Prize, appearing on the panel in the PCA forum focused on portraiture back in 2012, as well as his work with youth and the Wonthaggi laneway project. Tom is very much a free spirit, especially when it comes to his art. He has some very interesting views on art and life and is driven to share these views because he feels there is not enough love in art and life generally. Below is just a small selection of statements that Tom has provided PCA with in the lead up to his talk. This will be an invigorating and edifying talk! LOVE IS THE GOAL, ART IS THE GIFT WRAPPING Observations and points of view that support my art making. The Art World - The Art World wont make you happy / Wheres the Love? Fun? Playfulness? Art Theory - Art theory is Art hate Artists - Nave artists are pure artists - they produce art with integrity, without needing external validation / Children aged between 3 7 are the best artists Experiencing the art of others - There are no bad (or good) artworks / I dont read artwork titles, artists statements and often dont find out who the artist is Making Art - There are no bad (or good) artworks / Art is pointless if it is just about demonstrating human skill, talent or cleverness. These arent gifts honouring the miracle of life / Artists have an opportunity to tell the secrets of a communitys heart Exhibiting/Entering Competitions- Going Public - Let go of needing validation / The bigger the artist statement the greater the doubt Love - Embrace the here and now / Ultimately, love is the goal. The artwork is the gift wrapping Come along to hear Tom speak, to ask questions and to open yourself to new experiences. (Photo of Tom Murray-White by Kerry Spokes)

11.01.2022 A SPECIAL PREVIEW of the beautifully restored Stunned Mullet - local artist Colin Suggetts much-loved sculpture that sits atop the Fish Creek Hotel. A couple of years ago, when the fish started to look a bit worn, Prom Coast Arts Council coordinated a restoration project with Colin and the Peavey brothers, who run the hotel. With hundreds of small donations from locals and visitors, along with substantial donations from the Lyrebird Arts Council and the Fish Creek Tea Cosy F...estival, Colin has been able to renovate and re-skin the mullet and it will soon be released back onto the hotel roof. THE HISTORY OF THE STUNNED MULLET. In 1989 Colin Suggett was one of 12 artists invited to be involved in a group art show organised by the Riddoch Gallery, Mount Gambier to be held in the Mount Gambier lime stone quarries and titled The Quarries - An Archaeology. As part of his larger installation titled Fishy Story Colin built the 5.6 mtr. fish on site, using a generator for power. At the completion of the 3-week exhibition the fish was brought to South Gippsland and purchased by the then owner of the Fish Creek Hotel, Rob Moncur, for installation on the buildings parapet and re-titled The Stunned Mullet. While some locals thought the fish should be propped up like an advertising device this was not the intention of the artist, who wanted it to remain as a sculptural object, appropriating the building as part of the artwork. It refers to the old mythology of fish raining from the skies, Colin says. Although the fish may be seen by some as just another Australian big thing like the big banana, Colin hopes that its context and casual positioning transcends that description. Is it a very big fish or a very little building?

09.01.2022 The Fish Creek fish is down and tucked safely away in artist, Colin Suggetts, workshop at Venus Bay. 26 years ago Colin supervised installation of the fish on top of the Fish Creek Hotel. He had no idea how long it could withstand the elements. Now, after weathering two-and-a-half decades, the fish needs some renovation. The Prom Coast Arts Council worked with the town community, and with Colin and publicans, Terry and Kevin Peavey, to raise the necessary funds for the job.... Colin is hoping to have renovations finished and the much-loved mullet back to its familiar spot on the hotel roof within 4-8 weeks, depending on how much structural work needs doing.... But for now, the Fish Creek fish is on ice...
