It wanted people to love them. This is why the company organized an online competition for the chance to win a $12,500 golden Bling Mac. The funny yet luxurious 18k gold ring featured all the layers of a Big Mac, picked out in diamonds, sapphires, and other precious stones. Whoever wanted to win it had a simple task go to Twitter and pledge their love for the Big Mac. They had to use the #BlingMacContest hashtag and write a love letter to the Big Mac. McDonald’s would award the Bling Ring to the most creative tweet. Needless to say, many McDonald’s fans wanted to get their hands on that ring. If nothing else, its sheer monetary value made it very appealing. The campaign was a massive success. Online engagement skyrocketed and McDonald’s created a fun atmosphere for many. And the launch of the new Big Mac sizes was equally successful. This goes to show that thinking outside the box can take promo products to a whole new level.
