25.01.2022 Helping your clients relax into the process is a first step in any prompted photoshoot, and this prompt also serves to help you work out the best approach for your session. With the right sequence of prompts you can take your clients from quiet and intimate, to high energy, big movement shots, and this prompt helps you work out your starting point. Avoid the awkward by aligning your prompted session with their personalities, and capture what we’re here to shoot: real emotions and moments between real people.

24.01.2022 It’s a fact: some young people love being in front of the camera, and others don’t. It’s also a beautiful way to document their interests and skills, which will be appreciated by parents and the young person alike. Read the whole prompt now.

23.01.2022 Once you’ve used my tutorial to make yourself a handy bokeh modifier, it’s time to start shooting. All you have to do to get started is cover the lens with the modifier, position your subject in front of some twinkly lights, focus and shoot. Here’s some tips to start your experimentation.

22.01.2022 This week’s photo prompt is Family Trees. Capturing details to illustrate heritage and what’s come before is a beautiful way to honor and remember deep family connections. Look for the similarities between family members, and highlight them. Family Trees: - Faces: Line up two faces side-by-side, with eyes aligned, get back with a long lens and crop tight so each face is bisected. Capture the same angle cropped tight around a feature. - Hands: Stack hands on top of each other,... fan out or interlace fingers. Contrast chubby baby hands with parent/grandparent hands. Hold hands together to show wedding rings and engagement rings. Have everyone place hands in a line on something significant like a special tree. - Feet: Have child sit on parent’s lap and shoot from above to capture the legs and feet. Shoot down with child standing between parent’s feet, and from ground level. Line up in order of age, e.g. grandfather, father, son. Try just all the kids, just all the adults, etc. Try barefoot and with shoes on. 21.01.2022 I’ve been using Lightroom on my smartphone and computer for about six months. There’s a lot to love about Adobe’s cloud version of Lightroom: the ability to import on my computer, then edit and export on my phone being the major draw card for me. But it’s not all good news. I’m a big fan of Lightroom Classic, and there are a few notable absences in Lightroom which frustrate me: https://prmt.cc/sixfeatures

20.01.2022 When you’ve got some space between wedding bookings (or, I don’t know, a global pandemic cancels every wedding in your calendar), a styled photoshoot is a great strategy for connecting with local wedding vendors, growing your portfolio and keeping your skills fresh. A styled shoot can run from a short session with two models playing the role as your bride and groom, to a grand affair as elaborate as an entire wedding! Either way, here’s some quick tips to get you started on planning your next styled shoot.

20.01.2022 Is it worth having different photography brands for different clients? By the end of my first year of business, I was struggling to keep all my offerings straight. I loved working with families, weddings were exhilarating, and perhaps most of all, found great satisfaction working with creatives to produce personal brand photographs. I didn’t want to give any of them up, and niche down to one type of photography, but I felt I never knew who I was talking to in ads, on social ...media, or at networking events. The main benefit of splitting my brand is that I always know who I am talking to. I wrote a unique brand script for each business, focusing on how I help each specific ideal client meet their goals. A brand script is essential for any professional, but even more so when running multiple businesses: it’s easy to get mixed up. But it’s complicated to run three brands. There’s three of everything to keep updated: websites, Instagram accounts, Facebook pages, email lists, LinkedIn businesses, Google My Business listings, and directory listings. Three times as much content, different for each brand means a lot of content! Making decisions about the channels that give you the best traction is critical. For me, the pros are worth the cons If you’re someone who struggles when you have competing priorities, then niching down to one speciality will save you time, money and heartache. But if you’re someone who thrives on having a lot of balls in the air, then splitting your business could be for you. 19.01.2022 Feeling crafty? This easy lens modifier is a fun one for the holidays and only takes a few minutes to prepare. Bonus: Your kids will love it!

19.01.2022 This week’s photo prompt is Play to the Audience. This prompt is a fundamental one you can use to set up ground rules when working with any lifestyle photoshoot clients. It’s based around a simple directive: that you need to see their faces. Play to the Audience: Prime family to face the camera by telling them: pretend you’re a stage actor, who rarely turns their back on the audience (the camera). Have them keep in mind that all actions need to be visible to the audience... (your camera). Remind them: If you can’t see the lens, I can’t see you. This is important for unstructured large group photos, e.g. all guests shot at a wedding. Have all guests confirm that they can see the lens from their position. Remind during session: Play to the audience! Use judiciously. Don’t interrupt unnecessarily. 18.01.2022 Last week’s photo prompt was New Parent Feelings... that week just flew by, didn't it?! Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, there’s nothing like the emotion of welcoming a new baby into your family. New ways of being, new roles, and working it all out under the blanket of sleep deprivation mean that the early days can end up being more about survival than anything else! With this prompt you give parents the opportunity to reflect, adding meaning to the photos when th...ey look back in years to come. New Parent Feelings: Set parents up sitting: face each other at 45 degree angle with baby cradled between, sit side by side on bed, sit one leaning against the other (bed or couch), sit parent cross-legged with baby on lap and have other lean in. Set parents up standing: baby on chest of one and parents face each other at 45 degrees, side to side from the back with baby’s head resting on a parent’s shoulder, one parent lean against the other (hug from behind). Ask them questions: What does it mean to you to be a parent now? Tell your partner how they are doing as a Mum/Dad. What do you appreciate about each other? How have your feelings changed since before? What surprised you about parenthood? How did you feel the first time you saw your baby? 17.01.2022 Creating your own presets in Lightroom is a great way to speed up your mobile editing and achieve a consistent look to your mobile phone photos that will set your social media feed apart. 17.01.2022 A playful, subtle approach to Christmas photos will get you what you need for your family Christmas cards and give you some shots to update the photo album at the same time. Plus, it’s an easy activity to entertain the kids and enjoy some low-pressure holiday fun!

16.01.2022 When I’d been shooting for about eight years, I reached a plateau in my skills and equipment. I upgraded my original consumer camera to a pro body and replaced my kit lenses with quality ones. When I’d gotten the hang of my pro camera (which, by the way, was harder than I thought), I wanted to take my gear to the next level, but with so many options (and a limited budget), it was hard to know where to start. Should I focus on upgrading my camera to a higher model in the pro hierarchy, buy a new lens or something else? Over time, I took little steps forward in all of these. In hindsight, there was one skill which made an enormous difference to my photography.

16.01.2022 In Australia, it’s only a few short months until Year 12 students wrap up the year and move on to their next adventure. With Covid-19 throwing such a spanner in the works this year, there’s never been a better time to bring in some smiles and laughter to your next shoot with a graduating teenager. 15.01.2022 My Galaxy Note10+ comes with Samsung’s Live Focus feature for the built-in camera. Utilizing two of the phone’s triple camera system to simulate a wide aperture effect, photos taken with Live Focus have a distinct look to a standard phone snap. I use my phone to take day-to-day photos of my kids (said every parent ever) so Live Focus appeals to me. When shooting on my DSLR I almost always shoot wide open, because I love creamy bokeh and background blur. But how does it hold u...p for family photos? 14.01.2022 This week’s photo prompt is Ceremony Essentials. The ceremony is the most meaningful part of the wedding day. After all, that’s why your couple is here: to get married! It’s also the part of the day where you have to step back and take a completely documentary approach: you can’t interrupt a ceremony to ask the couple to repeat the ring exchange so you can get it from another angle, or shout for a do-over of the first kiss. If you miss it, it’s missed! This prompt gives you a... checklist of the essential moments that you should be looking for whenever you shoot a wedding ceremony. Every couple and culture is different, of course, but typically, wedding ceremonies will include some common elements. 09.01.2022 What do you do when you are stuck in a cluttered, ugly or distracting photo location for a lifestyle portrait session? Maybe it’s the only space you can photograph your bride and groom in a running-out-of-time fragment of the wedding day. Maybe you can’t change angles because you’ll lose your perfect light. Maybe it’s an in-home family session, and the home is just, well, lived in. Whatever the reason, here’s three quick strategies you can use to still capture beautiful photos. https://prmt.cc/distractinglocation

06.01.2022 When starting out as a family photographer, it’s important to photograph lots of families to build your experience and confidence. Most of us start out photographing our own families: Nieces and nephews, our own kids or our friends’ families. But at some point you have to start working with strangers, because coaxing the best out of grumpy toddlers and stressed parents is a lot trickier when you’ve just met each other for the first time five minutes ago! Here’s five easy strategies to build your portfolio and develop your skills working with unfamiliar clients.

05.01.2022 This week’s photo prompt is Let Out the Intimate. It’s designed to give couples a quiet moment of reflection during a shoot, and to share with each other some of the emotions that have prompted them to want these photos in the first place! It’s a great prompt for engagements, weddings, maternity and anniversary shoots. It works beautifully as a special moment together for a just-married couple at the end of their romantic session, before re-joining wedding guests. You could c...hoose a question they didn’t address in their wedding vows (give the gift of insight into the other’s love). 05.01.2022 The newborn days at home are a magical mix of exhaustion and incredible love, as a new family finds its feet caring for their newest member. An in-home lifestyle session is a relaxed way to document those days with more authenticity than a studio session, capturing the feel of what those days were really like for the family. Read on for ideas on poses to start with for your next newborn shoot.

05.01.2022 This week’s photo prompt is Safety First with Newborns. When working with newborns (especially in these Covid-19 times), it’s critical that you have safety at the forefront of your mind and in your dealings with the family. Reassuring nervous new parents that you know what you’re doing with their tiny, delicate human being goes a long way to helping everyone enjoy the shoot. Keep them safe while you’re photographing their adorable squish with these principles. Safety First wi...th Newborns: Visibly wash hands / use hand sanitizer before touching baby, and regularly throughout the shoot. Camera secured on a strap. Baby’s chin off her chest to keep airway clear. Support baby’s head and neck. Someone watching in arm’s reach when baby is on bed, change table, etc. Use window light or bounce flash (don’t blind baby!). Attempt poses at your skill level (see blog). Shoot in bursts and plan for lots of breaks. Comfort and love is your highest priority! 04.01.2022 When planning a prompted shoot with a couple, it’s important to consider the sequencing of prompts. You don’t have to plan every second of the shoot down to a tight schedule, but you need to have tools in your mental kit to help your clients transition within the shoot between different moods. You don’t want to bark disparate commands one after the other: Look happy! Now dance! Now get intimate! Now flail about wildly! All this will achieve is confusion and inauthentic, awkward-looking photos. Instead, have ready a transition prompt, like this week’s prompt. It helps you to get your couples from flail about wildly to get intimate in a natural, relaxed and comfortable way. Read the whole prompt below.

03.01.2022 This week’s photo prompt is Posing Individuals. Prompted photography is somewhere in the middle of the posed-documentary spectrum, taking the best parts of both posed (traditional) and documentary (or photojournalistic) photography. This prompt leans more towards the traditional posing side of the spectrum. The goal is to make slight adjustments to posture and positioning to flatter the features. Posing Individuals: Posing anyone: Straight posture is critical (imagine string ...pulling up). Check if glasses are reflecting light (tilt to fix). Remove sunglasses. Turn body away from primary light source. Turn face back into the light (short lighting). Weight on back foot. Posing feminine: Eliminate double-chin (hold apple with neck). Tilt head towards camera. Point toe. Create arm triangle; arms away from sides. Hands long and relaxed (ballerina). Posing masculine: Square shoulders; hang as if shoulders are coathanger. Cross ankle, or plant feet, or lean-and-lift. Emphasize the jawline (hold apple and use shadow). Tilt head away from camera. Squinch eyes. Give hands something to do.
