24.01.2022 Top 13 Common Words You (Maybe) Say Wrong in English LEARNING ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION English has many common words you say wrong, and that is, well, common. If you study English long enough, youll be sure to find quite a few of them, since many of these words are used in many daily conversations. Be aware that many of these words arent exactly pronounced as how theyre written, but dont worry! Some of these words are difficult to pronounce even for native speakers, but it...s always important to know how! A lot of these words dont follow any particular pattern or rule, so practice is key! There are 13 words that were going to cover, and as you practice them, youll be able to understand better why theyre easy to mispronounce. Theres a reason theyre called common words you say wrong. COMMON WORDS YOU SAY WRONG So, lets get down to the bottom of things and figure out how to pronounce these 13 commonly mispronounced words in the English language. Next to them is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) pronunciation. Almond /mnd/ Salmon /sæmn/ Etc. /et set()r/ Clothes /kloðz/ Enthusiastic /nuziæstk/ Recipe /respi/ Perfume / Cologne /prfjum/ /klon/ Debt /det/ Receipt /rsit/ Subtle /st()l/ Subtitle /sbtat()l/ Mayor /mer/ Rural /rrl/ COMMON PRONUNCIATION TRAPS These are some of these common words you say wrong in American English. Words such as Almond and Salmon are deceiving. Its tempting to pronounce the /L/ sound in both words, but its actually silent! We dont pronounce that /L/ sound in both words. Second, beware of words that look similar to each other (Recipe and Receipt). Despite their similar spellings, and despite theyre both nouns, their meanings and pronunciations are entirely different. Third, words like Debt and Subtle will NOT have the B sound. Finally, words like Rural are very difficult to pronounce, even for native speakers! Shocking, isnt it? The combination of the /r/ sounds and vowels makes this word rather unpopular, so even native speakers try to avoid saying it! One helpful tip is to stress that first syllable (RU-ral). Think of the word KangaROO. Now, use that last syllable to help you pronounce Rural (KangaROO-ral). Theres no better way to improve pronunciation than to practice it! If you know someone who is a native speaker, then ask them to help you pronounce them, or have them give you feedback on how you can improve! Keep practicing them until it becomes a habit, and remember that another good way to learn is to listen to other native speakers.
24.01.2022 Improve your pronunciation: FOCUS ON INTONATION You can get away with a lot of mistakes if you have good intonation. Did you know that its not uncommon for native speakers to be unable to pronounce the /r/ sound, tv presenters included (Jonathan Ross, Lucy Worsely). Some dialects dont use the th sound (Ireland). Some words are pronounced completely differently in different parts of the world (water, tomato). Yet native speakers have no trouble understanding all these va...riations. What we do have in common, is that we all use the same intonation patterns. Intonation provides a road map to your listener. It tells them which words carry the important information (content words) and which words are there to make the grammar correct (function words). By de-stressing the function words, you allow the content words to stand out. To improve your pronunciation, find a video clip of someone you would like to imitate and copy their intonation pattern. Focus mostly on the de-stressed words. To de-stress a word, you can make it shorter, less clear and less loud, but most importantly you must lower your pitch. Give it a go!

18.01.2022 Foreign language learners can hear the pronunciation mistakes their peers make, but fail to notice these same errors in their own speech. It's a really interesting finding that has me scratching my head. Does anyone have suggestions on how to help this? https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com//articles/74041269.cms

15.01.2022 What's the difference in pronunciation between the words "roads" and "Rhodes", "weather" and "whether", "cereal" and "serial"? The answer is: none whatsoever. They are homophones, which means they are pronounced exactly the same. Unfortunately, spelling is often misleading when it comes to pronunciation.

04.01.2022 Do you have trouble pronouncing the 'th' sound? Don't worry, so do a lot of native English speakers, i.e. Irish people. The good news is, it doesn't really matter a lot. The 'th' sound has little impact in how easy you are to understand. https://youtu.be/S-ysYMrS06M
