17.01.2022 GREAT NEWS - Gov’t Bans Banks From Delivering School Finance Programs! In my opinion this is vital to the improvement of financial literacy of future generations. I definitely would not want my children being ‘taught’ about money from a bank or financial institution that has a vested interest in promoting certain products or ways of ‘managing’ money that could embed a lifetime of money mistakes in people from a young age.... Banks are not stupid and they make billions of dollars for a reason. Programs like Dollarmites are a very clever way to market to kids and get them onboard as customers from a young age. A bit like McDonalds giving away toys in a happy meal to kids could lead to a person having poor nutrition or diet in future years, a bank engaging with young people about financial management is not the best place for someone to learn about money. As mentioned in the article on page 12 of the herald sun Nov 29, new teaching resources will be provided by the government to help schools develop their own programs, along with practical information. Let’s hope they do a good job as I know so many people who come to us that wish they had been taught the basics and put them into place earlier in life. This is a great step by the government.
