14.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE BIGGEST FLOOD IN RECENT MEMORY HITS TAREE AND WINGHAM Community members in the Manning River catchment will have to cast their minds back more tha...n 40 years to recall a flood as big as the one currently being experienced in Taree and Wingham. Unprecedented rainfall on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales has resulted in floodwater as high as the fabled 1978 flooding of the Manning River communities, leaving both towns isolated and the volunteers from the New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES) run off their feet. NSW SES Deputy Zone Commander for the Mid North Coast, Inspector Anthony Day, said local volunteers have already responded to a large number of flood rescues, with community members stranded in inundated properties, while others continue to ignore warnings and attempt to drive through flooded roadways. The NSW SES is strongly urging all community members to avoid all non-essential travel during these very dangerous flood conditions, with the potential for more storms and flash flooding to ravage the communities again from tomorrow afternoon, Insp Day said. There have been a number of evacuation orders already distributed to community members in low lying areas of Wingham, Manning Point, Taree Estate and Cundletown, and the NSW SES will continue to monitor these high risk areas in the coming days as more rain is forecast to fall. Insp. Day said the Bureau of Meteorology has indicated widespread falls of 100mm 200mm of rain again on Sunday evening and into Monday, putting further pressure on already saturated catchments. To assist the community members who may be affected by this flooding, evacuation centres have been established at Club Taree, Manning Valley Anglican Church and Wingham Golf Club, Insp. Day added. We have already had 105 people present to Club Taree and a further 91 to Wingham Golf Club since the centres were opened. Insp. Day noted the Manning River peaked at 5.64metre this afternoon, exceeding the 5.4m height of 1978. These are tough times for all in our community, but the NSW SES is there to help, Insp. Day said. If people require the assistance of the NSW SES they can call 132 500. Please be patient as there a high volume of calls currently coming into the call centre. If it is a life-threatening emergency, please call 000. People are reminded that for emergency help during floods and storms, to call the SES on 132 500, in a life-threatening emergency call 000 (triple zero). 03.01.2022 KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE During these unprecedented times, it’s paramount to keep the health and safety of everyone front of mind during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are following the advice from the Australian Government and NSW Health to ensure effective protection for both our customers, staff and wider community and we ask you to practise their advice too. Social distancing means we reduce the number of close physical and social contacts we have with one another. Keeping 1....5m between yourself and others and avoiding crowds and gatherings is all it takes to follow this advice. Practise good hygiene by making sure you clean your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, use hand sanitiser and cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with a tissue or a flexed elbow. Please do your part, stop the spread.
